a heart-warming true story of an immigrant from Georgia, Rus

This is the story of a man who loved America from the moment he set foot on our shores. He said, and never changed his mind that, in America, "Anything Can Happen." There are many vignettes in his book, telling of his adventures and misadventures in America, but he never changed his opinion that he loved America, even though he sought the companionship of other Georgians. This book was made into a movie which fell far short of the book, which dealt with his honesty, integrity, and love for all pertaining to America and his fellow men. This book is heart-warming, poignant, and often brings a tear to the eye; in other parts it brings a chuckle or a laugh or a general thumbs-up. I have read the book a number of times not only to myself, but aloud to my family, especially when traveling. Exceptionally enjoyable were vignettes about Dzea Vanno, the wager about fitting a Nash wheel on their vehicle, Luba--who had the disposition of a camel, and at a party, his saying, regarding food, that "...only too much was ever enough", plus being outside and listening to "...people being happy and enjoying themselves in his home" (paraphrased). I heartily recommend this book to anyone!

Best Laugh Therapy

I love this book and have read it many times. When I have a friend who needs cheering up, I loan them my copy. It is usually passed around to their family & friends before I get it back. If ever one is in need of hope, this story provides a beautiful example of people helping, loving, laughing and eating together. It is the quintessential story of immigration to America with its deprivation, hard work and eventual success. With the help of Georg's wife, it is told with the indiosyncratic syntax of a non-native speaker of English which makes you feel the author is telling his adventures to you directly. Papashvily was an amazing person and one of the few authors that I would love to have spent an evening with listening to his stories. This makes a great gift of joy to anyone you know.

A laugh, an inspiration

This collection of humorous short stories describes America as seen through the eyes of an immigrant from the country of Georgia who first stepped foot in the USA in the early 1920s.

First published in 1945, it was co-written by Mr. Papashvily and his wife Helen in the author's original style of "Georgian" English. The author was, according to Wikipedia, a famous writer and sculptor who was listed in Who's Who in the categories of both writing and art. Chapters in this book deal with topics such as getting a job (the author was trained in Georgia as a swordmaker and a decorative leatherworker), joining a labor strike, going to court for a crime he didn't commit, helping a friend work his way through depression (the cure: Uncle John's garlic sauce, freshly grilled shish kebobs, and a fight with a trio of Italian/American farmers who thought the Georgians' picnic fire on the beach was set by bootleggers to attract their boats, but later contributed their own homemade wine when invited to join the party), marriage (Uncle John, a restaurateur, catered the wedding feast and it sounds delicious!), and trying to find someone--anyone--who could speak the author's little-known native language (eventually he succeeded).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who remembers America as it was sixty-plus years ago, and/or who is ready for some thought-provoking humor.

Even more fantastic dragons!

DragonArt Evolution expands on the previous book from J. "NeonDragon" Peffer, DragonArt, giving a full treatment to the art of drawing dragons. As in her previous book, she provides a plethora of easy to follow step-by-step instructions with her inspiring art. This is an amazing book for anyone who loves dragon-inspired art, or wants to create their own dragon artwork.

The sections in the Introduction were repeated from the first DragonArt book, with the exception of Color And Pattern Considerations. In contrast, Part 1 is much elaborated and detailed than similar sections in the before mentioned book. However, Part 2 is the best part of this book, with page after page full of tutorials about drawing dragons. Here you will learn how to draw all sort of dragons, showing dragon heads from front, side and 3/4 view, and full dragon views. I also found the Dragon Scene section to be interesting albeit short, providing an overview on how the scenes found in this book were painted digitally.

There should be plenty of dragons for every one in this book. However, 144 pages were not enough for me, but that is because I can never get enough from J. Peffer's artwork.

Evolution - better than the last two

I grabbed this book mostly because of a desire to have some of the art available for browsing on my shelf, and not so much because I needed help drawing. As someone who's been comfortable with the way I draw my own dragons for some time, let me say that this book can still be just as enjoyable and helpful for new dragon artists as it is for those of you who've been drawing for a little while. It is packed with things like choosing color combos and patterns, variations on limbs, physical features such as horns, drawing baby dragons - things that could even be applied to other fantasy creatures, in some cases. I will agree with what has already been said, and that is that this book doesn't cover just one type of dragon. You will find options to consider for western dragons, eastern dragons ... heck, even a little bit of the undead.

Perhaps one of my favorite parts to this book is the last few pages. The artist has inserted a brief section on how she creates and colors her art digitally. This was particularly interesting for me to see, since observing another artist's methods is always fun.

Over all, I would say that this book is geared more toward the new/intermediate artist. However, that doesn't mean that as an accomplished professional, you have to rule it out :)

Great book for someone who really wants to understand how the language works

I'm an advanced Japanese speaker and professional translator, and I initially purchased this book to supplement grammatical explanations I was giving to friends to whom I was teaching Japanese. It was extremely helpful and I couldn't recommend it more.

This is a grammar book for someone who is really interested in how the Japanese language works and loves the language. I think it would be the perfect supplement to a more general sort of catch-all textbook. Also, this isn't only a book for people just starting Japanese; this is a book that I, as an advanced speaker, found was a great way to revisit the fundamentals of the language and deepen my own understanding.

It's true that the use of romaji can be a bit distracting until you train yourself to ignore it and focus on the kana/kanji (which is also provided). But I think this is a) an issue that most beginner books have for non-beginners who try to read them and b) a compromise made to make the book more useful to linguistics students who want to study Japanese grammar but who don't have time to learn the writing system, as well as beginners to are still very slow at reading kana and for whom trying to read the kana would detract from learning the grammar. I don't think that the book suffers from its use of romaji at all. The point of this book is not reading practice; it's grammar comprehension, and that's where it really excels.

For an elementary grammar book, this text offers an excellent amount of detail on some topics that are glossed over (or never mentioned at all) in most beginning books. Some examples:

-A very interesting treatment of the distinctions between not just concrete uses of kore/sore/are, but how to properly choose the right modifier for abstract references, as well.
-An informative and comprehensive discussion of differences between using "no" and "koto" to nominalize verbs and adjectives
-A better discussion of counting words than I've seen in any other beginner book
-Very comprehensive and easy-to-understand explanations of differences between itadaku/morau/ageru/kureru/kudasaru
-An entire section on the grammar of "apologizing and thanking," which is something any Japanese speaker is going to find themselves doing a lot :)

Something that I really like about this grammar book is that it's dense and precise with information, but in a very readable way. It doesn't water down explanations, but it gets them *right* rather than a hand-wavy "sometimes this means this but don't worry about the times when it doesn't" sort of explanation.

I couldn't recommend this book more as a way to get a more solid grasp of the fundamentals of the language. The intermediate book is great too: Intermediate Japanese: A Grammar and Workbook (Grammar Workbooks)

I love everything by Shoko Hamano

I love everything by Shoko Hamano. She (and her co-author) writes clearly without complex linguistic explanations, making the text understandable and approachable. The exercises in the back of each chapter are nice, too. The text isn't exhaustive, but the coverage is germane to advanced beginners with a bit of kanji knowledge. I will be getting her intermediate book as soon as I have finished this one.

A fun, clean, innocent little tale that's full of feminine frills

What could be more dangerous than four teenage girls with wild ideas and far too much time on their hands? Not much, especially when one of them has something to prove, fate dangles the bait of a county fair womanless pageant before them, and there’s three months of car payments on the line when they Bet I Can Feminize My Brother! Their poor, unwitting – and unwilling – brothers have no idea what they’re in for.

For one brother, it begins with a little blackmail, fueled by photos of a sleepy feminization. For another, it begins with a little ego stroking and outright bribery. For one lucky brother, it’s pretty much a dream come true, no blackmail or coercion required, while for the last . . . well, feminization involves a lot of brute force and big sister bullying. The point being, no matter what your tastes in feminization schemes or sissy boy mindsets, there’s bound be one brother’s story in which you can lose yourself.

Much to my delight, the pageant itself takes up nearly half the story, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the sissies on display. There are some interesting thoughts regarding gender expressed amidst all the laughs and embarrassment, and even if the pageant itself doesn’t end quite as it should (these things are always rigged), there’s a cute little opening left by Claire Bear & Courtney Captisa for a sequel.

All-in-all, a fun, clean, innocent little tale that's full of feminine frills, and sure to please the most curious of brothers or sisters.

There is something in "Bet I Can Feminize My Brother" for all fans of the genre with the various ways the sisters trick, coerce, and force their brothers into sissy hood. It's very easy to identify with the characters and experience the thrills along with them as they prepare for and participate in the women-less pageant. It will be hard to resist putting one's self in their shoes... both literally and figuratively!

This story was amazing! It was nice seeing the different techniques and tactics the girls used- plus the unique ways the boys failed! I'd love to see more stories about the girls in the future!
