Classic and unique, a needed resource even today

I am a therapist and have a fair amount of experience with OCD, and have read quite a bit on the subject. However, this book is qualitatively different from other books on OCD. In my opinion, it would be extremely helpful both for therapists, for people who are dealing with OCD themselves, or people who are dealing with a friend, acquaintance, or family member who has OCD.
The book describes, not just typical OCD behaviors such as handwashing, etc., but, more importantly, it presents the world-view and verbal and interpersonal patterns of people who have obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. The insight and depth of the book are, quite simply, astounding, and seem unique in the literature on the subject. This book gave me a depth of understanding unmatched by any other book I have encountered on the subject, and is as relevant today as it was when it was written. A classic--perhaps THE classic--in its field.

A timeless book that will be remembered for centuries

I will continue to recommend this work as a great book. I think its insights are timeless and are important for many people, whether or not they fall under the OCD or OCPD spectrum. Especially with the advent of the perfection that the computer presents us, people may feel that they need to measure up more and more to a rigid and merciless perfectionism.
If understood what is in this book, they wouldn't need many of the self help books they buy today -- they would simply understand what it is to be human, and accept themselves and others in the process.

The best pre-medication study of OCD

I must admit, I'm prejudiced. Dr. Salzman is my father,
Be that as it may, this is an incredible book -- incredibly readable and accurate. Through case studies of his own patients, Dr. Salzman opens up a world of understanding of those with Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD), and shows that, even before there was medication, there was hope.
Dr. Salzman is a founder of the Washington School of Psychiatry, a past president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, chairman of the dept. of Psychiatry at Tulane Medical School, former director of Bronx State Hospital, a student of Harry Stack Sullivan, and an all-around decent fellow who certainly raised his own kids right!
