A beautiful, worthwhile read...

This is the most soul-nourishing book I’ve read in a good while. Several times throughout its reading, my heart swelled with gratitude for Eric Butterworth. His words have the power to shift your perspective and enliven your spirit – it did for me…though, I suspected it would, as I’ve experienced this with all his audio lectures. It’s a perfect book to read a few pages from prior to meditation or prayer to set your mood. His words are inspiring, empowering, meditative, and easy to read. I’m so grateful for this book, and it will be one that remains on my Kindle.

FYI: the Kindle version does have formatting issues throughout that can interrupt reading flow. Until this is straightened out, if you come across part of a sentence where the words don’t make sense, it’s because some of the letters of one word are attached to the next word. Once I realized what was going on, I could understand the sentence. I look forward to these ‘issues’ being quickly resolved.

A Classic for a Reason

A professor teaching my Open Channel Flow class stated that this book is widely regarded as "The Bible" of open channel hydraulics. After reviewing a library copy, I was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself. The text is written in a clear, concise language that is sorely lacking in other texts. His chapter on energy and momentum principles is especially good. Sure, it's an old text (1959) but 98% of this book is still relevant. There's a reason it still in print; engineers love it and continue to buy it!
Incidentally, I found the review of this book by Hubert Chanson to be at best, disingenuous. He rates the book with only one star (every other reviewer gave it 5 stars) while at the same time recommending a "better" text that he fails to mention he authored and is out of print! There's one in every crowd.

The Classic Text

In the fall semester of 1980, I sat a class in the civil engineering department of the University of Missouri--Rolla on open channel hydraulics. The instructor used Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics as the text. I was a dual-enrolled senior at the time and this course counted toward my graduate degree.

If it's possible to fall in love with an engineering textbook, I did -- with this one. I spent a lot of time with the text, both as a student, then later as a professional, then later yet as a teacher of young civil engineers. This has to be one of the best-written textbooks I've owned, ever. The writing is clear, lucid, and precise. Chow really knew his open channels, and it shows.

The text is clearly dated, hence the "classic reissues" monogram. The text contains material that is no longer useful, except in a historic sense. Much of the material presented on backwater-curve analysis is no longer used. Our computers are adept at applying the direct-step and standard-step methods (both topics are well-treated in the text), so the hand-computation methods are outdated. Furthermore, the technologies presented in the chapters describing unsteady flow in open channels are also dated because we have numerical computation methods more sophisticated than those available in the late 1950's.

Those topics are NOT what makes this an excellent textbook. It is the clear descriptions and derivations of fundamental principles that make Chow a classic. That material is timeless and remains the emphasis of my personal teaching of young engineers. Technologies change; fundamentals do not. For that reason alone I continue to use and recommend Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics to my students and colleagues.

If I could have only one reference on open channels, this would be it. It is the book I return to and refer to whenever I need to know something about fundamental open channels. When I need newer technology, I go to the journal literature. But when I need to teach or review the fundamentals, I pick up my copy of Chow.

I want to affirm the comments of another reviewer that Chanson's review is subject to bias--he is the author of another open-channels text.

A must-have for hydraulic engineers

This is the foundational text of modern open-channel hydraulics. All engineers should have a copy. The only negative review on this page (or that I have ever heard) is by an author (Hubert Chanson) of books which compete with this one.

Embracing Defeat tells the story of the transformation of Japan under American occupation after World War II. When Japan surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Forces in August 1945, it was exhausted; where America's Pacific combat lasted less than four years, Japan had been fighting for 15. Sixty percent of its urban area lay in ruins. The collapse of the authoritarian state enabled America's six-year occupation to set Japan in entirely new directions.

Because the victors had no linguistic or cultural access to the losers' society, they were obliged to govern indirectly. Gen. Douglas MacArthur decided at the outset to maintain the civil bureaucracy and the institution of the emperor: democracy would be imposed from above in what the author terms "Neocolonial Revolution." His description of the manipulation of public opinion, as a wedge was driven between the discredited militarists and Emperor Hirohito, is especially fascinating. Tojo, on trial for his life, was requested to take responsibility for the war and deflect it from the emperor; he did, and was hanged. Dower's analysis of popular Japanese culture of the period--songs, magazines, advertising, even jokes--is brilliant, and reflected in the book's 80 well-chosen photographs. The writing of history doesn't get much better than this. MIT professor Dower (author of the NBCC Award-winning War Without Mercy) offers a dazzling political and social history of how postwar Japan evolved with stunning speed into a unique hybrid of Western innovation and Japanese tradition. The American occupation of Japan (1945-1952) saw the once fiercely militarist island nation transformed into a democracy constitutionally prohibited from deploying military forces abroad. The occupation was fraught with irony as Americans, motivated by what they saw as their Christian duty to uplift a barbarian race, attempted to impose democracy through autocratic military rule. Dower manages to convey the full extent of both American self-righteousness and visionary idealism. The first years of occupation saw the extension of rights to women, organized labor and other previously excluded groups. Embracing Defeat is an authoritatively researched and beautifully written account of the U.S. occupation of Japan by a leading specialist on World War II, Japan and the U.S.-Japan relationship. This is a work that pulls no punches. Like no earlier study, it brings to the fore the ironies and contradictions of the era and casts fresh light on several of the great political issues of the era: the making of Japan's postwar constitution, U.S.-Japan relations, the reconstruction of economy and society, the role of Japan in the making of the U.S. order in Asia, and the role of MacArthur. It also offers the first cultural history of the occupation.It is particularly valuable in bringing out Japanese contributions to shaping occupation outcomes. Embracing Defeat is a pleasure to read.Dower takes the reader on a tour that reveals ambiguity, irony, fallibility, vitality, dynamism, messianic fervor, theatre of the absurd, the world turned upside down, fall and redemption, flotsam and jetsam on a sea of self-indugence, cynical opportunism, top-to-bottom corruption, delicacy and degeneration, despondency and dreams, tragedy and farce, boggling fatuity, and carnival, to mention a few of the polarities that run through this beautifully written and astute volume.

Fascinating: comprehensive but still readable!

Having read this book, it seems that I now know somewhat more about the post-WWII American occupation of Japan than do many of my native Japanese friends! This is a fascinating and comprehensive account of that period, covering not only the chronological facts, but also examining interpersonal relationships and underlying tensions between Japan's leaders and their foreign overlords. Despite the astonishing level of factual detail, the author has succeeded in producing a readable and even entertaining narrative: a book that makes good bedtime reading. I was particularly interested in the analysis of how the occupiers' imposition of self-contradictory standards on Japanese "democracy" forced the defeated country to develop attitudes that were subsequently derided as "typically Japanese"!

Well written and good online companion. Easy to read and understand but an awful lot of vocabulary. Goes with the subject matter I guess. Excellent graphics. I wish they were available online to print and add to study notes.
