not a good group study

This wasn't the study we thought it was. There was very little discussion that went along with the video. This book wasn't very helpful. Our entire group didn't really feel this was a good study. I guess if u had people who have never been in a small group before it might help some.But most of what is disscussed sshould be a no brainer. This entire study could have been done in a 5 minute talk. Show up, have community with these people, share your life/story, be the church in your community and be committed to the group.

A must for new small groups!

Andy Stanley and his team team put together a great guide for building relationships in Small Groups within your church. We have also completed his Bible study "Five Things God Uses to Grow Your Faith" which was awesome. I highly recommend both studies along with the DVDs. They work very well together. Our group loves his presentation style and his humor.

Enjoyable blend of steapunk romance and historical adventure

I read the first book in this series that combines Steampunk Romance against the Klondike Gold strike and loved it so I was eager to give the second book a go as a result. This was moderately engaging and offered a good adventure, but lacked some of the umph that grabbed me in the first book.

This is the second book in the series, but it was only loosely tied to the first book as far as plot was concerned.

Canadian Mounted Police Constable Paul Benson is serving at Chilkoot Pass into the Klondike gold fields when a man is brought into camp near death. Paul helps keep him alive and then hears the story of how Joseph Starling and his brothers were set upon with one brother killed and the other kidnapped all so the thieves could steal their gold and the special digging machine they used to unearth the gold faster.
Joseph's younger brother was taken and kept alive so that he would run the machine, but Joseph is the only one who knows how. He is frantic to get back and rescue his brother before the thieves figure out that David can't run the machine and kill him.

Paul sympathizes with Joseph's plight, but he can't bend the rules to allow a man without supplies through the pass not only for his own safety in the cold lands beyond, but the other prospectors would riot. Joseph is near desperation, but then Paul's sergeant orders Paul to escort Joseph to Juneau and get him on an airship that will take him to Dawson City where he can find his brother and rescue him.
Along the way, their reluctant alliance becomes something more as they face danger and hardship together. Paul respects Joseph's tenacity and Joseph feels safe with the capable Paul at his side. They form something tentative between them, but don't think it can last when Joseph goes on to Dawson City and Paul goes back to his duty at Chilkoot Pass.

This one had an exciting premise and I love the historical backdrop of the Klondike Gold Rush blended with some steampunk technology. It started out well for me with the danger element of Joseph nearly dying, his brother captive to murderers and thieves in the gold fields, and the time element of being back in time to save the brother. I also liked Paul and Joseph's early antagonism as Paul was trying to keep Joseph safe and follow the law while Joseph was just desperate to return for his brother.
But then it fizzled out a bit for me. It was on the under-developed side as to characters and romance- not absent of development, but there was a need for more. I will even say that for all that Joseph's heart was in the right place, I felt he got bratty a few times and wouldn't see reason.

The romance was quick in actual time since they went from strangers to a little over a week later thinking in terms of a future together. And it felt even quicker because of their antagonism and then also Joseph went from never having been with a woman or man or even thinking about his sexual orientation to suddenly accepting of what he was starting up with Paul. Paul was gentle and careful with Joseph and I liked how these two were when they were together in those scenes in the cave and on the airship together.

Near the end, it got exciting though the denouement did brush over things. I was left with a few questions and I only had a hazy idea about their future. Again, I felt it needed more time instead of just the 'riding off into the sunset' thing.

All that said, I was glad to have read it and would recommend it to those who enjoy mild steampunk elements, slightly spicy romance, and a historical adventure bundled into one book.

Witt is one of my favorite go-to writers for really good, page-turning romance books, and this one did not disappoint

Precious Metals is the second book set in L.A. Witt’s Metals Universe – a series of standalone historical action/adventure romances set in a steampunk version of the Klondike Gold Rush – and follows the story of a young man desperate to return to the frozen Klondike gold fields to save his kidnapped younger brother, the Mountie assigned to help him, and the deep emotional and physical connection the two men develop while on their dangerous quest.

First off, don’t worry if you haven’t read the first book in the Metals Universe, as the two books are complete standalones with no overlapping characters (although I would recommend the first book).

The action/adventure parts of this book were absolutely nail-biting. The journey the two men undergo through the icy landscape is fraught with peril and the two do not get through it unscathed. I love that about this series, that Witt doesn't wrap her characters in bubble wrap, she allows her characters to be hurt and it lends a kind of gritty realness to the story.

I really liked the characters as well. Joseph is young and stubborn, determined to save his younger brother. He’s also technologically smart and handsome to boot. Paul is the older and wiser of the two, and he keeps Joseph going with steely determination and a projection of optimism, even when he doesn't quite believe it himself. The two men start off not really that fond of each other, but their relationship grows quickly in the kind of intense way that can only happen between two people thrown into life or death circumstances (1 part attraction, 1 part compatibility, 2 parts adrenaline and 1 part making every moment count).

Witt is one of my favorite go-to writers for really good, page-turning romance books, and this one did not disappoint. I absolutely recommend Precious Metals – from the first page to the last, I never put this book down.

4.5 stars! Love this M/M Steampunk romance

The setting is 1800's Canada, at the height of the Klondike gold rush. Because this is steampunk, we have mechs (mechanical haulers) and airships, and both play a significant role in the story.

Mountie Constable Paul Benson is a provisions inspector charged with reducing the flow of miners into the Klondike. The gold rush had brought poorly-provisioned hordes to the remote area, and caused famine and death--prompting the inspections. He's a bit rattled when a mech shows up carrying a half-frozen young man. It appears he'd been robbed and left for dead, the compassion of a few miners the only reason he'd been brought to help in time.

Paul transports the senseless man to the medical cabin, and is ordered to assist with his warming--by getting nekkid. Okay, well. Yup, body heat is the best way to warm folks up. It's awkward for Paul, being that he's gay and doesn't want others to find out his thinly veiled secret. Uncovering the man, however, reveals more than his body--he seems to have a mechanical leg!

Joseph doesn't know where he is when he awakens, but he knows he has to leave. Thieves stole his gold, his digging mech and one of his brothers, David, while killing another--Sam. He absolutely cannot leave David behind. Of course, he has no money and no provisions so he can't cross the Canadian border, either.

Recognizing the human impact of denying Joseph border passage, Paul seeks to get him cleared, but is instead ordered to escort Joseph to Juneau, where he MIGHT be able to gain passage to the gold fields via airship transport. The way to Juneau is difficult, but both Paul and Joseph trudge on over ice, mountainous terrain, and rock slides. In their transit, they become very aware of each other. So much so that cuddling for warmth actually become a participatory sport, to their mutual satisfaction, and chagrin.

Airship adventures and gun battles with thieves to be expected. Lifelong ties between thoroughly enjoyable characters to be forged. Daring rescues and hostage situations to be anticipated.

I loved the steampunk elements, and both Paul and Joseph. The world felt fully realized and the connections built are tenuous at first, due to the sensitivity surrounding this historically unnatural attraction, but soon develop into a new reality despite all the obstacles.

Most Americans know her only as the 42-year-old seamstress who refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus. Her quiet act of defiance is often considered the beginning of the modern civil rights movement, but historian Douglas Brinkley reminds us that it was neither the beginning nor the end of Rosa Parks's quest for justice. On that fateful day in 1955 she was already a veteran civil rights activist, married to a charter member of the NAACP's Montgomery chapter, and a devout member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the many black churches whose congregants organized and fought to desegregate the South. Brinkley gives a thorough account of Parks's political life in the South and in Detroit (where she moved in 1957 to escape death threats), capturing her majestic personal dignity. In the second volume to date of the popular Penguin Lives series to be devoted to a woman (remarkably, only four of the projected 26 subjects will be female), historian Brinkley shreds several key myths surrounding Rosa Parks, the African-American woman who became "the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" at the age of 42, when she boldly defied Jim Crow laws by refusing to give up her seat to a white rider on a segregated bus in 1955. The act catalyzed the historic 381-day Montgomery bus boycott and stirred the nation's conscience. Yet Parks has a more complex personality than is suggested by her shy, soft-spoken public persona, Brinkley reveals. Despite a humble, fatherless childhood in rural Alabama, she quickly distinguished herself as a tireless worker with the local NAACP, devoting her energies to area youth groups, recording the problems of victims of hate crimes and participating in the organization's major state conferences. Brinkley (The Unfinished Presidency, etc.) pinpoints the origins of Parks's strength and strong social commitment as he details the legalized segregation that tainted every aspect of Southern life. His short, compelling scenes rivet the reader, although some merely expand on previously disclosed events, such as the wave of jealousy and backbiting among Parks's peers, her resurgence in Detroit politics as an aide to Representative John Conyers and the savage beating and robbery that almost took her life in 1994. On December 1, 1955, the seamstress, who married Raymond Parks and served as secretary to the NAACP chapter in Alabama's capital, refused to give up her city bus seat to a white man and was arrested for violating racial segregation laws. Brinkley's contribution to the "Penguins Lives" series captures the resolve that helped launch and guide the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1995-56 and the crusading protest that followed. An easy-to-read synthesis, this book offers general readers an accessible profile of both Parks and black protest against white supremacy for most of the 20th century. The recently re-issued 1992 autobiography, Rosa Parks: My Story (Penguin Putnam Bks. for Young Readers, 1999) provides a more personal focus on Parks. An Essential American Biography

The most recent in the highly-praised "Penguin Lives" series, Douglas Brinkley's brilliant portrait of Rosa Parks is an example of biography at its best. Brinkley's breathtaking research and literary skill are combined in this book to produce a narrative that not only vividly paints the story of Rosa Parks' life, but that also illuminates the complexities of the Civil Rights Movement of which she was an important part. Beginning with her youth in Tuskegee, Alabama, Brinkley adroitly weaves together the details from Rosa Parks' life which shaped her character and her values. In elegant prose, he depicts the path that led to the legendary day in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to move from her seat on a segregated bus; he then leads the reader through the journey of the Montgomery bus boycott and the half century Ms. Parks has lived since. This slim biography manages to trace the significance of figures from Booker T. Washington, to Martin Luther King, Jr., to Nelson Mandela in Rosa Parks' experience without ever losing focus on Ms. Parks herself. It compellingly shows that Parks' religious faith and her unwavering strength of character are essential keys to understanding her life and worldview. Brinkley's "Rosa Parks", however, is not a mere hagiography of an American heroine. For those of us who have not experienced the segregated South of the early 50's, this slim volume paints a vivid picture of what life was like for Rosa Parks. Thorough research gives us a rich picture of the influences of the people and forces in her life. Far from being a tired seamstress, it portrays Mrs. Parks as a bright and inquisitive woman, willing to risk everything for what she believed. Disappointments and disillusionment are also chronicled, but we never lose sight of her essential strength.

About the Author

After reading this collection, I feel like I know the poet. We may not have much in common, but I understand his twists and his deeply felt Southern-(gay)-gothic roots. He takes the reader on a journey that is historical and still very painful and relevant. Stunning, well-done poetry.

Two good stories and one so-so one and one really awful one

I bought this book for the Jo Beverley story, having read all the books in her Malloren series. I'd never heard o the other three authors, but I was willing to give them a try.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by the first story, Jo Beverley's "Forbidden Affection." The premise was interesting enough: young heroine is addicted to Gothic novels, particularly those written by a specific author. Heroine's family comes to London for her older sister's Season and learns that:1 - they have rented the late author's town house, 2 - the author was murdered in the house next door, and 3 - the owner of the house, suspected of the murder, has been abroad for 10 years. The heroine finds a secret passageway connecting the two homes, and the story takes off. I like Beverly's writing style and did like the heroine, but I could not get over the fact that the girl was 16 and the hero was 30. It just seemed bizzare to me. And a bit icky. My grade: C+

"The Pleasure of a Younger Lover" by Vanessa Kelly was a pleasant surprise. Like the first story, there is an age difference between the hero and heroine, but she is 32 and he is 28, so it was a bit more believable. The hero has loved the heroine for years, having grown up in a neighboring estate. But has to overcome her insecurities and self-doubt, plus help her clear her late husband's name, before he can win her. I liked Kelly's writing style, and I found both characters to be very believable and quite likeable. I'd like to read more of her work. My grade: A

"The Naked Prince" by Sally MacKenzie was a surprise. I didn't think I'd like it, since the language and actions didn't seem authentic to the time period (Regency, although it isn't specified). But the story of how the two lead characters end up working together to prevent the hero's friend from a disasterous marriage, added to the very obvious intellectual compatiblity between the hero and heroine made this an enjoyable read. I think MacKenzie stretched the bounds of believabilty by having her prudish spinster stick around for an entire orgy weekend, but I was willing to suspend disbelief. My grade: B

The same cannot be said for the final story in the anthology, "A Summer Love Affair" by Kaitlin O'Riley. This is the classic example of someone writing a 20th Century story set in the 19th Century. Remember, the 1880s were a time where Victorian women were so modest that they covered up the legs of their pianos, for goodness sake. Yet in O'Riley's interpretation of this era, within 24 hours of meeting the hunky, half-dressed British hero during her visit to Spain, the sheltered English ingenue finds herself posing virtually nude with him for a painting. That ridiculous scene, combined with a very stilted writing style, made this story virtually unreadable for me. My grade: D-

About the Author
James Mullaney, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, is an astronomy writer, lecturer and consultant. He has published more than 500 articles and seven books on observing the wonders of the heavens.

Wil Tirion is a full-time uranographer. He is famous for the numerous star charts he has created for astronomy books, atlases and magazines. The minor planet, 4648 Tirion (1931 UE), is named after him.

missing NGC references in charts

I just received this atlas and noticed a glaring problem, at least for me. The charts reference the various objects using the original Herschel designations; you can only find the NGC numbers in the various tables. While the Herschel designations are historically interesting, the NGC designations are really essential in the charts for ease of referencing other lists and texts. The authors are probably trying to keep the charts "cleaner", but an observer really needs to see the NGC designation at a glance. To find them in the tables, you must look up the object by RA and DEC, as the original Herschel designations are not in any specific order. This takes time, especially at the telescope where you would use the atlas.

Comments on the objects, especially the table with the best 200 or so Herschel objects are useful. The charts themselves are similar to many other Tirion maps, clear and easily readable.

Herschel Atlas

Excellent atlas. Exactly what has been needed for anybody that wants to star hop the skies for Herschel objects, since the Herschel designations are listed without having to look up the designations based on NGC numbers. Every other atlas lists NGC numbers, one showing Herschel designations is what was sorely needed and this one fits the bill. In addition there is a complete listing of Herschel objects in the back of the atlas arrainged by RA. The atlas includes John Herschels objects too. On the fainter class 2 and 3 objects a more detailed atlas may be needed but this one will get you in the correct field anyway. I should mention I star hop to objects and will not use GOTO technology to track down any objects. Those that use GOTO will probably need the NGC numbers and this may not be the atlas for you. The atlas itself is wire bound and lays flat on the table. It shows up well using red light flashlights at the telescope. It has constellation stick figures drawn in which may or may not be a blessing. I tend to see the constellations different from most atlases and prefer to draw my own lines in, but your view may differ. Nebula, clusters and galaxies are color coded, M objects are marked. Typical outstanding Tirion quality. 32 charts cover the entire sky. Scale is about 4 degrees per inch. Covers are coated but pages are not so dew may be a problem if you leave it open long at the telescope.

Good Atlas with one quibble

A good Atlas, finely detailed and useful for objects other than the Herschel's. However, it would be more helpful to have the NGC numbers of the objects, and save the traditional numbers for the index. NGC 772 is more useful than H I 112. No quibbles with the merits or accuracy of the Atlas in and of itself.

Guido Beltramini, director of the Centro Internazionale di Studi de Architettura has curated the exhibitions for Carlo Scarpa in Verona and Vicenza. Knowing further on Scarpa's life-work

Overall it's an a-okay edition, that gives a global idea of Carlo Scarpa's scope of work during his career. But if you're looking for extensive material in Scarpa's works you'll be a little disappointed: lacking of drawings (plans/sections, diagrams) that help to understand the projects, and a lack of original sketches from Scarpa himself. Another disappointment is the lack of photographic content for the Olivetti Store/Offices, or a lack of photographs of details from the iconic Brion tomb. With all this said, due its relation affordable price/ good quality print, I advise in favor of purchasing the book to all Scarpa enthusiasts.

Beautiful book on one of the most poetic architects of the 20th century. Scarpa's genius and grace is show with grace and dignity.

Inspirational book on Scarpa's work

A book can't be all things to all people. Some prior reviews criticize this book for one thing or another, but for me it is just what I was looking for. Full of large, beautiful photographs of many of Scarpa's projects, each combined with a quick history and/or walk-through.
If you want more text, get McCarter's book. If you want great photographs, get Beltramini's book, or Taschen's book. Or do as I did and get them all.
