From 1928 to 1943, Erich Raeder led the German navy during the last turbulent years of the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler, and through World War II, yet until now there has not been a full-length biography written about him. This study draws on archival resources and the rich scholarship of German naval history over the past five decades to review the evolution of Raeder's concept of naval strategy and his attempts to achieve the political and military means necessary to attain the navy's global naval ambitions. While previous histories have viewed Raeder as a product of the Wilhelmian era and heir to Admiral von Tirpitz's sea power ideology, this work clearly demonstrates the navy's affinity with Hitler's fascism. Author Keith Bird refutes Raeder's own argument that his navy was non-political and independent and shows him to be a political activist and the architect of German naval policy. For the first time, Raeder's strict leadership of the navy after 1928 and his relationship to Hitler and the National Socialist state is placed in the context of Raeder's formative years as an Imperial naval officer, his First World War combat experience, and his critical role in the survival and development of the post-war Reichsmarine. The author traces the impact of Hitler's influence on both the pace and nature of naval rearmament 1933-1939 and the conduct of the Kriegsmarine in war as well as Raeder's furtive attempts to influence Germany's strategic thinking in favor of a maritime strategy. Blinded by his need to justify the navy's existence and achieve his vision of world power, Raeder was ultimately defeated by the contradictions in his own policies as well as Hitler's and the realities of Germany's resources and military necessities.

About the Author
Keith W. Bird has published extensively in German naval and military history, including the critically acclaimed German Naval History: A Guide to the Literature. Now Chancellor of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System in Versailles, Kentucky, he studied at the Free University (Berlin) as a Fulbright scholar after earning his PhD from Duke University and received a German fellowship to the Military History Research Office in Freiburg.

Important addition

Most familiar with the German Navy and World War Two are familiar with only two things, the U-Boat threat to England and the battleship Bismark. If they are familiar with German commanders at sea they know only of Donitz, who surrendered the Third Reich in 1945. But this book shifts the focus from Donitz and the submarines and looks at German naval policy in reference to her big ships. Raeder was a product of World War One and the idea that Germany could have a fleet that would challenge Britain. Particularly he was influenced by Tirpitz and Scheer and Von Spee and the heroics of the merchant raiders. However he had his own ideas. This book sheds light on his relations with Nazism, which previously was never exposed, and this is an interesting insight. Raeders ideas were obscure and useless in the long run and never played themselves out, the Tirpitz and Bismark were destroyed(but not before the Hood) and Raeder went into obscurity. Nevertheless this is an interesting story of the German Navy and its officers in the shadow of nazism. A worthwhile contribution.

Fills a Gap in WW II history

Raeder has always been one of those 'Oh yeah, there was this admiral' type figures in the German history of World War II. So much more attention has been paid to submarines and Donitz that Raeder is just forgotten.

A couple of points become very clear in this excellent biography:

First was Raeder's affinity, if not devotion, to Hitler and his cause. It doesn't seem that he was so involved with things like the holocaust and slave labor as some of the others, but it is clear that he was a Hitler supporter.

Second was Raeder's belief in the traditional 'Big Gun' surface ships. As was proven in World War II, the effort spent on this part of the German Navy was clearly a mistake. The money would have been much better spent on development of advanced submarines and especially on developing air power. Air power may have just gotten him in more conflict with Goring, but this might have worked out much better if approached at the beginning of the Hitler period. As it was, Naval Air did do a lot of damage with the few FW-200s they had.

A well written book that fills a gap in World War II history.

I loved this book

I loved this book! I enjoyed the historical knowledge and the story line. There was a few editing issues but the story kept you wanting to know what happens next. Ms. Sanders did a excellent job of keeping you guessing and the ending was not what you were expecting. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and to see what Olivia and Theo will be up against in the next book.

It has all the makings of a great read: mystery

I want to put a disclaimer right from the beginning: This book has a lot of graphic sex scenes in it. (I skipped over those)
I have been pondering how I would review this novel. It's not my normal genre that I read. That being said, this book was exciting, well written, descriptive without being too wordy, and overall a roller coaster ride!
It is a murder mystery of epic proportions. It has all the makings of a great read: mystery, romance, and magic.I expect this book to go far!

MERCY - FAIRLY DONE

MERCY is a fairly well done supernatural thriller, building to a tense climax that will surprise you. Most characters are well fleshed, a few a bit cardboard. My only nitpick is that the character from the past caught up way too quickly, even having sex with a woman he hardly knew.

I have read the book through once, & I am about to start reading it for the second time. It is absolutely an AMAZING book.
This is Mabels best book ever. Each chapter you read, you can fee.e.e.e.l your heart saying YES.S. & understanding the truths at a deep level. It has blown me away. I will write another review when I can wrap my mind around what Mabel is trying her hardest to get through to us all. We need to think, & feel more with our heart's & keep our intellect & mind out of the way. Yes the cleaning is difficult to do all of the time. I find If I read at least one chapter a day it helps to keep me focused on doing the cleaning. I highly recommend it!!

I just recently "found" Ho oponopono and wanted to learn more about it. I bought 3 books on it. This one, "The Sovereignity of Love" and Zero Limits". Both this book and "The Sovereignity of Love" are fantastic. Both are quick reads with a big impact. I have been putting this into practice in my life and am noticing a difference in both how I feel and how I interact with others as well as how they respond to me. It truly is "easy". I have always known that our outer world is merely a reflection of our inner world. This is a wonderful, uplifting way to clean up your inner world. I realize that it may seem too easy and that change requires a lot of hard work but I am firm believer that letting go is the key. This book shows you how to do that. I highly recommend it

Zero is beautiful

Mabel has a gentle and respectful way of writing. You are not pounded with absolutes but gently reminded of something you forgot as part of your daily self care. This is the second book I've read and I can't wait for her next book.
