About the Author
John Paul Lederach has worked in international reconciliation for more than thirty years. He has developed training in conflict transformation and provided direct mediation and support services for reconciliation efforts in some of the most violently conflicted regions across five continents.
Lederach has consulted with the highest-level government officials and national opposition movements in war-torn settings like Nicaragua, Somalia, Northern Ireland, Colombia, Nepal, and the Philippines.

As professor of international peacebuilding and director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Lederach is the founding director of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Virginia.

He is the author of twenty-two books and manuals and numerous academic articles and monographs on peace education, conflict transformation, and mediation training. Lederach s books have been translated into more than a dozen languages, and he is in international demand as a lecturer, consultant, and mediation trainer.

Such a good, good book

Such a good, good book. I was leery when I first picked it up because a lot of books like this are too deep and complicated for me to get through. Not so this one. It is very readable. While I am concerned about wars and conflicts I read about in the news, I am like most people, more concerned about my own relationships and the conflicts that arise there. This book is good for both. The author uses examples of conflict situations in the Bible, such as the one between Jacob & Esau, to help us better understand the reasons for conflict and also the methods to bring resolution and healing to such a situation. Its straightforward and practical. I highly recommend it for personal use and for group study.

This is not a book to leaving sitting on the shelf.

After describing the horrifying evening when he was informed that his daughter was the target of a kidnapping plot aimed at undermining his peace building efforts in Costa Rica, John Paul Lederach wrote the following paragraph:

I can no longer take John 3:16 as a short formula for salvation. I can only understand it as a foundational principle of reconciliation. It is an ethic based on willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of an enemy. It is an ethic undergirded by and made possible only through the immeasurable love and grace of God.

This statement is pivotal to Lederach’s approach to conflict resolution which involves approaching your enemy in the hope of understanding him and finding common ground rather than attempting to force him into accepting your point of view.

When my son, Christian Piatt, first recommended this book to me, I told him it would probably be over my head. I’m a lazy intellectual, and I have to keep reference sources close at hand when reading a lot of what he reads, as well as some of what he writes. He assured me that Reconcile was written in a narrative style that makes it an enjoyable as well as an educational read. He was right. Lederach’s stories draw the reader into the personal lives of his own family and of those he has met in his ministry of reconciliation while also teaching how to find the truth, justice, mercy, and peace that are so lacking in our conflicted world.

I was further concerned that, since Lederach’s work is global in scope, his insights would have little practical application for a small-world person like me. While I am aware of the chaos that makes up the nightly news, and I attempt to vote and live in a responsible manner, my primary focus is geared more toward the people whose lives touch mine on a more personal level, both here in small town America and on the Internet where my life intersects with others through my writings and theirs. However, the path to conflict transformation outlined in Reconcile is applicable to individuals, churches, and workplace environments as well as an international setting.

Christian recently posted an interview with the author on his blog. Following is his last question and Lederach’s answer.

If you had one dream for the impact this book would have, what would it be?

That it provokes reflection and meaningful conversation that leads to taking a risk, maybe a small step, toward building better, more healthy relationships in and through the many conflicts life affords us.

This book is an interesting read but not an easy one. It’s not one to be scanned and put back on the shelf. Instead, it is a text to return to often, to meditate over, to share in a group study. If enough of us read, understand, and live these truths, perhaps Lederach’s dream will come true.

Powerful, personal stories from a life-long peace advocate

Amazing book. Insightful and practical. You really have to sit with this one for even as he is telling his own stories of real events (some rather harrowing) as a peacemaker/mediator, you have to decide what/how you are going to do it in your own life.

His "three steps to making an enemy" is powerful because we all do it, knowingly or unknowingly. Step 1 is Separate yourself from the person, see only the differences and not the commonalities. 2. See yourself as superior, not like the other person. 3. Dehumanize the other person, and deprive them of the qualities that make them human. That's an Rx for the Nazi's extermination of the Jews, POW camps and 100 of other historic events. And it's our action every time we demonize a mass murderer or anyone else we don't like.

This is a small book, but do not let that lure you into thinking it won't challenge your thinking. We did a sermon series on Peace at our Presbyterian church and people admitted that they were challenged by the call to be peacemakers when everyone's natural reaction to things done to them is to hate or be angry. That is all too easy. And Lederbach, who has dedicated his life to the promotion of peace, knows what he is talking about. Heck, he helped with peace talks with the Sandanistas in Nicaragua and lived to tell about it!

This clever, funny, creative Christmas book made me smile, laugh and feel a Christmas tug in my heart. The plot is smartly crafted, developing from a zany, compelling beginning into a sweet, unexpected conclusion. The characters are hysterical and so smartly illustrated that I laughed out loud (and I'm a grown up), yet the message delivered is such a positive one. This is a book that appeals to all ages, with many different levels of writing and humor, but it especially fills a need for Christmas books for 9 yo and up. It will become a Christmas classic around our house.

Fun!!!!!

Bobbie has to try to rescue Christmas for her little brother Tad. To do that she must go to other side to disable the Watcher while dealing with Ninja Santa, Larry the Reindeer, and "crazy" Uncle who lives in their basement.

I loved the story and characters. I laughed out loud. The drawings are as much a part of the story as the words. A perfect story for the Christmas season. Just like Bobbie, you'll never see Christmas the same way again.

Doing Church as a Team

Pastor Wayne captures the essence of Ephesians Chapter Four and the heart of effective ministry that is "gift based" and driven by volunteers rather than paid professionals. The key to the book is that God has placed gifts, dreams and abilities in each person and they must be seen as valuable. Release those dreams and passions and with very little motivation these people will serve and become a mobilized force living out their God given passion. This book has helped our local church to become far more successful and have a greater impact on our community. We have grown in numbers and in volunteers here in our California church.
I highly recommend it to you. The leaders New Hope (Wayne's church) is raising up and deploying is amazing.

Practical review

This book reinforced a lot of what I have previously read and experienced regarding team leadership. However, it also contains quite a few gems that I had not previously considered.

One example is the development of servant-leaders. I have always used the traditional means: train someone, mentor them, and prepare them to take over when it's time for the leader to leave. Cordeiro's approach is different. He still advocates training and mentorship, but adds the dimension of "working through" others. This involves not only using the gifts/talents God has given us, but also actively seeking out others who are like-minded, teaming up with them, and developing them to take the leadership role. In this way, no one becomes indispensable. This concept takes leader development one significant step further than the process with which I was familiar.

Having just read Neil Cole's Organic Church, I found it interesting how much Cordeiro and Cole differ on church organization. Both authors base their reasoning on fractals and repeating patterns. Both authors also point out that churches need to be "organic" (Cordeiro calls church an "organism"). Yet, while Cole recommends a scattered, non-linear organization, Cordeiro recommends teams (and teams within teams) based on five members (ten members counting spouses). Although both are based on Biblical concepts, it seems to me that Cordeiro's recommendations would be a lot more practical for anything but the smaller congregations.

Unlike many books I've read about transforming churches, this one contains a lot of practical advice. As Cordeiro points out, no successful church model can be exactly duplicated at another church; there are just far too many variables in play (the main one being God's will!). However, the principles he lays out help me understand how such a transformation can take place.

One key principle is that the church needs to be in alignment. Too often, folks pursue whatever ministry or mission that strikes their fancy, and even convince the congregation to fund their activities. That's fine, but we need to agree on God's vision and purpose of the church, and then make sure our ministries line up with that vision and purpose.

Another key principle that really spoke to me was the need to keep visible reminders about our church culture, vision, and purpose. It's one thing to seek and understand God's vision and purpose for a church (which is a great accomplishment in itself). It's another great step forward to capture that vision and purpose (and resulting values/culture) and keep them on display for all to see. This reinforces members while communicating to visitors and guests.

One final principle I'll mention (since there are too many to capture here): the dependency on healthy relationships. Many books about church transitions mention relationships, especially how Christian relationships should reflect the relationship within the Godhead and between God and Christians. But Cordeiro nails it when he emphasize that---no matter how great the church programs may be---they won't be a success without healthy relationships within the church. Any church in transition needs to fix relationships before they start trying to create new programs.

On a larger view, this book is a great guide on how to "do church." Every ministry and mission in the church depends on a team---even a team of two or three. Therefore, it's critical to know how to determine, develop, organize, and set up those teams for success. Even more important is having people serve in the right places, connecting people with God's purpose for them.

A new perspective with new insight.

I find this book is very helpful to give new perspective on assessing horse races. All the other books I have fail to describe why their selected example winners aren't just luck, this book shows why.

He uses plenty of examples to describe how you go about choosing your performance factors based on hard measured figures, then how to estimate the probability and find overlays. Importantly he shows how to identify which factors matter and those that don't. If you want to follow the maths, it can be heavy going, but the excel programs do the heavy lifting for you. There's enough layman explanations to keep you up to speed so you know what he is trying to show. There's also some interesting war stories about what it's like on the inside of a betting syndicate.

If you want to round out your betting knowledge but don't know excel this will be your best excuse to learn it! The book definitely covers material that I've never seen published elsewhere. This will be a reference along side my Automated Exchange betting and Efficiency of Racetrack Betting Markets.

I think this will help anyone trying to get to grips with the maths of gambling, its examples are from Hong Kong racing but the practical application of underlying principles can be applied to all sorts of markets.

This is a Hard Read

This book is a hard read. First, it was originally written in Chinese and it is clear that the translator's first language is not English, because the grammar is incorrect in places. Next, it is written at above high school reading level and covers statistics formulas that can be difficult to understand at first (at least they were for me). However, I believe this can be a very valuable resource. If you already have an understanding of handicapping and are willing to do the work to learn the statistical formulas presented in the book, then I believe you can wager profitably at the racetrack.

If you are looking for a book to teach you handicapping skills, then this book is not for you. However, if you already have a good knowledge of handicapping and are looking for something to help your wagering become profitable, then perhaps you should give this book a look.

The Best of a Bad Bunch

Most horse racing books suffer from one or more of these flaws:
1. They were written 20-30 years ago and either:
a. The game has changed - for example, many systems have rules like "discard any horse that has had more than a 10 day layoff," (Ainslie) which in the 21st century would eliminate entire fields, even entire programs of horses.
b. The methods still work (speed ratings) to pick winners but are so widely known as to depress the parimutuel prices *below* just picking horses at random, or betting all favorites.
2. the systems within NEVER worked and have no scientific basis (95% of others). The author cannot make money at handicapping, only at writing. Cherrypicked anecdotal evidence is given: old racing forms are reprinted, and the author works through his selection method, showing you how he picked the "obvious" 15-1 winner. Of course, he never (except Beyer) highlights the numerous examples where he was wrong, using the same methods.
3. The book spends many pages explaining how to keep records and calculate speed and pace ratings, when today, computer databases and spreadsheets are prevalent and equal or higher quality figures are printed in the Form or its competitors.

#3 is a proper method, these books (Quirin is the best example) are merely outdated, but at least are based in science and show HOW a winning system could be constructed using sound mathematical principles.

Wong picks up where Quirin left off. Not just a "system," he shows you how to use statistics to analyze data. Think of it as a math book where all the examples come from horse racing. Realize that though he provides many helpful tips, this is a work-intensive process. It's also somewhat challenging, though with careful study, and some external work, even the average educated reader will benefit. If you're mathematically deficient, and don't want to put in the work, you won't get much out of the book. I would rate the math required to understand the book as "Statistics I" and "Probability I" in college. Wong provides about 20 (downloadable) spreadsheets to aid the reader.

There are two flaws with the book:
1. The English is poor. While 99% understandable, nearly every sentence contains a grammatical mistake. I found myself reading each sentence, having to think about it for a second, then proceeding to the next. This could have been easily corrected by the publisher. I could do it myself, just fixing the errors, and not having to translate the Chinese from scratch.
2. Even though this edition has been "Westernized", it's based on Hong Kong racing. This isn't as big a problem as you would think. Wong doesn't make blanket statements like "bet every horse who..." or "the best jockeys are...," and teaches the reader to think for himself. However, a few minor confusions arise. When he talks about "barriers" in races, I initially thought he was referring to some sort of steeplechase race, until I realized he meant "post position".

Despite the flaws, I must give the book a five-star rating. It's a serious and workable approach to actually "beating the races." Beating the races may entail hundreds of hours of work, and your time may be better spent in other pursuits, but if you're determined, this book will be an invaluable headstart. If there were dozens of other good, more neatly written handicapping tracts published in the last 20 years, I would not rate the book so highly. But there are certainly not.

Awesome story

This fun read is about a young girl going into the foreboding junior high years whose family moves from west coast California to east coast Virginia as if junior high isn't difficult enough. Drew escapes the ridicule of her California peers also leaving behind the love of her life only to have it replaced by a new villain and hunky junior high boy. The author delves into those awkward years as culture shocked Drew adjusts to her new surroundings and that ever present junior high need to fit in socially. She vies for the attention of the popular while falling into the hands of the ordinary and has a great epiphany to what and who "real friends" are.

Terri Klaes Harper uses great illustration through character and dialogue to draw in the reader and keep the pages of the book turning. I started this read before work and couldn't wait until after work to finish it and did that I did in one day. The book is truly that good! It is a must read for young adults finding themselves trapped in Drew's reality to adults who remember those tragic drama filled years. I am currently and not so patiently awaiting the sequel.

I especially made a connection with this book as I have taught junior high for several years now and found this novella to put a humorous but true spin on the realities of junior high. I envisioned my students playing various characters which actually gave me laughter pains by the time I finished.

Memoirs of an Ordinary Girl by Terri Klaes Harper is a young adult novel focusing on the prepubescent life and times of Drew Hotchner. Set around the turn of the 1980's, Drew's personal growth seems threatened to be stuck in gear by relocating from trendy California to conservative Virginia. Yet the moral to Harper's story is about how the adolescent journey is predicated on the interaction between other teenagers sharing their life experiences. The influence of society and fashion trends have far lesser effect as the biggest changes come from within rather than the arbitrary (and contrary) whims of a fickle world.

The author's use of first-person narrative makes it easy to relate to Drew and her simplistic view of life in the town of Florntayor. Her first impressions are of a traveler through space and time. She arrives in a world where Big K is a mall unto itself and the only communication with the outside world is through local stations dominated by Fifties sit-coms (which it all resembles). Only she gravitates toward Adrienne Pierce, who she describes as someone more interested in her as a person than as `the new girl'. There is also Violet Foxx, preoccupied that she becomes part of an undefined 'in-crowd', and Heather Frimby, who soon becomes her rival in competing for the affections of Danny Raymond. The three girls become key players in Drew's life drama as she learns that life is not so much what you make of it as how you settle into it.

This novel is a smoothly-flowing, intimate account that presents its main character as a likable girl who sees things in a way that is reminiscent of most of our own experiences in that stage of development. It is the kind of narrative that will make teen audience relate to those days of self-discovery. For older readers, Memoirs of an Ordinary Girl by Terri Klaes Harper is guaranteed to bring back lots of memories.

If you remember middle school then this book is for you!! And if you will be in middle school it is most definitely for you.

I am a science fiction, vampire, zombie, dystopia kind of fan. If this book had any or all of those I would have loved it and given it five stars. As such, I really liked it, hence the four stars. I suppose the middle school element could give it a dystopia feel. Either way, I enjoyed this book for a couple of reasons. Character development is spot on. I liked the main character and really felt for what she was going through. The other characters were well thought out and relatable--even the ones I didn't like as much. Another thing I liked was that parts of the narrative reminded me of my own time in middle school. Even at this point in my life it is nice to see that those experiences, both the good and the bad, were shared by many of us, and we survived. That is why I think any one who knows a middle school girl should buy this book. A final reason I like this book is the ending which I am not going to spoil. Suffice it to say that our heroine reaches an understanding, one that makes the reader feel like she will be okay no matter what. And if we get to follow her through a sequel that would be great, but she is definitely okay.
