Good supplement

I read Sit N' Go Strategy at the beginning of the year and found it to be mathematically sound. The tone of Secrets of Sit n' Go was a little easier to read and had a lot to do with psychology. I wouldn't recommend reading Secrets without reading Strategy as well because the two compliment each other very well.

A couple of disappointments: lots of typos as the first review said which is kind of annoying because the typos would actually MAKE a difference and contradict the author's point. Second is that the reader is only getting about 130 pages of reading material the other 90 or so pages are quizzes. The quizzes part is pretty normal it's just easier to count the amount of material because the quizzes have their own section opposed to being integrated into each chapter.

Review of Secrets

This book can be great for learning strategy for sit'n'go's...however you wonder just how much to trust in the writings of the Author because this book is PACKED full of typo's and on at least one page there was conflicting information(page 204). Phil Shaw is suppose to be a writer and journalist.....this books writing reflects badly on his credibility as either of those and therefore makes me slighty cautious about his "poker advice" as well. However, if you can wade through the many errors, it offers some great information for playing all levels of sit'n'go's that you may chose to investigate further through other readings or practice.

Long Live the Sit'n'go!

As a small stakes sit'n'go player who is successfully building a bankroll from a $60.00 deposit (increased 500% to $360.00 in 6 weeks and fewer than 500 sit'n'gos), I was glad to discover this excellent contribution to sit'n'go poker literature. If you are looking to build a bankroll through sit'n'go play then this book is a must read. Some of my favorite topics this book touches on are:

Reasons for playing sit'n'gos as opposed to MTT's and cash games

Maximum realistic ROI's for small, medium, and high stakes sit'n'go play

How to turn a $200.00 bankroll into $100,000.00 in a year using sit'n'gos and good bankroll management

ROI differences between turbo and standard sit'n'gos

What stack sizes are good and not so good for defending blinds

How to play various crucial bubble situations

Ranges for all in pushes and calls based on stack sizes, distance from making the money, and opponent playing styles

Many valuable hand examples with recommendations

One thing I noticed was that the author seems to have an attitude that favors making the money first and then afterward gambling in many situations but other authors I have read are very comfortable with risking elimination on the bubble to double up and have a greater shot at the first place lion's share of the money. I would much rather be a 40% ITM player if it meant more 1st place finishes than a 50% ITM player with only a rare 1st place finish.

Also, the ICM recommendations will probably work better for tougher competition but at the small stakes I play in with many loose callers, the results can be disastrous since all of the donkeys just don't give you much fold equity. I still find some situations in which the ICM recommendations are useful but I find that in my small stakes games when I am a short stack that shoving on a hand that rates to be the best preflop hand (as opposed to 9 10 s or k 8 ) gets plenty of loose calls and doubles me up quite often. The bottom line is that I don't have to steal too many blinds to build my stack but just shove on good hands and I get plenty of double ups. After almost 500 sit'n'gos my ROI is near 15% so obviously my fairly straightforward play with a slightly reduced all in pushing and calling range when small stacked is working well at these stakes.

To the author's credit, he is a successful sit'n'go player at all stakes and anyone who takes his/her sit'n'go game seriously will benefit from this book. I know I will be rereading it several times throughout my sit'n'go career.

Azar Gat is Ezer Weitzman Professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at Tel Aviv University. His more recent publications include A History of Military Thought: From the Enlightenment to the Cold War (2001), War in Human Civilization (2006), named one of the best books of the year by The Times Literary Supplement, and Victorious and Vulnerable: Why Democracy Won in the 20th Century and How it is Still Imperilled (2010).

Excellent Book!

As a survey of military thought from the Enlightenment up to the Cold War, I found Professor Gat's book to be comprehensive, thought-provoking, well researched, and well written. In particular the effect of established opinions on the nature of war and how it should be waged, and the reaction of succeeding generations to these established opinions is very interesting. Specifically, the military theories developed during the Enlightenment and the reaction of military theorists to the victories of Napoleon (such as Clausewitz) were of special interest. As Professor Gat himself remarks, there is a tendency to treat the period before Clausewitz as a kind of intellectual void, during which there was no discussion of the theory and practice of war at all. In fact there was a great deal of controversy on military matters taking place in both France and Germany. Admittedly this is a specialist book, not for everyone. But for anyone interested in this topic, I highly recommend this book.

Disappointing survey of military thought

This is the one-volume collection of Azar Gat's trilogy on military thought. He explores thinking about war and strategy ranging from Machiavelli to the 1950s, relating the ideas to their cultural and historical contexts.
As he writes, "New ideas emerge during periods of revolutionary change or at times of crisis, in response to great historical challenges." The great strategic thinkers Jomini and Clausewitz developed their revolutionary ideas in response to the French Revolution.
Gat argues that World War One's massive slaughter forced a paradigm shift from Clausewitz's ideas to the new idea of limited war. But Julian Corbett, limited war's greatest theorist, first published his ideas before 1914. Corbett argued, like Clausewitz, that wars were means to an end, continuations of policy. But he showed that wars could take many forms, with differing limits, depending on their political aims.
Gat exaggerates the importance of J. F. C. Fuller in the interwar period. Fuller plagiarised Ernest Swinton, who first proposed using tanks offensively in numbers to achieve breakthrough. Fuller fantasised that tanks alone could win wars, without infantry and combined arms.
Gat also over praises Basil Liddell Hart, who idealised limited war, just part of Britain's military experiences. In the 1930s, Hart predicted that wars would become more humane and rational: World War Two was the most destructive war in history.
In this war, the greatest test of Britain's survival as an independent and sovereign nation, Fuller and Hart encouraged Hitler to attack the Soviet Union. Hart opposed the Allies' policy of total war against Hitler, and called for Britain to collaborate with Hitler. Hart claimed that victory was unattainable and that fighting Hitler would `only lead to mutual suicide, and the collapse of civilisation'.
Gat asserts that Hart pioneered a `Western way' of warfare, of limited war, containment and economic coercion, based on the reactionary dreams of European and World Federation. But there is no such `Western way': Western ruling classes waged all sorts of wars against national liberation struggles, annihilatory against Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, relatively limited against Malaya and Kenya.

Great book.

I had not considered Vertical Gastric Sleeve surgery when I went for my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon. I had assumed that I would have a RNY but after some discussion with her I agreed to do some more research on the subject. Well, little did I know that there just isn't a lot of info out there on this procedure. I have purchased another book that still had this procedure labeled as "experimental". I was glad to have come across this book as it answered a lot of questions for me. The author is not a clinition but an actual "Sleeve" patient. She gives good backround info that is backed up by her personal experience. If you are considering a Vertical Gastric Sleeve procedure than this is a good place to start.

The Sleeve is the best.

I had my sleeve surgery 12 days ago. Everything went good as long you follow your doctors and go to all the glasses. I went to classes from July 15th till my surgery in November. You learn so much and they give you a binder for everything. I have a girlfriend that we went together to the peer to peer classes, cooking classes, information class on how people will take you lossing weight even your best friends. After 12 days after surgery I was 274 and I now weigh 240. I waited for 13 years to get it due to congressed heart failure from a bad cold but now its done. I am 73 and feel great thanks to my Lord.

great book full of information

I wish I'd found this book at the beginning of my weight loss journey. I started reading it one year after surgery. I felt like I was reading my own story, so much great information, and right on track of what is gonna happen before during and after weight loss surgery. I recommend this book to all those seeking weight loss surgery.

About the Author
For more than twenty-five years, Glenn G. Thater has written works of fiction and historical fiction that focus on the genres of epic fantasy and sword and sorcery. His published works of fiction include the first ten volumes of the Harbinger of Doom saga: Gateway to Nifleheim; The Fallen Angle; Knight Eternal; Dwellers of the Deep; Blood, Fire, and Thorn; Gods of the Sword; The Shambling Dead; Master of the Dead; Shadow of Doom; Wizard’s Toll; the novella, The Gateway; and the novelette, The Hero and the Fiend. Mr. Thater holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with concentrations in Astronomy and Religious Studies, and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Structural Engineering. He has undertaken advanced graduate study in Classical Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, and Astrophysics, and is a practicing licensed professional engineer specializing in the multidisciplinary alteration and remediation of buildings, and the forensic investigation of building failures and other disasters. Mr. Thater has investigated failures and collapses of numerous structures around the United States and internationally. Since 1998, he has served on the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Forensic Engineering Divison (FED), is a Past Chairman of that Division’s Executive Committee and FED’s Committee on Practices to Reduce Failures. His ruthless simplifications of geology, evolution, and neurology pay off because, as Bak notes, his models describe behavior that is common across these domains. This universality means that trampling across others' turf is not only acceptable, but almost mandatory, if the underlying principles are to be exposed. Finally, for the most part, Bak wants the reader to grasp the basic logic of his arguments; only rarely does he try to persuade with flights of poetic language or brute intellectual authority.

Simply in a Class by Itself

I couldn't let the previous reviewer's comments stand without comment. I can't believe the reviewer read the same book that I did. Bak's treatment is detailed, clear, and balanced. When he is enthusiastic he let's you know exactly why, leaving you free to make up your own mind. The fact that most of the studies he describes were published in Physical Review Letters might tell you something about their quality. The book provides wonderful examples of the role of models in science, much better than any I've come across in rather extensive search for materials for a course on the Nature of Science I help teach. I'm reading the book for the third time (not because it is difficult to read, but simply because it repays rereading) and I admire it more with each reading. If you want to understand models that display Self Organized Criticality, this book is without question the place to go.

Great book but...

This is both a wonderful book and an awful one with two interleaved narratives. I've read the book cover to cover and some of the key chapters several times over. I've also replicated some of the key simulation results on a personal computer. Much to the credit of Per Bak's clear explanations designed to simplify he eminently succeeds at his task of making his point: complexity in nature can be simple to understand. Bak points out the existence of power laws in self-organized critical systems occurring in nature and he gives the reader the ability to model them using simple numerical methods. We could call them "back of the envelope calculations" if the were analytic. All of this he manages to do without the need for the reader ever to go to the published literature. In the process of doing that, he does not completely strip off the plausibility of the models. In some sense it is quite a tour de force.
So what could be awful about such a wonderful book? It would be a great world if those who make significant advances in science were magnanimous. While one narrative in Per Bak's book is all about self-organized criticality, the "other" narrative comes out all but too self-serving. Per Bak relishes in his moment in the limelight of science as he uses every bit of it as a platform to offer judgmental and patronizing opinions about every other field of science (including his own physics) and many colleagues he's worked with or benefited from the insight of... When convenient, reductionism is good but when not convenient, reductionism is vile. Big Science is mindless, except perhaps for this or perhaps for that... A lot of this "other narrative" really sounds like small talk around the departmental coffee pot with a few smirks and some wry smiles. Perhaps the editor might have suggested it all stayed there. If all this was really meant to be tongue in cheek or said with a kind smile, consider rewriting the prose.
The "real reality" about science is that it benefits from advances on all fronts, both the microscopic and the macroscopic. Both the linear and the non-linear. It is men and women who do science, not machines, and unfortunately they sometimes bring in hubris with an inch gained here or there. Go ahead and buy the book (it's reasonably priced...), enjoy the first narrative and try to disregard the second, if you can.

Applied Self Organized Critically

Per Bak's book How Nature Works is about the theory of self organizing criticality and its applicability to a variety of questions and problems in several sciences. It is an interesting and quick read for the most part. I have read other books on self organized criticality that were far less understandable and more limited in their scope of applicability.
Although there were portions of Bak's work that were a little belabored-I found my interest in sand piles began to sag after the initial discussion, for instance-much of the rest of the book was enlightening. The discussion in Chapter 1 of the contrast between the clarity and simplicity of the laws of physics and the complexity and unpredictability of nature was particularly interesting as was the discussion of the difference between chaos and complexity. His explanation in Chapter 2 of the theory of self organized criticality and the history of its development is far clearer than I found Stuart Kauffman's to be. It might make a better starting place for anyone wishing to understand the theory a little better before going on to Kauffman's and other books on the subject.
Essentially the theme of the book involves the self organization of much of the universe, from stars and volcanoes to traffic jams and economics, into critical states sustained as stable systems until they evolve through cascade events or what Bak calls avalanches (after his sand pile paradigm) or catastrophes. Bak explains that the system maintains itself along a critical line, above which chaos rules and nothing can be predicted and below which nothing happens so there is nothing to predict!
Chapter 5 which deals with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions interested me in particular because of my own study of geology. Here Bak suggests that geophysicists' attempts at prediction of events is a lost cause. He believes it to be based upon the mistaken human habit of looking at random events for patterns and periodicity where none exists. While the history of a given event can be studied in some detail after the fact, the information derived is useless in predicting the future. In Bak's opinion, the variables involved are so legion and are interrelated in so convoluted a way as to be impossible to monitor before the fact.
In chapters 7, 8, and 9 the author attempts to model Darwin's gradual evolution, Gould's punctuated equilibrium, and the Santa Fe Institute's fitness landscape to see which fits the facts better. In general Darwin's theories are vindicated---no real surprise there---while punctuated equilibrium is also found to have it's place in a complete theory of evolution. Chapter 11 contained a section on the unavoidability of catastrophes and fluctuations---and by their extension, one supposes, biological evolution-which casts light on the boom and bust character of economics among other things. This chapter extends the use of the theory of SOC to human activities as well as to human evolution.
The author's style is very chatty, which makes it readable and personable. By filling in the human details of the discoverers, he makes the book more personal. In all, though I found myself occasionally losing the thread of the author's theme, I nevertheless found the content of each chapter well worth.

CJ Bishop did it again. She brings the boys of Phoenix to life. I love all the boys. I do have my favorites but with the Chronicles you get them all. I can not wait for the next book to see what happens to them all. I hope that we see them all get their happy ending. Please hurry and write the next one. Thank you for writing a great series.

I love the idea of Max and Horatio adopting Maddy!!

It is not full of silly systems and gimmicks like others, instead

A little background about me. I started my LSAT journey with a diagnostic score of 155. I studied for about 4 months took the LSAT in December 2015 and scored a 167. I decided to retake after seeing how much my score in reading comprehension had held me back. I was desperate for a solution; I was making weird mistakes and had trouble isolating what exactly was going wrong. So I decided to read through this book.

In February 2016, I scored a 176. I truly think this little book pushed me over that edge from the high 160s to the 170s. It is not full of silly systems and gimmicks like others, instead, it provided clear tips that really helped me.

Short, but helpful read!

I've been an LSAT tutor for many years and much of what I pass on to my students is usually some select combination of the test prep material from different companies I've read, what I've heard works from my students, and any strategies I've personally applied and found to be useful.

This book forces you to take a step back and turns conventional wisdom on its head. As with most projects we tackle, we tend to try to bend the task at hand to our will - in the LSAT we usually do this by diagramming, annotating, and summarizing passages to process LSAT information into one single universal format we're comfortable with manipulating from practice. While this method provides you with tangible markers of progress, we often forget that there's only so much we can improve on from forcing the LSAT to conform with the way we think. We must instead meet the test halfway and change the way we approach the test.

This book does a good job of just that, and differs from most prep test books by serving as a reminder the way you think is just as responsible for your grade as the few seconds or minutes you can save by streamlining procedural quirks of the LSAT. This may seem like common sense, but after all, common sense is not so common.

Saw an almost instant improvement

I have read other lsat prep books but I just wasnt getting it since they are mostly taught by naturally gifted people. This book is different in that it teaches a real technique for people who really struggle with reading the dense and complex materials. It is like he teaches you how to filter out the crap or babble and identify the keys to focusing on the right info choosing the correct answers.
