A triumphant contribution to the field of philosophical theology

Holland's work emphasizes the most important flaw in the concept of a timeless God; namely, that it would be impossible for such a God to become flesh and live a temporal human life in the person of Jesus Christ. He provides a broad-stroke overview of the history of the debate about God's relationship to time and shows how the doctrines of divine timelessness espoused by Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, and Calvin are rooted in neo-Platonic conceptions of deity rather than the Biblical text. Next, Holland examines the scriptural and creedal statements about the Incarnation and shows how these are incompatible with a timeless God. Before delving into this argument more deeply, he responds to modern defenders of atemporalism--including Paul Helm, Brian Leftow, and the early work of Richard Swinburne--and lands several devastating arguments. Finally, he presents his threefold case that the Incarnation demonstrates sequence in the divine life: "sequence in the Incarnation event and its permanence; sequence in the life of God the Son incarnate in Jesus Christ; and sequence in the finished work of the Son in the atonement."

Although much of the work is summary, it is a significant contribution to the field of philosophical theology. The argument regarding sequence in the Son's soteriological work is particularly original. As one who is partial to Open Theism, I thought Holland's quick dismissal of Open Theism failed to account for more robust argumentation on the subject. I suspect one who is partial to Reformed Theology might feel the same way about Holland's dismissal of certain arguments for atemporalism in other areas of the book. Holland rigidly sticks to his primary subject matter and refrains from developing a robust account of the nature of time in his work; for example, he speaks of A-theory as if all A-theorists agree about the nature of time. But among A-theorists, there are some who believe only the present exists, those who contend that both past and present exist, and those who believe all three exist. Neither does he allow himself to be sidetracked by criticisms of atemporalism that do not bear direct relation to the Incarnation. These discussions would be interesting to explore in a further volume. Holland quite rightly sticks to his primary thesis: that divine timelessness is incompatible with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Since the Incarnation is a central doctrine to the Christian faith, while divine timelessness is tertiary at best, Holland makes a strong case for rejecting the atemporal view.

So much great information that was never considered before in the view of God and Time. Goes thru the history of the debate with so many of the great philosophers and theologians and then considers how the Incarnation fits into the equation of God stepping into human history in real time that we all experience!

Is God atemporal, utterly immutable and living in a divine timelessness?

Phenomenal book - bring your reading glasses though!

Bally is a legend in Basin Analysis studies. The book is thoughtful organized with great case studies and wonderful illustrations / photos. My only complaint is they reduced the font to a ridiculously small size (too reduce the size of the book and therefore cost?). Very hard to read in that regard but a wonderful refernece book on rifting and basin formation.

The most important numismatic book in the world.

This is the ultimate book on American numismatics, and I use it almost every day. Walter Breen was the most dedicated researcher imaginable. There are hundreds of mistakes in the book, but there are millions of things he got right, so the errors are mostly insignificant. A++

If you collect US coins there is simply no better referrence than this book. It is absolutley full of useful and vital information for the serious collector. Its expensive, but worth every penny.

Great information, very comprehensive. Having a book like this is like having a guide to understand what documentation is needed and the steps to take to make sure that you don't overlook anything. For those with a legitimate disability and a supportive doctor, this book can help eliminate some fear and misunderstanding. I was able to apply and receive benefits without use of an attorney, making sure I had all the correct documentation and following the recommendations in this book.

The intention behind this book was to provide a solid introduction and overview of financial economics and financial institutions. The authors suceed brilliantly in those goals. Most people with limited training in economics and mathematics should be able to understand the book (so, for example, this book would be great for early undergraduates or MBA students who have not been exposed to finance or economics).
I think there is enough information in this book to be of some use to even people who have more advanced training. Why? This book gives a good overview of both the theoretical (deductive proofs) and empirical (econometric) research that has been done on various topics (relatively up to date). The book tries to give a balanced view of the merits or problematics of any particular theory in financial economics.
This book deserves a 5 star rating rather than a 4 star one because for what it was intended to be -- a solid introduction and overview -- it does a superb job. It would be unfair to judge any book by some unintended higher standard when it does a great job at doing what it intended to do. Bottom line: If you need a good introduction to financial economics, this is a good place to start.

Good review of the basics...

As a law student with an econ degree, I was looking for a way to review concepts I had learned in a financial economics course without having to lug around Copeland and Weston. I found this book covered all the concepts I was looking for at a deep enough level and with enough math to keep me satisfied. This book was written for MBA's or advanced undergradute business majors, but to that list I would also include two more groups: (1) those with a background in econ or math that wish to review concepts learned long (or not so long) ago, and (2) anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of financial markets through applying a more rigorous, scientific approch.
This book teaches basic financial principles like the risk-return relationship, the CAPM, efficient market hypothesis, and option pricing. Hopefully this book will help deter some of those hoping to find a "get rich quick" method of investment that systematically "beating the market" is not possible in the long run.

This was a powerful read while managing to be risqué, edgy and totally unique. Have you ever thought of the private lives of people in the sex industry? I haven't but I'm sure wondering now.

I ADORED this book! This was such an fun read! I know fun isn't something you usually say when beating and porn is involved but I really enjoyed this book. I loved that Abigail was a Fluffy Girl who has made an name for herself in a stick figure industry! While her past wasn't fantastic and she didn't have the best self esteem there was something easy to love about reading her. And the fact that Sean loves a girl who isn't a Barbie makes my fluffy mocha heart SOAR!!!

I LOVED See Me! I can't recommend it enough. From the first page, this story gripped me with its strong, yet broken, hero and its feisty, yet scarred, heroine. I fell in love with Sean and Abigail and was rooting for them until the very last, perfect page. Sean was an absolutely delicious hero, delectable to look at, yet with enough imperfections to make him believable and likeable. Abigail has a history, one that should have defeated her, and yet she keeps on fighting. I love that. I also love that she is a "fluffy" girl, and not a supermodel. The hot scenes between them made me want more! In particular, I was quite enticed by a certain strawberry scene...delish! Pauline Allan has done a great job as an author, and I recommend this book highly!

See Me -- Read Me -- Love Me

I'd hosted Pauline Allan on my blog, and had read a few interviews with her, so I knew the book was about a heroine who was running from her past, and who owned a pornography company. Ms Allan's writing on blogs had been so clear and well developed that I hoped the book would be as enjoyable to read. I started it at night. That was a mistake, because I stayed up long past my bedtime, unable to put it down. I finally had to sleep, but I was back at it the next morning with coffee. I didn't stop until I'd finished.

Sean Drennan grew up in foster care, learned to fight to protect himself, and ended up in prison because of it. Yet this brawny fighter had a good heart, and a keen mind. In prison, he obtains a business degree, and when we meet him, he's looking for a job. As an ex-con, he hasn't had much luck, and is living hand-to-mouth. But someone tells him about a job making online movies -- sex flicks. When the story opens, he's sitting in his vehicle, trying to talk himself into going inside and applying for the job. He knows he looks good; the attention of women in the past has shown him that, but the idea of being used turns his stomach. Still, that stomach is empty, and he's desperate. Can he make himself go through with this? The characterization is splendid, with quirks and insights that has you in love with Mr. Drennan before the end of page one. Abigail Carlone is open-minded, eager to help others, and a dear friend to the people who work for her. You can't help but like her. Her ability to talk about sex in a candid fashion, to ask questions about fetishes and fantasies while interviewing the blushing Sean made me grin. I could tell there was a dark side that she was fighting, but couldn't tell what it was. Ms Allan drew out the suspense and let us find out about Abs in bits and pieces, giving us a hint here, and a peek there. When the full story finally comes out, everything fits. The secondary characters were wonderful, and I'd love a chance to read more stories about these folks. Abigail's gay business partner is a treat, and the entire story was fun.

This was an excellent book, full of steamy scenes, a tortured hero, and a heroine whose angst-filled life might have been tragic. But, like her hero, she is a fighter, and refuses to quit. By the time this couple gets their happy ending, you know they deserve it. I highly recommend this book.

A realistic, enticing read

I was hooked from the beginning of See Me and remained enthralled throughout. Abigail, hiding out from an abusive ex husband, owns a porn company. Sean, an ex-con out of luck and money, hires on as one of her performers.

The subject matter is serious -- you have two hurting, angst-ridden, distrustful individuals battered by their pasts struggling to connect, yet the book isn't "heavy" or depressing, but hopeful and seductive as it pulls the reader along from page to page.

I loved the idea of a woman porn entrepreneur and enjoyed the peek inside the day-to-day workings of a porn movie company (I know from interviewing author Pauline Allan on my blog that she did quite a bit of research for this book. It shows!). What is particularly strong about See Me is the character development, and the way Abigail and Sean struggle to overcome their distrust and build a relationship. It feels very real. Readers also may appreciate that Abigail is a Rubanesque heroine and not a Barbie doll.

Score one for the not so skinny girl!

And the fact that Sean loves a girl who isn't a Barbie makes my fluffy mocha heart SOAR!!! Sean was beyond lovable as well which made this such an easy story to get thru. He has a shady past that he admits to and is always up front and doesn't play games. He says it like it is and I LOVE that in a character! Some games in the right context are OK but being upfront makes for such a great read sometimes! The sexual scenes were great and got you hot enough with words. In some situations just Abigail's description of how she saw Sean in some situations was hot enough! I will totally be adding this author to a must read status! Only complaint was that this ended perfectly and I wanted more I know I know... I'm never satisfied!!!!
