Very good book,great photos.

This book was great, but should be used with the book by William Koehler "The Koehler Method Guard Dog Training".The obedience training section of the Koehler book should be mastered first,then the rest of the Koehler book read ,then this book read last .Then if you still want to have a guard dog proceid.This book is a great read , great photos but should not be used as a sole guide for guard work.

I basically agree with the comments made by the reader/reviewer from Las Vegas (dated August 25, 2001). I think this book is well worth reading for the variety of useful information it presents, including insights into suitable breeds. And, while I am not personally knowledgeable about training dogs (and therefore cannot opine about the merits of this book's training techniques), the book does SEEM to make sense and appears to be based on actual experience. It is quite well written, though rather expensive (perhaps the pictures are TOO glossy). Like the Las Vegas reviewer, I think this book should be read in conjunction with at least one other reputable book on the subject. (Too much is at stake--training dogs to bite, etc.--for us to rely on only one book's viewpoint.) The other book I therefore recommend is "Protection Dogs for You and Your Family," by Weiss and Rose, et al. If you read that book along with Harlowe's "K-9 Bodyguards," you should get good cross-illumination on this important subject.

great book

This book was a great help with protection training my pitbull. If you start out with a dog with a solid temperament and follow the principles of this book, you can have a good protection dog and a great family pet. The Harlowe method of teaching the out is the kindest to the dog, uses no force,and is very reliable. My dog outed cleanly the first time on a decoy, and never failed to out cleanly. The Harlowe method for teaching the running recall is also very simple and effective. This is the best book I have read on training a FAMILY protection dog, and it is very unlikely that you will need to use any harsh methods if you start early with your puppy. The only other thing I would like to add is that you probably need to work with an experienced decoy and trainer if you are new to protection training, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. It is also takes a lot of time and effort to train a protection dog, you can't do it half way.

An Unexpected Gem. Fans of JK Rowling's Life-story Should Read This.

This is an important work...but not just for the reasons you'd think.

In her wincingly candid account of her own post-divorce self-deconstruction and rebuilding process, Miss Vivian uncovers a horrorshow of some basic truths about everything from a chasm of gender inequality to the horridly inadequate social safety-net in place for single moms. Reading this book makes it all too clear to see the complex and multifaceted problems that face women with children who are trapped in bad marriages, in a state of poverty, in a social-structure whose parameters don't allow or afford them the opportunity to escape mentally, physically or emotionally unscathed no matter how hard they work at it. No matter how disciplined they are at doing what's right. Not without outside help. Not without miracles-worth of outside help.

There exists, thankfully, a movement of socially-conscious people who vote and care about social responsibility, of widening the safety-net, of dispelling the tropes and myths of "the welfare queen" but I wonder how many of them really have an intimate picture of that struggle in their minds--not just from the perspective of a few anecdotes about hardworking people who simply fell on hard times and need help getting back to their feet--but of the reality that there exists a population of bright, prodigal women who have so much to contribute, condemned to be stuck in the mire because they never had that footing in the first place...or because every path along their route is littered with walls and obstacles.

Not since Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel And Dimed" (a work I highly recommend as a companion to this, by the way) has a work of nonfiction made the trap of American poverty so abundantly clear...but it's more than just that. It's more than just the numbers or the scarcity. The statistics, the day-to-day realities. These are also Miss Vivian's feelings. This book depicts the inner struggle--often self-contradictory, even--of a mother, a thinker, a lover and home-cooked philanthropist. A lady, like each and every one of us, with aspirations to change the future for herself, her children and the community...for the better of us all.

Never preachy, this was a page-turner. I read the book in a weekend and found myself rooting for her; sometimes angry, sometimes in tears. At times, on the edge of my seat, hoping that each effort, each battle would net her the Big Break that makes the whole war worthwhile and cracks open the world like an oyster for her own indulgence.

I hope this writer reads her reviews because I'd like her to know that in me, she's got a fan. I await her next work with adoring anticipation.

This is not a self-help, feel-good, cliche dripped book about how awesome life really is. This is a book about a real woman facing real life and that isn't always kind and it can't always be fixed with chocolate and cocktails. Jessica Vivian holds nothing back, and opens herself wide for the world to see and take away from it what they will; whatever inspiration, whatever spark of truth. The pages of this story hold more than the words on them.

Encourage Children, Students and Selves to be the very best

Ordinary Children, Extraordinary Teachers has inspired me to be a better parent and teacher to my two children. Marva first let the children know that she cared about them and that she would not let them fail even when the other schools have washed their hands of the child. It was as if I were a student in Marva's class. I was so encourage to first, complete the book, I could not put it down, as I read I would practice the techniques on my children, for example my six grade son was still struggling with his multiplcations facts, he had a test to complete 100 problems in 4 min. I call my son a scholar and had him practice over and over the same test. each practice test he got better and better, he passed the test and felt really proud.he is bringing his C's to B's and his B's to A's. I learned you have to meet the child where he is. Thank you Marva for your care, concern, inspiration and motivation. and keep teaching and writing.

It has made being mindful and able to manifest anything exceptionally easy & a second nature to me

(and it still comes with me even after completion- I often lend it out to friends and family) With references and research that'll have you learning new information and seeking out new experiences with every chapter, it is a book you won't soon forget, especially after you start finding synchronicities within your life and the words you've just read. This book leaves you with a whole new perspective on the outside world, and most importantly within yourself. The Elements is a genuine inspiration and I can't recommend it highly enough. Although I was already familiar with some of the “self-help” concepts presented in the book, the way Ricky lays out his understanding of complex esoteric teachings is truly unique. Coming from the school of hard knocks, Ricky has the life experience to know how one, in a practical way, can begin to improve their quality of life.
