About the Author
Yoshitaka Amano is a Japanese artist, character designer, illustrator and a theatre and film scenic designer and costume designer. He first came into prominence in the late 1960s working on the anime adaptation of Speed Racer. Amano later became the creator of iconic and influential characters such as Gatchaman, Tekkaman:The Space Knight, Hutch the Honeybee, and Casshan. In 1982 he went independent and became a freelance artist, finding success as an illustrator for numerous authors, and worked on many best selling novels such as The Guin Saga and Vampire Hunter D. He is also known for his commissioned illustrations for the popular video-game franchise Final Fantasy.
Since the 1990s Amano has been creating and exhibiting paintings featuring his iconic retro pop icons in galleries around the world, primarily painting on aluminium box panels with acrylic and automotive paint. He is a 5 time winner of the Seiun Award, and also won the 1999 Bram Stoker Award for his collaboration with Neil Gaiman, Sandman:The Dream Hunters.
Amano's influences include early Western comic books, art nouveau, and Japanese woodblock prints. In early 2010, he established Studio Devaloka, a film production company. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan & New York, N.Y..

I own the other books in this series and I love them all. This one is a little different in that it includes a lot of Amano's pencil work, which was nice to study. I would recommend this to anyone interested in FF or in Art in general. There is some really good reference art in this book.

During sorting she receives a device known as ‘The Band’. It’s a large watch-like device that never comes off, and it measures a citizen’s karma on a scale from one to one hundred. If a citizen does good, they gain points. If a citizen does bad, including breaking laws, they lose points. When your number reaches zero, the band acts as judge, jury, and executioner, and you are injected with toxins that kill you within minutes.

After sorting, recruits are taken to a three month long mandatory school named HQ. It’s at HQ she meets new friends from different zones, and finally begins to feel at ease. Everything goes well until a rare trip home makes her discover that her father, who has been missing for a decade, may have taken part in a terrible program that stands to shake the fabric of society.

I wanted to like it!

I wanted to like this book; I really did. It has a good basis and would have made a great series! However, the characters are underdeveloped and the story is DRAWN out. I don't feel like the right things are highlighted, and way too many things go right for these kids as they break the rules. Again, great idea, it was just poorly executed. I couldn't even finish the 3rd installment; it was too painful.

I really enjoyed this series

I really enjoyed this series. Parts of it seemed pretty unrealistic and parts of it seemed pretty preachy, but overall, I really liked it. There's lots of action and suspenseful moments, and some romance. A fun series. I am an adult and I thought it was great, but it is also suitable for older kids/teens.

Whole set is a good read. I was excited that it wasn't so closely related to the Hunger Games, Divergent or the like as so many newer dystopian novels are. It has a very YA feel, but it kept me interested the entire time, and made me want to read the entire set.

But it is also the story of a strong family and the love that bound them together. And, finally, it's about working to change an oppressive existence by joining the civil rights movement. Tillage, a black custodian in a Baltimore private school, reminisces about his childhood as a sharecropper's son in the South, and his youth as a civil-rights protester. He explains the mechanics of sharecropping and segregation, tells of his mistreatment and his father's murder at the hands of white teenagers out to ``have some fun,'' and relates his experiences with police dogs, fire hoses, and jail while following Martin Luther King's ideas of nonviolent protest. Tillage matter-of-factly recounts horrific events, using spare language that is laced with remarkable wisdom, compassion, and optimism. Such gentleness only gives his story more power, as he drives home the harder realities of his childhood. Simply written, moving, and realistic account of life ...

Simply written, moving, and realistic account of life for an African-American boy in the Jim Crow south. However, the graphic account of violence against Blacks is not appropriate for children. I think it is appropriate for young adults, perhaps starting in Grade 11.

Leon's Tragedy

Leon's story is about a boy who lives in the segregation times. He is about 12 when he is telling this story. It is his story about his life and how he got through it. He is pretending like this segregation thing isn't even happening. One day he was going to this little restaurant to get something to eat, and black people can't enter in the front way because white people don't like it when they enter that way. Black people have to enter through the back and order something to eat. When black people go back there, there is a white person who waits on them. Leon said that if they want to wait on you they will come. There is no bell or anything like that. Leon will just wait to get waited on and he will order something. This book is really awesome and very educational. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read. The best story element for this book would be the suspense. This book is packed with suspense. It got me guessing all the way through. I really enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.

A majestic memoir of a man who knew love and prejudice.

"Leon's Story" is the 1997 winner of the Elementary School Division of the Carter G. Woodson Book Award given by the National Council for the Social Studies for Multicultural Nonfiction taking place in the United States. The discussions between students and adults will be thought provoking. Questions will abound regarding why a nice person faced such horrid discrimination. I would recommend this for a read-aloud in the upper elementary grades so that the teacher can provide background information. Middle school and junior high students will find this book memorable and would make a great book for discussions regarding ethics, morality, history, social change, and civil rights. I would recommend schools obtaining classroom sets.
