Surreal...an origami book with no pictures or diagrams. Not even a picture of what you are supposedly folding. Nothing but narrative. This is the most pathetic and useless origami book ever published. It is totally worthless. I would not even rate it 1 star but can't go lower than 1 star. Don't waste your time even sampling the book.

Very clear instructions.

The instructions in this book are among those that most impress my friends when I make them. There are explanation of the level of verbal instruction; however some of the sets of folds are very complex and the verbal instructions provide that much needed extra to understand what is going on. This is a very cool book with lots of cool instructions! Sometimes the diagrams in many books can get a little confusing, but you'll get the hang of it. Most people will be able to find something to make, but I would only suggest this book for a non-beginner. If you are willing to look past these objections, the finished models themselves are frequently amazing. This origami book had so many different options and levels for origami! I would definitely suggest buying origami paper to go with it though.

I entered my pediatric rotation scared. My attending is a PIMPing machine so I swallowed and took the hits till I found this book. All you have to do read and memorize the section you are rotating in and you will see the same exact cases in your pediatric rotation. So lets say you are Pediatric Emergency Medicine for your rotation, all you have to do is memorize that part of the soap note peds book and you will fill confident enough on your write ups and PIMPing sections with the attending.

Steve J. Stern is professor of history and director of Latin American and Iberian Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.  His books include Resistance, Rebellion, and Consciousness in the Andean Peasant World, 18th to 20th Centuries and Confronting Historical Paradigms: Peasants, Labor, and the Capitalist World System in Africa and Latin America, both of which are published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Andean Indians - Cultural Adaptation to Spanish Colonialism

I was captivated by Mario Vargas Llosa's disturbing novel, Death in the Andes. It is structurally a mystery story, but it can be best characterized as a compelling portrait of political violence in contemporary Peru. Mario Vargas Llosa is a captivating story teller and I found myself wanting to know more about the people that inhabit the harsh mountains of Peru.

"Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640" by Steve J. Stern exactly met my needs. This scholarly text tells the story of how conquest transformed a resilient and vigorous people into an inferior caste of Andean Indians. The geographical focus is a mountainous region in southwest Peru dominated by the city Huamanga (today known as Ayacucho, a city not too distant from the fictional town of Naccos, the setting for Death in the Andes).

The lengthy title, "Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640", may be a little intimidating, but the book is well-written and is largely accessible without undue effort. The first chapter paints an intriguing view of a pre-Columbian society based on complex reciprocity relationships between members of extended families or kinships called ayllus. These arrangements allowed dispersed groups to exploit isolated, island-like, ecological niches like cold high mountain pastures or low dry valleys while depending upon others for products grown or created elsewhere.

The ethnic groups native to Huamanga welcomed the overthrow of the Incas and allied themselves quickly with the victorious Spaniards. "Local communities sacked warehouses once dedicated to the discredited Incas." Chapter 2 examines the rise and subsequent demise of these post-Incaic alliances with the Spanish.

Chapter 3, "A Historical Watershed", describes the revival of Andean religious fervor (the Taki Onqoy) and an unsuccessful effort to expel the Spanish colonizers. Remarkably, the Spanish, under the formidable leadership of Don Francisco de Toledo, within a decade had dramatically revised their colonial structure, and largely eliminated any possibility of future revolt by the Andean Indians.

Chapter 4 details the political economy of colonialism in the Huamanga region while chapter 5 investigates the contentious legal battles between the Indians and the colonizing elite under the Spanish judicial system. Both chapters are intriguing, but are more difficult for the non-specialist. I was surprised by how carefully the Spanish structured the taxation system; it siphoned away the maximum wealth without completely devastating the Andean economy. The Indians resisted this economic oppression through evasion as well as by tenaciously exploiting the Spanish legal system to protect their rights.

The final three chapters explore the ways in which the Andean Indians gradually adapted to Spanish colonization and how this adaptation fostered a political economy of dependence. Stern devotes chapter 7 to the "tragedy of success", the story of the successful few that escaped the burdens of the peasantry by becoming integrated into the ruling Spanish colonial structure. The final chapter, Huamanga's colonial heritage, admits that much has changed in modern times, but argues that "the present seems to superimpose itself upon the past, not destroy it."

I was not really a fan of this book. On the surface, it discusses Spanish colonialism in Peru but seems more interested in Marxist propaganda and criticism of class structure than Latin American History. Still, there is a place for such theses in history and Stern does a good job of supporting his argument.

It followed the shore of Lake Erie, connecting Cleveland and Toledo with a high-speed, limited-stop service and pioneered a form of intermodal transportation three decades before the rest of the industry. To millions of people the bright orange electric cars were an economical and comfortable means of escaping the urban mills and shops or the humdrum of rural life. In summers during the glory years there were never enough cars to handle the crowds. After reaching its peak in the early 1920s, however, the Lake Shore Electric suffered the fate of most of its sister lines: it was now competing with automobiles, trucks, and buses and could not rival them in convenience. The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story tells the story of this fascinating chapter in interurban transportation, including the missed opportunities that might have saved this railway.

Herbert H. Harwood, Jr., has carried on concurrent careers as a railroad historian, writer, photographer, and working railroader. He is author of The Railroad That Never Was: Vanderbilt, Morgan, and the South Pennsylvania Railroad (IUP, 2010), The New York, Westchester & Boston Railway: J. P. Morgan's Magnificent Mistake (IUP, 2008), and Invisible Giants: The Empires of Cleveland's Van Sweringen Brothers (IUP, 2003).

Robert S. Korach was elected in 1995 to the American Public Transit Association Hall of Fame. He is past president of the Association of Railway Museums.

This book is too good not to have at least one review. While I have no overwhelming interest in Midwestern interurbans, the combination of Amazon's price, admiration for author Harwood's other work, and the quality of Indiana University Press' Railroads Past and Present series of books made a purchase irresistible.

It took longer to write The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story than the 37 years the company existed. Authors Harwood and Korach completed the writing of a project begun by John Rehor and Willis McCaleb. Perhaps the Lake Shore was fortunate in running between populous Cleveland and Toledo, but the photographic record of the line is simply amazing #although coverage of the extreme western end of the line near Toledo has been slighted#. There is enough detailed coverage of the nuts and bolts to satisfy the hard core rail buff: main line operations, local service in cities and towns, equipment, freight, and wrecks #typical of interurbans, there were more than enough of those#.

But readers with interests in economics and technology should also enjoy the book. The interurbans "flamed out" with a rapidity that is rare in American history. Harwood and Korach explain why the Lake Shore finally went bankrupt, and how management in a declining industry fought against the inevitable.

Mixed thoughts

The only problem I have with this book, is that there are many, many facts that conflict with the same data in Harry Christiansen's New Lake Shore Electric. Mr. Christiansen was an expert on the topic, and his facts must be taken as absolute fact. One example would be the eastbound car in the Vermilion wreck. This book erroneously lists it as #12 several times, but the car was actually #14, verified in a photo of the wreck, as well as Christiansen's text of the account in his book. The biggest fact is the building of the Sandusky Connecting Railway. Christiansen says 1926 whereas this book says 1931. Mr. Christiansen was alive and there to witness the line, so again, his must be taken as fact. I will give credit though, much remains a mystery. I'm sure Harwood and Korach may have corrected a few facts Harry got wrong. It goes both ways, so my recommendation is yes, buy this book and read it, but also buy Harry's book and read that. Then, you decide.

Reinventing Architecture

One of the few books that offers a non-superficial view on `reinventing architecture' - that is: renovation and interior design. From a conference it's a bit jumpy but most of these article / chapters are really interesting. One or two are a bit cumbersome. They're also focused on a range of issues and places: Australia, South Africa, the UK, the US to name a few. The editor has linked them to ensure it flows - and it does. It's a pity that the images are black and white but it looks great. That's not untypical of design books but in this case it doesn't hide shallow content. On the contrary, this book calls itself socio-political and tries to do the opposite of what happens in glossy books - especially the ones that flood the interior design market. It's also well written throughout. That's not common with this type of book with different authors often better at expressing themselves than others. It's much more than an introduction to its subject and requires prior knowledge of the subject matter - but it is one of the first books to look at its subject from this perspective. Overall, a must for students, academics and practitioners (I would say) involved in building renovation or interested in design as part of a bigger social and political context.

Reinventing Architecture

An attempt to underline the importance of building renovation. It is important of course. This emphasises it. It brings together authors from various countries who all discuss an issue that seems relevant to what the book calls socio-political issues. Some of the essays are better than others, as you would expect. One talks about the use of `waste' and links with environmental issues, another examines the building of a new South African identity through interiors of buildings, another does the same in the context of Belfast. It comes out of a conference but is a select set of the essays. Their diversity makes the book interesting. Their similarities are just evident enough to give it coherence. It's not 100% clear who it's for: architects, interior designers is the most obvious answer. But it could be of interest to other people as well - cultural theory bods, design historians etc. It's emphasis is contemporary design and social conditions but there are some references to major historical design issues too - Ruskin etc. It's well worth reading for those interested in architecture and interiors and gives an international perspective on renovation as well.
