Beginners guide

This book planted a few good seeds of thought however these insights are spread out between pages of basic observations and depressing illustrations. The author should get his hands on some better games (or at least a few from this century) and keep writing because FREEPLAY has a hint of wisdom that could be developed into the classic it wants to be if the author familiarized himself with modern trends. Perhaps if the author was building gaming PCs with his kids or something then the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance reference on the back would be appropriate, but in its current state I feel that is not an accurate comparison to make.

From Frogger to Mario, Shapiro observes that video games help us become winners by giving us the practice necessary to tackle any challenge and how our decisions can impact our ability to come to the expected end.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has found solace in video games who need some kind of inspiration. The book aims to guide the reader to "maximum euphoric bliss, " achieved when we get into Flow with the game.But don't be fooled into thinking this is a self-help book, because it's not. It won't tell you how to get to that state of Bliss. Rather, Shapiro offers his observations a sage wisdom, like aather, for us readers to take as we will. The advice of this book is the sort many could stand to hear. Video games are an increasingly central part of our lives, and provide spiritual opportunities that perhaps go unnoticed by the average player.

So embrace your inner gamer, pick up a controller, and become one with your avatar. The path to Bliss is right there on the screen before you.

Unique insight to video game psychology

While I was most interested to read something on a subject that has hardly been touched (at least from the perspective of the general public) I was fairly disappointed about a third of the way through. While it seems like the book starts out with good points at the beginning of each chapter, it quickly descends into philosophical babble that may be best to leave to the philosophers or psychologists. If the goal was to write a book that is nearly unreadable by the book's topic demographic, then one might consider it a success. Additionally, it is painfully obvious that the author is merely a casual gamer who has touched few games during this decade.

Though Turnbull tells readers less about love than new life, it was in falling for a Frenchman that the journalist found herself moving to Paris, for a few months that stretched into years. The cultural relationship is challenging enough, leaving aside the more intimate personal story (though readers do learn enough about Turnbull's now husband to understand her decision to stay), and she writes of finding work, making friends, surviving dinner parties and adapting to the rhythms and pace of life with a Parisian boyfriend with humor and a developing sense of wisdom. Of the struggle to adapt to her new home in the mid-1990s, the author writes, "I've discovered a million details that matter to me-details that define me as non-French" no matter how much she tries to assimilate, while over time she grows to appreciate some perplexing aspects of French culture, as "[e]veryday incidences elevate into moments of clarity simply because they would never, ever happen in your old home," from developing her confrontational side enough to defend herself (in French) from rude remarks to receiving advice from "a terribly chic blonde who advises me to use eye-makeup remover on Maddie's [Turnbull's dog's] leaky eyes." Adult/High School-This account of a 20-plus Australian woman's adventures as she tried to adjust to Parisian ways is both insightful and funny. Having taken a year off from her job with a TV network, Turnbull moved to Paris to be with her new lover, Frederic. She found that the French weren't interested in making new friends; were unwilling to discuss their jobs, hobbies, or much of anything except the food they were eating, planning to eat, or had eaten; and they wished to socialize in mixed groups-no girls' night out for them. But Frederic, with patience and aplomb, helped her overcome these obstacles, depicted in a series of vignettes that sketch many of the fascinations and foibles of becoming "almost French." She detested visiting Frederic's family in northern France, with its rainy, cold beaches, but finally warmed to his home, and was accepted by them. The couple's marriage was almost an anticlimax after a hilarious birthday celebration for 80 at the old home. This clash of cultures is, ultimately, a love story.

Turnbull, an Australian journalist, made a life-changing decision at age 27, when she took a yearlong leave of absence to travel the world. While in Bulgaria, she met a Frenchman, whom she arranged to visit later in Paris. The visit went well (despite her doubts in the intervening months about the wisdom of her decision and her alarm at finding adult comic books upon arriving at his apartment)--so well that she moved in soon after and has been living in France ever since, ultimately marrying the man who on their first meeting described himself as "maniac." (She later understood that he meant "neat freak.") Turnbull's account of navigating another culture, learning a new language, and reinventing her professional self is a delight to read, filled with observational humor. We know she's truly integrated when she gets a small terrier (that she then spends obscene amounts of money taking to a chic dog-grooming salon) and is able to flip insults back in French to a rude customer in a patisserie. An absolutely spot on description of life in Paris as an expat.

I'm actually re-reading this book in Paris right now. A friend loaned me her copy when I went to France a few years ago.
If you'd like some insight into the French psyche then this book has it.
Sarah tells of her real life experience of meeting a Frenchman while working in Bucharest (she is Australian). Within a very short time she moves in with Frederique and is still there seven years later when she writes this book. She beautifully describes her love/ hate relationship with Paris, one of the world's most beautiful, incredible cities but often one of the most inhospitable.

If you dream of moving to France one day or just want to read about someone who took the leap then this is the book for you. Her experience is difficult yet romantic and beautiful; that's Paris for you!

Love this book

I bought this book (on paper) when it first came out. One of my best friends had lived in Paris for several years and I was fortunate to have been able to visit many times. This book gave me a small glimpse of what she went through being a stranger in a strange land. For some reason this weekend I decided I had to read it again so purchased it for my kindle. And it's still as good a book years later. Sarah is a very good writer and, perhaps, a better story teller. Her experiences are interesting and enlightening. Her sense of humor and her ability to relate the same are exquisite. I feel badly for those French women who wouldn't give her the time of day - she is the sort of person that most women would (underline) want for a friend. As mentioned, I love this book. I wish she would write a sequel as I would love to know how everything has turned out..

great memoir

Sarah Turnbull is a twenty-something journalist from Australia taking some time off to backpack around Europe. She meets Frederic and goes to visit him in Paris and ends up staying.
Sarah has a lot of problems with the language, the politics and each chapter is mainly about various facets of her life in France.

Frederic does not live in Paris proper, so eventually he and Sarah buy an apartment in the city and we learn the intricacies of French real estate. When they decide to have a window put in, they have to do it on the sly to avoid all the red-tape and then pay off any neighbors that complain.

I skimmed most of the politics stuff, but I enjoyed all the food discussions and her foray into fashion journalism.

My favorite chapter was when she and Frederic decide to get a dog, Maddie. The French may be very reserved but not when it comes to their pets. Sarah finds her fellow Parisians become very talkative and interested in Maddie. I love that dogs are welcome in all the cafes, shops, and even the butcher shops. And they have lots of very fancy dog groomers that are not just for the rich but anyone that does not want to be scorned and yelled at for not taking proper care of their dogs.

This was billed as a look at love and life in France but it is much more life than love. Which is fine, no one needs another sappy, romantic memoir. I enjoyed this very much and is a great addiction for any Francophile.

Key figure in the transition from Aristotle to Mathematics - Newton's teacher and friend

Feingold spends a lot of time on the politics of Cambridge. Useful if interested in background. Shows the concern of Barrow and others for the new influence of Decarte on the students. Good quote of Barrow saying that Decarte's science is based on mental construction not drawn from experience. Today Cartesianism still has strong grip on western culture, even though Newton disproved it.

Page 28 quotes Barrow on Decarte, "it sends good to him, not to learn from things, but to impose his own laws on things. First, he collected and set up metaphysical truths which he considered suitable to his theory from notions implanted in his own mind. . . next from these he descended into general principles of nature; and then generally advanced to particulars explicable from principales which, forsooth, he had framed without consulting nature." Pure rationalism. The English took the lead in offering alternatives to Decarte. This formed the basis of the scientific revolution.

Page 54 Feingold explains Barrow's thought, "Barrow's form of rational theology was already in an advanced stage, for it anticipates his subsequent preaching that the foundation of religion lies on ground as solid and rational as mathematics." Mathematics is the religion still accepted today. These men understood it is an act of faith to trust mathematics. They meditated on the foundations of thought. Not understood in today's culture. A carefully reasoned faith in mathematics has become a blind, unreasonable superstition. Used in ways that these men would never approve.

He then quotes a prayer Barrow puy on his manuscript of Apollonius:
"how great it geometrician art thou, O Lord! For a while this science has no bounds, while there is forever room for the discovery of new theorems , even by human faculties. . . Whence it is that in so many men are almost so many minds. But in these geometrical theorems all man are agreed."

Math was taking a leading place in the search for eternal truth that could bring peace to society.

Barrow traveled to Turkey and spent some months there. Studied Islam. Later commented; "a mass of absurd opinions, odd stories, and uncouth ceremonies, compounded chiefly of the doings of Christian heresies, together with some ingredients of Judaism and paganism, confusedly jumbled or unskillfully tempered together." This is a man who read the Bible in Hebrew and Greek. He could compare Islam and Christianity with insight.

In his 40's left Cambridge to preach. Grew to the opinion that Christianity is the basis for future hope, not mathematics. Friends worked to assign him to important position due to his learning and piety. Known as the foremost preacher in England. He became the Chaplin to Charles II. He was called 'the exhaustive preacher' by Charles because when he was done explaining a theme, there was nothing left to say.

His analysis of Christian doctrine still interesting. Defended free will against the Calvinists and the determinists. Gave a famous sermon on "Evil Speaking". Detailed analysis of gossip, slander, injurious speech and so on using Biblical texts.

Not an easy read. Written for scholars. Lots of detail and copious footnotes. A good reference book.

On a wintry day in December 1890, near a creek named Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, the Seventh Cavalry of the U. S. Army opened fire on an encampment of Sioux Indians led by Big Foot. Coming two weeks after the killing of Sitting Bull, in a tense atmosphere of suspicion and misunderstanding, the careless discharge of one gun set off a massacre that claimed more than 250 lives, including those of many Indian women and children. The tragedy at Wounded Knee, which is generally considered the last episode of the Indian Wars, has often been written about but the existing photographs have received little attention until now.

Eyewitness at Wounded Knee brings together and assesses for the first time some 150 photographs that were made before and immediately after the massacre. Present at the scene were two itinerant photographers, George Trager and Clarence Grant Moreledge, whose work has never before been published. Accompanying commentaries focus on both the Indian and military sides of the story. Richard Jensen's "Another Look at Wounded Knee" dwells on the political and economic quagmire in which the Sioux found themselves after 1877. In "Your Country Is Surrounded," R. Eli Paul discusses the army's role at Wounded Knee. John Carter, in "Making Pictures for a News-Hungry Nation," deals with the photographers and also the reporters and relic hunters who were looking to profit from the misfortune of others. great book in its contents but shoddily made and I detected numerous spelling errors which indicates poor editing. Too bad, because the subject is an important episode in United States history. That a publisher allows a book to be printed with spelling errors is beyond me and to me questions the seriousness of the author and its editors.

I sent this book to a friend who is a history buff and he was delighted. The photos are moving and technically excellent. The subject matter is poignant, sad, infuriating and many other things. Emotional to say the least. But it's a part of history - a part that, I hope, will never be repeated, and will be rectified. This is a powerful book.

This is indeed a 'must-have' for post-graduates studying public policy. Strength of this book derives from the clear structure of the text and ideas which flow from the first to the last chapter. Extremely useful for beginners or even intermediate users. I would strongly recommend this book.
