It's a quote that exemplifies this intriguing narrative blend of philosophy and crime fiction. While the author doesn't expand the vampire mythos in any significant way, he creates a story that succeeds on numerous levels—one that is simultaneously thought-provoking and relentlessly entertaining.

The shake is a vampire / detective novel. It's fun, almost whimsical, yet at the same time grim and somewhat horrifying.

The plot follows Shake - a vampire whose curiosity turns him into a detective. The plot is tightly woven and the story moves along at a steady pace. Shake is a somewhat philosophical vampire, who strives to understand why he does what he does.

The character of Shake is well thought out. Vampires in other novels are often simply humans with a thirst for blood and insomnia. Shake is definitely not human, yet his attempts to rationalize his decisions definitely are.

Shake's side-kick Karla juxtaposes the nonhuman side of Shake and allows us to see the vampire world from human eyes. The novel is full of memorable characters such as the very deadly and very dangerous, Mio - the only vampire with whom Shake spends time.

You can't go wrong with The Shake - It is gripping from beginning to end.

Not Your Average Vampire

Shake is an intellectual’s vampire, intelligent, cooly analytical, but in no way pedantic. The thread that runs through the book is his constant questioning of why he chooses one person to feed from rather than another. His distanced, essentially amoral stance in regard to human is sometimes blindsided by a decision to let a person live even though they’re a desirable source of nutrition. “Danny may not have deserved any better, but it didn’t change the fact that, beyond the physical satisfaction of my thirst, my motivations were unclear to me. The truth was, I wanted there to be meaningful distinctions, points of reference. I wanted it to be possible to make a better or worse choice, so that I could make the better choice. But I didn’t know how to make the distinctions.”

Shake is a philosopher, not heavy-handed, but certainly with a point of view that most humans would regard as cold-blooded. A great read for anyone who’s tired of vampire cliches. The book has too man typos for something that’s otherwise extremely well-done, but I can’t downgrade it for that.

This is the book for all those PI and vampire genre lovers because Shake has a knack for the intelligent investigation as well as having the distinction of being a vampire, putting a little more twist to his strongarm tactics. He, of course, has a history, a blood thirst, and may even have a penchant for right and wrong in a more or less normal human way, though it's a dilemna even he can't get straight.
This book is well written and certainly passed my main requirement of a good book when I don't like to put it down for something else, like going to work. Fortunately, it's an easy read as Shake develops his own sense of justice and motivation in solving a mystery based on the word "bloodsucker" he sees at the house of one of his unfortunate meals. At first, I was a little dismayed at the conclusion, but, alas, it was because I am human. Once I thought about it, I considered it from Shake's point of view, though I could only guess what that may be, and was satisfied all is well in vampire land.

military strategy before the War for Independence (first)

I am doing personal research on military strategic thought at the time of the American Revolution / War for America. Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, was one of the most popular & prolithic military strategists at that time. However, since you don't want your enemies to know your moves & countermoves, you should seek to keep those strategies secret. One of Frederick's generals was captured carrying a copy of this limited printing & distribution text (51 copies). The Austrians translated and printed it in 1761 and the English in 1762. So it provides the only insight into Frederick's mindset for that time. His numerous other works were allegedly published posthumously after 1787.
This short book focuses on military thought by generals. It mostly covers operational considerations and battle strategy. It does discuss "projects of campaign" which was the operative term for "strategy" before the 19th century. It has encouraged me to rethink the most common criticisms of military strategy on both sides during the Am. Revolution. So I personally found this seminal work worth reading. And I plan to reread it for further clarification on military thought during the late 18th century.

Good insights into military strategy

For those people who are interested in history and who enjoy reading first-hand accounts, this is fascinating reading.

You can see from the clearly set-out instructions to Frederick's generals as to why he is described as "Great".

I also found it interesting that this edition was first published in 1944 - about the time the US Army was looking at the invasion of occupied Europe. It was obviously printed to give Allied military commanders a background into German military thinking and strategy.

Interesting, but nothing you haven't seen before

While a useful translation of Frederick's Instructions, I'm sad to say that there is really nothing in this book that hasn't already been published many times over in other works about him and his army. Since it has instructions for his Generals from a particular time and relating to a specific campaign or plan, it is also not exactly helpful for someone trying to get an insight into 18th century warfare. I much more strongly recommend Frederick The Great On The Art Of War by Jay Luvaas.

Cycles, Sequels, Spin-offs, Remakes, and Reboots takes the opposite view, surveying a wide range of international media multiplicities for the first time to elucidate their importance for audiences, industrial practices, and popular culture.

The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films. They show how considering the particular bonds that tie texts to one another allows us to understand more about the audiences for these texts and why they crave a version of the same story (or character or subject) over and over again. These findings demonstrate that, far from being lowbrow art, multiplicities are actually doing important cultural work that is very worthy of serious study.
