Lucid, practical introduction to dynamical systems

This book, aimed at upper undergraduate/elementary graduate level students of dynamical systems, is an excellent introduction to the basics of analysis of dynamical systems. Starting with simple one-dimensional examples, the text develops the basic mathematical tools for finding canonical variables, adiabatic invariants, and other characteristics of systems of ordinary differential equations associated with dynamics. Exercises interspersed with the text clarify the application of the mathematical techniques. Highly recommended for introductory courses in this topic.

Great collection

Good Housekeeping's "Party Pie Book" is one of a series of recipe books that Good Housekeeping Magazine put out in the late 1950's. (Others that I own include the book of cookies and the cake recipes book.) All these cookbooks are of high quality and contain tested recipes. The pie book is no exception. A quick estimate based on the index in the back of the book is that there are at least 150 different pie recipes (including variations on some of the recipes).

In addition to tips on making "perfect pies" at the beginning of the book, the "Party Pie Book" has a section with various pie-shell recipes. This section includes tips on making a shapely pie shell as well as a two-crust pie. As anyone who has made pies knows, getting the shell right is half the challenge of making an appealing pie.

The recipes are grouped by category. The categories include fruit and deep-dish pies, cream pies, chiffon pies, custard, cheese, and nut pies, pies to freeze, tarts and turnovers, and deluxe pie-desserts (including Baked-Alaska Pie). Just about every type of pie imaginable is included in this cookbook. This is as good as it gets when it comes to a recipe book devoted exclusively to pies.

James E. Maddux, PhD, is University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He is the former editor of the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology and former director of the clinical doctoral program at George Mason University.

Barbara A. Winstead, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Psychology Department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She is also the former director of clinical training for the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology.

Good update of the previous edition

Has more recent content than the 2008 second edition. There are some sections that could use more updates. For example, the chapter on substance use disorders cites use statistics from the 90s. Additionally, with the upcoming release of the DSM-5 in May of this year, it is likely that there will be a new edition written relatively soon to accommodate the changes. I would wait or buy a used version if you need it before the next edition comes out.

Some chapters are super biased, criticising DSM without concrete evidence instead of providing a balanced view of pros and cons. Biased writing ends up being too unscientific.

Finally! A Readable Textbook.

In Academia associated with counseling the grounds of the hallowed educational institutions are littered with crushingly dull, data-filled tomes that are read only because the reading is required. Editors Maddux and Winstead have published a remarkable exception. Drawing on authors and experts from all over, the editors have assembled a coherent, readable, informative, and engaging book.

I know that it is usual for many students to sell their books once a course is completed. This one is a keeper that I can foresee as a frequent reference.

One note: This book was published in anticipation of the release of the DSM-5. Now that the release has happened, I hope Maddux and Winstead team up to update this to the 4th edition.
