Cheap paper in the book. The book was ex library and seems to have never been borrowed.

The information in the book seems to be encompassed in the A2 size fold out Root Cause Map from EQE International.
Have put it aside for a rainy day. Will only read up to page 35 and skip the following appendices ( 213 pages with comments on root cause examples) initially.

Book states that it is intended for professionals trained in the SOURCE method of performing root cause investigations (Seeking Out the Underlying Root Causes of Events - based on methodology developed by Westinghouse Savannah River Corporation in 1991 for Department of Energy).

On the surface the story of "Haganai" is that of a typical Japanese "gakuen comedy" genre, comedy based on everyday school life. The difference is that most characters (including one teacher) are "misfits" at high school St. Chronica Academy, who are not very good at making friends.

The comic begins with the "yaminabe" ("nabe in the dark") episode, a prologue in which the club members and advisor are introduced. If you find it confusing, skip it and go directly to the first episode. The protagonist is a male transfer student Kodaka, who overhears his classmate Yozora, a girl always looking grumpy, talking to her "air friend." Then Yozora forms "Neighbors Club" so that she can recruit those who are inept at making friends, and the first one to join, albeit reluctantly, is Kodaka himself, who is often mistaken for a delinquent.

The comic's premise reminds us of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and "Toradora!" and like these popular series (both started as hit light novels) the strength of "Haganai" lies in the two strong-minded heroines, Yozora Mikazuki and Sena Kashiwazaki. The club's activities (like playing a dating sim game) often results in hilarious and unpredictable consequences.

Seven Sea Entertainment's comic "Haganai," illustrated by Itachi, is based on the on-going light novel series by Yomi Hirasaka. "Haganai" (four-syllable abbreviation frequently used in Japanese anime/manga) stands for "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" ("I Don't Have Many Friends"), which is the original title of the hit novel/anime/manga. Illustrator Itachi has a unique drawing style that may divide opinions, as unlike the anime version, the characters of the comic "Haganai" are drawn in an exaggerated way, giving an emphasis on their facial expressions.

I for one liked the manga version for the interesting characters and solid storytelling thanks to the simple and effective panel layout. This is a very entertaining read with a few clever offbeat jokes.

Off to a good start

I've not seen the anime or read the light novel of this series, so I went into the manga blind. I found the plot description above amusing and saw potential for this as a series. I was not disappointed. The plot follows a group of students who, well the title "I don't have many friends" seems a bit misleading as they don't seem to have any friends. One of them gets the idea to start a new club, "The Neighbor's Club," to find people who are as desperate for friends as they are.

The first volume does a good job of introducing a few of the cast members (and shows us a bit of a preview of who will join later). It sets up the personalities well and does a good job of showing not only how desperate these people are for friends, but also why they would have trouble making friends. It should be noted that someone going into this series looking for a lighthearted manga with cute characters making friends will probably be disappointed. Some of the characters are rather unpleasant. I do not say this to insult the series, in fact I applaud it for this choice, these are rather damaged people looking for friends, but lack the social skills to keep one.

For a first volume, we mostly just get our standard character introduction chapters (which are handled rather well) and there are two chapters involving video games as a way of socializing. My favorite was chapter four in which they play a dating sim game in order to developed social skills. The choices they make in game were utterly hilarious, and I refuse to spoil it here.

In terms of the look, the art style is a little rough at times, but good. The style follows many more recent anime in trying to give characters more realistic features, which not only gives it both a sense of reality and also makes some of the jokes work better when it does exaggerate.

In closing; it's an interesting start and I look forward to seeing the direction this series takes. Often very funny if you know what you're getting into beforehand. I give it a solid recommendation and will be adding it to my list of series to collect.

Had quite a few laugh out louds with this.

I bought this book out of whim with a gift card I received for Christmas, and when I got it, I immediately started reading it. It gets a bit wordy at times, but it takes me back to some of the things I used to do in highschool with my friends. There were a few times I laughed out loud while reading. I'd say that it is definitely worth picking up, and I certainly plan on picking up the second book.

Also, Nabe in the Dark sounds quite fun.

About the Author

Roberto de Franchis is Head of the Gastroenterology Unit at the L. Sacco University Hospital, Milan, Italy and Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) at the University of Milan. He is a member of several specialist societies and an elected Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. de Franchis has published widely in the fields of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the major medical and hepatology journals. Every five years since 1990 he has organized the International Consensus Workshop on Definitions, Methodology, and Therapeutic Strategies in Portal Hypertension in Baveno, Italy. In 2010 he was organizer and co-chairman of the European School of Hepatology (EASL) in Barcelona, Spain.

An Excellent Overview of Spectroscopy for Undergrads & Grads

Harris and Bertolucci have written an excellent overview of general spectroscopy theory, appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students. As a chemist, I found it very helpful as I took introductory quantum mechanics in graduate school and later used it as a practical guide to interpreting and understanding infrared spectra as a graduate student.
For the price, this is one of the best bargains available to students. Consider other Dover publications for great prices as well.

This is the best book for those who dont have or dont remember any quantum mechanics background. The language is very simple to understand for non english speakers. A good book with low price for personal liabrary.

An interesting little cookie of a book...

This is probably one of the most useful books that deals with the subject of Molecular symmetry and how it applies to the derivation of IR Spectra, Molecular Orbital Theory, and UV VIS spec. Some parts can be sparse (Term symbol section is a little confusing at first go) so it pays to have a good Quant. book next to you... Lots of problems that are all solved. Excellent reference for some basic QM problems as well... Perhaps the best thing about this book is the fact that it is not (expensive).... So if you have the dosh, then go for it and finally figure out Group Theory and how it relates to IR and everything else...

In a captivating account of sport diving, Chowdhury chronicles the tragedy of Chris and Chrissy Rouse, an energetic father-son dive team who met with disaster while attempting to explore a German U-boat 230 feet deep in the waters off New York. Conway reads with a raspy voice and dark intonation, and he revels in bringing alive the book's dramatic moments, such as when Chrissy slithers through cold, murky waters inside the submarine's cramped hull. Though highly competent in perilous underwater cave diving, the Rouses lacked experience on the open sea, leaving them unprepared for a cruel convergence of deadly circumstances. Aside from telling the Rouses' story, Chowdhury does an excellent jobAreinforced by Conway's audio skillsAof introducing listeners to the history, equipment and dangers of diving at extreme depth. The streamlined audio abridgment omits some of this information, along with a handful of alluring anecdotes, but it also does away with some of the obsessive personal details of the Rouses that occasionally bogged down Chowdhury's narrative. Though this makes for a few clumsy moments (the tape mentions, for instance, how Chrissy had once saved his father's life, yet the story of the machine-shop explosion to which it refers has been edited out), its overall effect is to create a crisp storyline that listeners will appreciate. Extreme sports, such as climbing Mount Everest, are becoming increasingly popular in this country. Among these activities is extreme scuba diving deep diving, wreck diving, and cave diving, often using nonair gas mixtures. Chowdury chronicles the world of these divers, using his own story and that of a father-and-son dive team that died following a penetration-wreck dive at 230 feet using air. Excellently written and a real "grabber" to read, the book includes much information about the history, equipment, and people who make up the world of extreme or "technical" diving. This book should be read by any diver thinking of getting involved in wreck, cave, deep, or mixed-gas diving. One hopes it will change their minds, for there's absolutely no margin for error in these risky ventures. There is also much meat here for those interested in the psychology of extreme sports. Extremely well-written story, but the 'tragedy' doesn't play

I am a technical diver with some wreck experience, although I do not possess the advanced training (Full Cave, Deep Air, etc.) of either the author or the father-and-son team who perished, the Rousses. I found Bernie Chowdhury's "The Last Dive" to be an exciting, well-told account of a very unfortunate accident, but I must respectfully say that the two divers featured in the title did not earn my sympathy.

Eye-opening, life-saving, most enjoyable read.

For the purpose of this review, I thought it's important to give some of my background. I'm a 24-year-old medical student and I'm a practising Muslim, having learned Islamic studies ever since I was little up till I was 19, so I have extensive knowledge about it. I have always been inquisitive and questioning by nature, and I brought these into the realm of my Islamic studies to further understand Islam, much to the discomfort of other students ("common Muslims" are discouraged from having "obviously questioning" discussions as they are deemed to have inadequate scholarly knowledge). After years of study (including comparing other faiths), even though I was brought up as a Muslim, I believed in Islam on my own accord. I realised my same-sex attraction ever since I was about 9, but I thought I was attracted to females as well, so I concluded I was a bisexual some years later. I have been taught that homosexuality has no place in Islam, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought I could always settle with a girl. Late 2009, after further reflection and exploration, I concluded that I was actually gay, not having any sexual attraction toward females. This epiphany brought intense internal conflict - a battle between my religion and my sexuality. I desperately searched for answers.

Scott Kugle is the first Muslim to publish widely on the issue of homosexuality and transgender identity in Islam. Like some gay Muslim advocates, I expected a very emotionally-driven writing to defend queers when I bought this book. Instead, I was delightfully surprised by his neutral-sounding, critical and objective writing, reflecting years of careful research and synthesis of valid ideas. This book is divided into systematic sections, bringing readers into natural progression across his arguments. His introductory chapter is a wonderful summary of his whole book, telling readers what to expect in this book. He begins soon with discussion into the nature of human sexuality (including inherent nature of homosexuality) as a basis for his argument throughout the rest of the book.

The next chapter is all about the Qur'an's stand on the issue of homosexuality. It's about liberating the Qur'an from shackles of previous traditional/classical (mis)interpretation of this issue, which I had come to accept as an absolute "fact" from my years of study. The arguments are laid out logically and coherently, free from "twisting of the fact" as accused by the majority of Islamic authorities. This chapter changed my view of the scholars' interpretation of the Qur'an as almost infallible. A very eye-opening section of the book.

The following chapter talks about the hadith (Prophet Muhammad's sayings). In desperation to make syaria laws and rulings, jurists have used weak and (highly possibly) false/fabricated hadiths to justify condemnation of homosexuality and punishments for homosexual acts. Throughout my Islamic studies, I have surprisingly discovered many weak or fabricated hadiths that the "common Muslims" have accepted to be truth, so this chapter of the book serves to reinforce my discovery. Another eye-opening chapter if you aren't familiar with the studies of hadiths.

Next comes the chapter on assessing fiqh (Islamic legal reasoning). It focuses on the legal standing of homosexuality and male-male anal intercourse, some female-female relations. This chapter and the next chapter is tightly linked, as the idea to legalise homosexual relationships (in the eyes of God) via marriage (nikah) is explored, which requires critical reassessment of the current (patriarchal) idea of nikah between man and woman. This chapter provides solutions to the "problem" of homosexual relationships, and I commend the author for providing solutions too instead of simply presenting his arguments for homosexuality. The last chapter before the conclusion presents points for transgender individuals, which is also a great read.

Overall, this book is simply a superb buy, and in retrospect, I would have gladly paid even more for the quality of writing that I receive from this book. Who do I recommend it too? Well, of course for LGBTIQ Muslims this book is a must-read. I'd also recommend all Islamic teachers, imams, scholars, and authorities to give this book a read and please do so with an open and neutral mind, as I have forced myself to do (due to my classical/traditional Islamic understanding). For LGBTIQ Muslims, I would also recommend borrowing/buying this book for your Muslim friends and family members who might have trouble understanding our position. I also think that non-Muslims can benefit from this book, to help them understand that Islam is accommodating to queers. Basically, "Homosexuality in Islam" deserves a place in everyone's bookshelf.

It has helped me to reconcile with my religion and sexuality. Scott Kugle has probably saved my life from one of constant internal conflict and depression with his writing. What are you waiting for? Now go buy this book!

An academic must.

These concepts shared in this book are nothing short of brilliant. Without ever having to refute or deny any words of the Qur'an itself, Siraj brings forth a truly educated, thorough, and refreshing alternative perspective to what many educated individuals (Muslim or otherwise) see as rigid and disingenuous interpretation of the faith (ie conservative straight males perspective ONLY). It is these 21st century ideas that can help bridge the divide among Islam in other cultures, should they choose to do so. Siraj talks about people and the purpose of faith and defies the taboo without apology a without undermining the faith.

The naysayers are all the same. The same things they said about Fatima Mernissi and anyone else who challenges the old patriarchal ways about anything.

On a personal note, this book not only changed my entire perspective of Islam (for the better no less), but helped me write one of the best academic research papers I think I have written. It is a must read for anyone interested in this very complex subject.

This is an extremely thorough investigation into this topic. If there is anyone out there that finds themselves conflicted on this issue, this book can be a guiding light (may Allah accept this effort). Also, as may not be clear from the title, this book also discusses transgender issues.

wonderfully satisfying and worthwhile read

Every now and then I read a romance novel that makes me realise the extent to which I've settled, so that I will accept a competently written novel with relatively few flaws and raise it to the status of an exceptional novel. Carla Kelly's "Beau Crusoe" hit this realisation home once again. I'm not saying I won't make this mistake again and again, in the months to come, but for now I'm basking in the satisfaction of having read a romance novel that satisfied on EVERY LEVEL -- a good story, brilliantly fleshed out with characters that were engaging and that made me care and a romance subplot that just had me rooting for the couple from beginning to end.

A beautiful and sweet natured young widow, Susannah Park has spent the last few years of her life living quietly with her young son, Noah, at her parents' home. The trouble is that Susannah had eloped with the man she loved to India, where tragically, her young husband died, leaving Susanna all alone (but for Noah), penniless and with a tarnished reputation. Another sad result of her elopement is her estrangement from her elder sister, Loisa, who holds Susannah responsible for her lack of marriage offers. Susannah's life is far from ideal, but she soldiers on, maintaining a cheerful demeanor and taking comfort and joy from Noah and her godparents, who live in the neighbouring estate. Little does Susannah realise however how much her life is about to change with the arrival of James Trevenen. The first mate of the Orion, which sank six years ago, Trevenen was the only man to survive and lived for 5 years on a deserted island, where, in order to keep his sanity, he spent his time observing the crabs on the island. Now, back in England, Trevenen is about to be presented a medal by the Royal Society for his work. Susannah's godfather, however, has given Trevenen a few further tasks -- that of sorting things out in Susannah's eccentric household and marrying Susannah himself. Trevenen has no intention of marrying, but the sweet-natured Susannah is rather making him wish that he was free to marry, and to marry her...

"Beau Crusoe" was a truly unexpected treat -- I really didn't expect to have the good fortune to read a new, well written, romance novel just now (I do not include the Georgette Heyer reprints in this category). And really how could anyone find fault with a good story well told (no oft repeated and tired plot devices or plot motifs), and peopled with well realised characters (in other words, no heroes or heroines who act rashly and temperamentally and just make you tug your hair in frustration)? "Beau Crusoe" was just pure pleasure to read from beginning to end -- there was just so much to enjoy and to find one's attention engaged by. Like the romance subplot between Susannah and Trevenen: I thought that the author did a really good job of developing the relationship between these two, making the romance that blossoms between them believable and so making it for one to root for them to achieve their happily ever after ending. Also well done was how the author resolved things between the two sisters, how she depicted the relationship between Trevenen and Noah. It is not always so easy to portray relationships between adults and children, and I thought that Ms Kelly did a first rate job. Perhaps "Beau Crusoe" may not be the most. I could go on and on, rhapsodizing about this book, instead I'll just end by urging romance readers who are looking for something truly good and worthwhile, that strikes all the right notes and that doesn't possess characters or plot devices that makes you sigh with exasperation, to give "Beau Crusoe" a go. You won't regret it.

Like many other readers, I've been waiting for Carla Kelly's newest full-length novel, Beau Crusoe, since I finished The Wedding Journey in 2002 , already almost five years ago (!). It's been too long.

Scandalous!

Susannah Park had been shunned by Society. She lived content with her calm existence...until Beau Crusoe determinedly cut up her peace! The beautiful widow wanted to help him heal the wounds of the past - but what secrets was this glorious man hiding?

From this back cover blurb, I was expecting a little lighter Kelly reading experience than what I got. Yes, the blurb says, "Shipwrecked!" but it also says, "triumphant return." And while triumphant return is technically accurate, as James is being awarded a prestigious medal for his scientific observations about a certain type of fiddler crab found on his island, James himself is hardly triumphant. More like hanging on to his sanity by his fingertips. He was alone on that island for five years. All alone fighting starvation and memories of a bitter survival process. This guy has BAGGAGE.

By contrast, the blurb makes Susannah sound a bit more of a pariah than she actually is. No, she isn't received into society due to her youthful indiscretion of eloping with a man far her social inferior, but she doesn't actually care much about that. She's basically at peace with her life as an artist living with a young son, she only wishes her family - and especially her sister, Loisa - could forgive her. And a little financial security would be nice.

While I can't say I regret reading, or even buying, Beau Crusoe, the book does have a number of problems. Kelly throws James and Susannah together by a piece of family manipulation. Susannah's godfather is to host James in London before the awards ceremony, but he uses his gout as an excuse to place James in Susannah's parents' house instead, effecting an introduction to his goddaughter. From the initial introduction, the two of them are off and running, both of them acknowledging that isn't not quite de rigeur for her to chaperone him around as an unmarried, albeit widowed, woman, but using any opportunity to snuggle each other. One or two indiscretions could be overlooked, but James and Susannah kiss in public and wander the house in the middle of the night. She enters his room and stays there - or invites him to her room - when he's struggling with his midnight demons. All of this is highly irregular, and the servants would have noticed and noted. Susannah's widow status would have only given her so much wiggle room; certainly not this much.

Secondly, Kelly resolves Susannah's conflict with her bitter and prickly sister, Loisa, far too neatly. At the beginning of the novel Loisa is awful, the kind of woman who would torment her young nephew as an outlet for her own unhappiness. She is judgmental, sour, and unkind. But all of her character flaws disappear and forgiveness magically emerges after James gives her a small task to do and points out a few home truths. Loisa then finds her own love, a love that presents quite a few challenges for the future, the reader must note.

Finally, there is the problem of Lady Audley, James's former lover. Kelly draws her as an evil nympho, presumably to shrug the blame off of James for his part in committing adultery. She adds nothing to the book except a rather forced plot climax and (an obligatory?) second love scene. It would have been preferable if James's "love" scenes with her had been behind closed doors: whenever he remembers her or thinks of her, his language turns raunchy and crude.

However, despite the above problems, I still can recommend this book. Kelly's clear narrative voice is fully present in Beau Crusoe as is her talent for wringing emotion out of the reader. James's backstory is throat-wrenchingly awful, a true tragedy, and the reader really feels how he suffered on his island and suffers now. His is a touching portrayal of PTSD complete with irrational fears, panic attacks, and an inability to be normal at times. You rarely see actual mental illness in romance, and James's is quite horrible and authentic.

Susannah is a less robust character, but a good match for James, quiet and soft and warm and completely accepting. You can see how being with her would be healing for him, and he needs desperately to be healed.

Overall, this is an enjoyable book from a talented author, warmer than usual in the sensuality department. Readers who want kisses only sensuality from Carla Kelly might be disappointed, but those of us who just want a good story will not.

No mixed feelings about this much-anticipated addition to a wonderful collection of books!

I am writing this review, not just because this book moved me to do so, but also to respond an earlier review.

I too love Carla Kelly's books...she is an automatic buy and will continue to be one...her books are definitely "keepers" in my library and are well worn from repeated readings. This book is no exception. Although, I do admit to some trepidation when I realized what the "secret" troubling James was. It's easy to discern fairly early in the book what is "haunting" James and I was not sure how this would play in a romance. But, once again, Ms. Kelly takes a subject that's hard to even think about and imbues it with grace and compassion. Her celebration of life and humanity, with all its challenges and triumphs, shortcomings and virtues, darkness and light, is once again seen here in Beau Crusoe. The main characters, James and Susannah, are instantly likable and fun to watch as their relationship develops. They both are quiet, humorous, and self-effacing with a strength they don't seem to recognize until they see it in each other. There is laughter with the tears as they find in themselves the strength they thought was missing. They have each met and mastered seemly insurmountable obstacles, but it is together that they become whole.

The love scenes in Beau Crusoe are more mature than her previous books with a little more description, but are warm, tender, and tasteful. Her books have always taken a healthy position when it comes to the physical side of love...this is just a little "healthier"...and I for one loved it!

Where I disagree with an earlier review of this book is in the handling of the scenes between James and Lady Audley (the adulterous nymphomaniac). I don't see their interactions as trashy or wasted space in this story. In fact, I believe what happened between them is important in understanding James. Ugly it may have been, but it was also reflective of his mental state at the time. Yes, it was ugly, and there should be no sugar-coating of it. The narratives describing it were not lurid or exploitive, but helped to make me feel how shameful and shamed James was by the experience. I have been unfortunate to have read some pretty awful "sex solely for gratification" scenes in books and these were actually very, very mild in comparison.

Well that's my opinion, for what it's worth, on another truly wonderful romance by Carla Kelly. Thank you Ms. Kelly for once again making me laugh, cry, and sigh through to the last page!
