The art of Dreaming & the 2nd attention

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, this current review inclusive, much has changed, as I have discovered much. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Jesus Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

This is the 5th book in the Carlos Castaneda series. One could read this book without having read the other books, but this would not be advisable. Here, Carlos returns to the deserts of Mexico in Search of Don Juan and meaning as to the events of the last book `Tales of Power'. The Nagual's, Don Juan and Don Genaro are not to be found. As is stated from the `editor's review', the first few chapters of this book deal with Carlos interacting with the sorceress Dona Soledad. Carlos's teachings continue not under the direction of these Nagual's, but with instruction left to the other disciples for Carlos Castaneda to work through. The interaction with these other disciples gives us a clearer understanding in the workings of Carlos Castaneda and Don Genaro.

This book presents us with `The art of dreaming' and `second attention'. Attention of Tonal "The capacity of average people to perceive and place their awareness on the ordinary world of everyday life. The first ring of power is our "awesome, but take-for-granted ability to impact order to our perception of our daily world." "The second domain (2nd ring of Power) was the attention of the Nagual; that is to say, the capacity of the sorcerer to place their awareness on the non-ordinary world". "Don Juan had said that our "first ring of power" is engaged very early in our lives and that we live under the impression that that is all there is to us. Our "Second ring of Power," the "attention of the Nagual," remains hidden for the immense majority of us, and only at the moment of our death is it revealed to us. There is a pathway to reach it, however, which is available to every one of us, but which only sorcerers take, and that pathway is through dreaming." "Dreaming" was in essence the transformation of ordinary dreams into affairs involving volition. Dreamers, by engaging their "attention of the Nagual" and focusing it on the items and events of their ordinary dreams, change those dreams into dreaming". Pg 278.

"First Attention, where we experience the Tonal, or the Second Attention where we experience the Nagual. To Castaneda the Tonal is often associated with the masculine aspect of the universe and the Nagual to the feminine. The Tonal can roughly be linked to the concept of Ego and the conscious mind." Carlos gives us the example of a table in the desert. The realm of the tonal deals with the objects placed upon the table. The 2nd ring of power of the Nagual, deals with standing back and becoming aware of all that goes beyond the table that is situated in a vast desert.

"The Nagual told me that human beings are frail creatures composed of many layers of luminosity. When you see them, they seem to have fibres, but those fibres are really layers, like an onion. Jolts of any kind separate those layers and can cause human beings to die" pg 290

"Sorcerers have to do their best to keep their own layers closed. That's why the Nagual taught us dreaming. Dreaming tightens the layers. When sorceress learn dreaming they tie together their tow attentions and there is no more need for that centre to push out". Do you mean that sorcerers do not die?" "That's right. Sorcerers do not die." Pg 291.

Carlos teaches us to access the second intention we should learn the art of gazing. For Carlos, Don Juan had taught to look into the distance without focusing onto specifics. In this book however we find that Don Juan has taught his other disciples the opposite depending upon the individual in question. Interesting to note here, for those that think that they can do the esoteric work themselves; having a master to guide us can pinpoint and expedite our progress depending upon our makeup, our personality etc. To one was given the task of gazing at a leaf (pg 294), a plant, a tree or rock; to another a fog or the rain (pg 297). "One could also gaze at water (still or running), smoke, fire or even a hung piece of cloth (pg 303).

"The difficulty in gazing is to learn to quiet down the thoughts. The Nagual said that he preferred to teach us how to do that with a pile of leaves because we could get all the leaves we needed any time we wanted to gaze. But anything else would do the same job. Once you stop the world you are a gazer. And since the only way of stopping the world was by trying, the Nagual made all of us gaze at leaves for years and years. I think it's the best way to reach our second attention. He combined gazing at dry leaves and looking for our hands in dreaming...The Nagual said that once you have trapped your second attention with dry leaves, you do gazing and dreaming to enlarge it. And that's all there is to gazing...The Nagual said that all we needed to do in order to trap our second attention was to try and try. All of us stopped the world by gazing at dry leaves." pg 295.

"The mad reign of King Monkey Mind can be overthrown by shifting the focus towards the second attention. The second attention can be cultivated by relaxing the search for meaning. This can be experienced by relaxing the tendency to project and/or assume meaning onto whatever is perceived, in lieu of direct perception of the phenomena. This can also occur by dropping labels through an agreement to experience the world without naming what you are experiencing. Infants and very young children see this way most of the time. This begins a process of flexing a perceptual muscle that was at one time active and vital before it weakened and/or atrophied." (Paratheatrical dot com)

For example, the Nagual made me gaze at the shadows of rocks, and then in my dreaming I found out that those shadows had light, so I looked for the light in the shadows form then on until I found it. Gazing and dreaming go together". Pg 308. Selah.

Having read this book one is still left wondering what has happened to these two Nagual's that gone to another dimension. Guess I'll have to read the 6th book in the Carlos Castaneda series - `The eagle's gift'.

About the Author

Patrick D. Howard, CISSP, CISM, is a senior consultant for SecureInfo, a Kratos Company. He has over 40 years experience in security, including 20 years service as a U.S. Army Military Police officer, and has specialized in information security since 1989. Mr. Howard began his service as the Chief Information Security Officer for the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Support Contract in Centennial, Colorado in March 2012. He previously served as CISO for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Rockville, Maryland from 2008–2012, and for the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2005–2008. Mr. Howard was named a Fed 100 winner in 2007, and is the author of three information security books: The Total CISSP Exam Prep Book, 2002; Building and Implementing a Security Certification and Accreditation Program, 2006; and Beyond Compliance: FISMA Principles and Best Practices, 2011. Mr. Howard is also an adjunct professor of Information Assurance at Walsh College, Troy Michigan. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1971 and a Master’s degree from Boston University in 1984.

CAP Study Guide

A good study guide and informative. I wish the book also came with some practice tests on CD or something similar. Also, full copies of the most recent policies and publications that are referenced through out the book would have helped immensely instead of having to spend time finding them on my own, from websites that are usually secured from the average user not working from a DoD network.

Pretty Good Prep Material

Its a read like all ISC books, but the content is pretty straight forward and the flow is logical, I will say that as a DoD IA professional there are some inaccuracies in the book, re: the book states that Physical (DoD 8500 PExx etc..) controls are inherited controls, this is not always true, it depends on the task, as an example, on an Army task I was on doing testing and C&A leading to issuance of an ATO all Physical and Personnel controls were NOT inherited, they were considered shared, shared by the site (in this case TRADOC) and Ft Eustis, both entities shared the responsibility and as the accrediting entity we could not write the controls off as "inherited" they either passed or failed-as directed by the Army ODAA, so as with all INFOSEC/IA/Info Security controls, either DoD 8500 or NIST 800.53, they are often very specific to the site environment, task, and branch and variances do exist, it is not always so cut and dry.

Reads like a boring dictionary

It reads like a dictionary and is not focused on exam topics. I have been doing this kind of work for years and have been CISSP since 2001. This book was more confusing than helpful because it is written so badly. It is just long winded vague and their is no effort to map it to a job skill. It is PURELY CONCEPTUAL. It will make reference to a specific NIST document, but it will not put any context to statements, the graphics are average to poor and generally the book puts you to sleep. I recommend a third party book if you are preparing for the exam or a 3rd party class if you are attempting to gain the skills.

About the Author

Axie Wu was a founder of ph4nt0m.org, one of China’s famous domestic security organizations. He is proficient in different offensive and defensive techniques with regard to web security. He joined Alibaba Co., Ltd, China, after his graduation from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2005 and became the youngest expert level engineer in Alibaba by 2007. He then designed the network security systems for Alibaba, Taobao, and Alipay. He was completely involved in the security development process for Alibaba, where he gained extensive experience in the field of application security. From 2011 onward, he has been a security architect in Alibaba, responsible for group-wide web security and cloud computing security. Wu is currently product vice president of Anquanbao.com and is responsible for the company’s product development and design. He also leads the Zhejiang chapter of OWASP China.

Lizzie Zhao graduated from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 2001. She then worked at a computer training institute in New York City. Two years later, she returned to China and took up work with the subsidiary of a software company at the institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as a project manager and system architect. In 2006, she joined the information technology promotion office of CECA (China E-Commerce Association). In 2007, she cofounded the RWStation (Beijing) Network Technology Co., Ltd., with other shareholders, and has since managed the company. From September 2011, Liz has focused her attention on China’s network security issues and has aimed to help enterprises in China with system security and network security business. She initiated the establishment of the Union SOSTC Alliance (Security Open Source Technology of China) with the help of other Chinese and overseas security experts. She is also a popular consultant for IT security service for various companies and for the Chinese government. Liz is currently the head of the STTC (Security Technology Training Center) and plans training activities with many universities in China, such as Northwestern Polytechnical University and Xidian University.

but what I have seen so far is very good.

I am taking a whitehat hacking class online for work. An exploit wasn't working on the lab machine I was attacking. I went to bing.com, typed google, and then searched for the exploit on google. I was able to figure out why the exploit wasn't working by using this book.

This book gives some interesting history of whitehat / blackhat hacking from a Chinese perspective in the first chapter. The book doesn't cover all the common tools, but what I have seen so far is very good.

Hard to understand

Although this book has a lot of good information, it's horribly written and very hard to understand. It seems like it was originally written in Chinese and then translated into broken English. The abundant grammatical errors and poor sentence structure confuses the reader and makes it hard to understand the topic. Almost all of the image examples are in Chinese!

Essential (and only) guide on starting agile teams

Liftoff is a wonderful little book that probably isn't getting enough attention. Regrettable. The authors Diana Larsen and Ainsley Nies are skilled facilitators and coaches and they got to write a book about starting agile teams or projects. Diana Larsen is known for her excellent Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great and Liftoff is similar in its concreteness. It is one of these books that, as a facilitator, you take with you and browse and at times simply copy to experiment with the ideas in it.

Probably one reason the book is not getting the attention is deserves (as far as I can see) is its title. The authors chose to use the term "liftoff" which is a new term over more descriptive titles such as "starting agile teams" or "agile chartering". They seem to have done so to not limit the scope and try to include all kind of kick-offs in the book. Personally, I think a bit more focus would have improved the book. Personally I think it should have been called "agile chartering" as more than half of the book is about that. Anyways, liftoff it is :)

The book consists of 2 parts and a bunch of appendixes. The first part is about Liftoffs in general and the second part about Agile chartering. The first part contains five chapters which describe what a liftoff is, what kind of liftoffs there are and how to plan, design and improve using liftoffs to launch teams.

The second part is about chartering. The authors define the PAC model, which stands for Purpose, Alignment, and Context. These are the parts that need to be clarified during the Agile Chartering session and each of these has its own chapter. The appendixes give example charters of a few different projects.

This book is a useful book. It isn't a wow book that changes your way of thinking, but it is a book that tells you very concretely how to do something. In this case, it tells you how to facilitate effective liftoffs and charters. As far as I know, it is the only book of its kind and it is so concrete and small that you take probably want to take it with you every time you are facilitating a liftoff. Browse it again, steal some ideas and experiment. From that perspective, this book is highly recommended for people who want to facilitate the launch of new teams. Four stars.

A proper beginning is useful...even in "agile"

I see it all the time in my agile coaching. Teams who, in their effort to be agile and get going, start sprinting/iterating too soon--before they know where they're going. It feels good to be moving, developing working software--so often this is the attraction. It's an intoxicating combination of feel good forward progress on the part of the team and leadership.

But more times than not, the team started too soon. They're building software but they haven't connected it towards the customers higher level problems & needs--so they're not delivering the value the customer desperately needs. Nor can they communicate what they'll deliver for a "release" and when.

They should have listened to Stephen Covey - about "Beginning with the End in Mind".

And they should have read this book. Diana and Ainsley have written what I think is the seminal work on how to properly START agile projects. They put a focus on the front of the line that is necessary and welcome.

Should every agile project perform a Liftoff? Probably not. But for the vast majority that should...this is the guide for how to get your goals established and feet underneath you before you start iterating towards delivery. How to charter to connect the team to the business and have a clarity around expectations.

And it's effective as a project recovery mechanism as well, for when you've started too soon but realize that fact and want to realign your efforts. So new liftoffs and recovery liftoffs are covered.

For me, if you're an agile coach, product owner, scrum master or literally anyone who is charged with starting agile projects, this book is a must read. And if you're a traditional project manager who is familiar with the notion of Project Charters, then this book will help map that knowledge to agile contexts. Either way, let's start Beginning with the End in Mind.
