About the Author
Irwin Miller is professor of health administration at Governors State University. He was director of one of America's first HMO projects, and did the policy planning for Blue Cross's nationwide HMO marketing network. He is also the author of The Health Care Survival Curve, which is also about HMOs.

Unpleasant experience

This book is really unpleasant. I used it for an introductory mathematical statistics class. Perhaps I am used to the prose style of mathematics, but this is really difficult to follow and in general not helpful. Definitions are sparse and examples aren't too enlightening. Most exercises are routine and a few are ill-formed or poorly stated. Most offensive was the price. It's a real crime what big publishers do nowadays. I can get 10 times the content in 1/10th the pages from a dover publication. Save the glossy printing and unneeded color for others, I can do without it. Stay away if possible, or borrow from a friend or the library.

This has to be one of the worst textbooks I've had to use in my college experience. I'm an applied math major and have had my share of abstract math that is difficult to read, but that is not the problem with this book. The main problems are:
1: Numerous typos which will leave you scratching your head when you read an example (if he even provides one, see point 2) because it will appear he did some calc or algebra magic to get what he was after, then your stats instructor will just say "no, this book just has a lot of mistakes" which will lead to a complete rage out because, after all, IT IS THE 8th EDITION FOR CRIPES SACK. Fix your book John, or maybe proof read it at least.
2: The examples he gives are laughably trivial, and what is even more annoying, the writer was often to lazy to even come up with a problem which you can follow on one page. Instead he constantly, and I mean that in the most literal way, refers back to problems 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 chapters back. It is just terrible pedagogically because you are constantly having to break your concentration to go hunt this example down, then flip back and forth to see how he is doing something with the info from that page forever ago. Very poor effort on his part to try and teach this exciting topic.
3: His definitions and explanations are okay but often unfathomable. The main purpose of lecture seems to be for my professor to restate Johnny's mess in ways a human can understand and execute properly.
4: He never really provides any motivation for the definitions, which is incredibly frustrating as a math person. He just states the definition, but will often not bother to explain why this is the definition and how it came to be, and there is a lot of historical significance to most these definitions.
5: Lastly, I'm just outraged that this book is filled with mistakes, poor teaching methods, and is borderline unreadable; yet it is in its 8th edition and will cost you a significant amount of money. What am I paying for with this new edition? I also have the 7th and the books are identical (This even includes, and I'm not kidding, typos! Yes, that's right, the new edition still has the typos and errors from the 7th from what I've seen so far). What the new edition has the old didn't you may ask: it is reformatted so the pages are larger (which is useless since you have to constantly flip back to other pages anyway) and the problems have been rearranged, though they remain exactly the same.
Long story short: typos, terrible writing, and an absolute void of fluid reading make this book pure garbage. Stay away and if you must use it buy another stats book to help you get through because this book won't do it alone unless you go to a lot of office hours. See reviews of the 7th for good recommendations of books to actually learn stats.
