The drudgery of housework, even on the little riverboat, and the work of raising a family are convincingly portrayed as the necessities of a conventional life, which Delie desperately tries to escape. These are contrasted with Delie's passion for painting, which is made palpable by Hosking's energetic voice as she describes the panoramic countryside and winding rivers of Australia.
