About the Author
Enrico Martignetti graduated in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in 1993. He has been working as a software developer since 1990 and has been cultivating a strong interest on the Windows architecture since the late nineties, when he decided, quite short-sightedly, to study the kernel of Windows 98. He then moved to the Windows NT family kernel in 2001 and has been trying to make sense of it ever since.

A practical WinDbg tutorial

I was very pleased to find out this book that uses WinDbg as OS reversing tool. Not only you learn a very important aspect of Windows internals related to crash and hang memory dump analysis (all crash processing starts from memory manager) but you also learn many WinDbg commands from practical reversing experiments. I was even more pleased to find the output of WinDbg command on the page 0, before even the table of contents.

Excellent

For this book - I will ignore my usual pet peeve of misspellings and grammar errors. There are plenty of them. But the content more than makes up for it. Kudos to the author for reversing so much knowledge out of Windows by using WinDgb. God knows how long it must have taken him to do that. It is a very thorough and detailed examination of the VMM. I don't think you can find any other book with more detail about this particular subject out there.

In much need of an editor

I picked up this book based on the very positive reviews on Amazon. I'm still reading through it so I will skip content review for now. I'll update the review later.

However, the editing leaves much to be desired. Judging from the sparse publishing information provided in the book it looks like the book was edited and published by the author. This is by no means a bad thing in and of itself, but in this case it shows how hard it can be to make a technical text accessible. The text is littered with errors which makes it hard to follow at times. There are not many books on this subject, so I'm willing to forgive a lot but even if the content turns out to be brilliant the book could have been so much better with the help of a skilled editor. I recommend reading some of the preview text available on Amazon to get an idea of the readability of the text.

The appendix lists numerous publications and blog posts by Mark Russinovich as references. Given the quality of the text I would recommend checking these out before turning to this book.

About the Author

James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology : Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Pretty good book with some interesting stories and perspectives.

I did not read every chapter in the book, but I did go through a lot of them for a class that I took, and it was a good enough book that I did not really mind reading it. I learned about different things, such as the training in the military and the life of a hit man, and also about the terrible situation in Thailand. In that country, there are around 35,000 girls who are enslaved in the sex trade, and there are probably about 500,000 to 1 million total prostitutes there. Sadly, the United Nations and others have well documented the terrible crimes that go on along with this practice (torture, rape, execution), but it seems that very little is being done to stop what is going on there.
I pray God frees those girls who are enslaved in Thailand and elsewhere, and that horrible practices such as this, murder, rape, domestic violence, persecution, racism, and abortion, no longer continue. We should all stand against these terrible crimes.

Standard sociology book. If I could give it a letter grade, it would probably be a D+. If your teacher is making you use this book, sorry but you're probably going to have a low educational value semester in general. - This goes along with the essentials of sociology book.

I'm reading this book for my sociology class. The introduction made me timid at first. They were using an large extensive vocabulary unknown to me. I had to look up a word every other sentence. I just finished the fallowing chapter, and really enjoyed it. I only had to look up a word once every page :)

In The Stooges: Head On author Brett Callwood treats the band's story not just as an early chapter in the career of its famous front man, Iggy Pop, but from the Stooges' beginnings at the end of the 1960s, to its end in the early 1970s, and to its reunion in 2003 through the present.

In compiling this exhaustive account of the band's history, Callwood interviewed all of the central and sometimes Stooges members, including Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton, James Williamson, Mike Watt, Steve Mackay, and Scott Thurston, and largely lets the band tell its own story in numerous long quotes. Callwood details the band's genesis as teenage friends in Ann Arbor, their time living together in their legendary party houses in the 1960s, and the recording of the three original Stooges albums. He examines the addition of James Williamson to the band on Raw Power and how it changed the band's sound and dynamic, along with the band's fateful meeting with David Bowie on its first British tour. As Iggy broke out as a solo artist during the 1970s and 1980s, Callwood charts the Asheton brothers' post-Stooges experiences, with Ron's turns in The New Order, Destroy All Monsters, and Dark Carnival, and Scott Asheton's time with the Farleys and Sonic's Rendezvous Band. He also provides an overview of Iggy's solo career, the seeds of a reunion that were planted with a collaboration on Iggy's Skull Ring album, and the eventual reformation of the band and the recording of their fourth album, The Weirdness, in 2004.

Originally published in the U.K. in 2007, The Stooges: Head On has been revised to expand on the original story and also to consider Ron Asheton's untimely death in 2009 and his musical legacy, the band's fate without Ron, and the Stooges' long-overdue introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Ultimate tribute

First reaction can only be the one predicted by the author in his own book; another one? But, whereas the Iggy biog market peaked with Paul Trynka's final word, Callwood comes as a fan telling the story of all the Stooges and those who sailed in her, also covering the years between mid-1970s spit and early noughties reunion. His fan credentials can't be faulted, even including moving from London to Detroit while writing the book.

Iggy takes something of a back seat as Callwood coaxes interviews out of the late Ron Asheton, his brother Scott and other associates, including an account of the former's time in the often-overlooked Destroy All Monsters. Originally published in 2007, with foreword by Alice Cooper and afterword by Glen Danzig, the story is extended to last year's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction, including Ron Asheton's shock death in January, 2009. The interview with Ron is one of his last and longest, while the rare words from Scott reveal his struggle to play in the Stooges without his brother after Iggy brought in James Williamson. Above anything, this quote-stacked work stands as an ultimate tribute to the quiet titan who `will be missed for as long as people are playing rock `n` roll.' Kris Needs

I really enjoyed this book, a really entertaining romp! It was a fascinating look at an especially unique branch of the Detroit Rock n' Roll family tree, and how that branch extended to Ann Arbor, LA, Australia, the UK and beyond. The pranks and antics where a guilty pleasure, and it was choc full of awesome random details like a surprise apperance of a young Elton John in a gurrilla suit storming the stage at a Stooge show, to hanging with Bowie, to living in apartments with so many roaches that the foodbowl for the cat had to be floated in a moat of water so the bugs wouldn't get it first. Lot of comedy and tragedy - to make it a terrific read.

The Stooges are always interesting, but this book is hardly the final word on the band

When reviewing a Stooges bio, you don’t have to say whether or not the story was interesting. It’s practically impossible to write a boring book about a band that had everything you could ever want to read about: killer music, eccentric personalities, excessive behavior and an extreme intensity they practically invented. The only thing left to discuss is how well the author, in this case Brett Callwood (who also penned an excellent biography of The MC5), captures and conveys the story. On that front, Head On is heavily flawed. While it was noble of Callwood to take the road less traveled and ignore the more sensationalistic aspects of Stooge lore, it also short changes an important side of the band. Let’s be honest here, this was band that loved the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll lifestyle, and to diminish that isn’t true to the spirit of the band. The other fatal flaw here is Head On’s extreme brevity. At just 146 pages, I get the feeling that the author took whatever limited interview time he had with band members and other participants, and made a book out of it, regardless of whether or not it felt complete and fully realized. On the flip side, it’s refreshing to hear the story of the band largely told from the point of view of the under-appreciated Asheton brothers, and not the typical Iggy-centered version of events that you normally get (although I get the feeling that limited access to Iggy played a role in this decision). It’s also really interesting to hear what everyone in the band did after the Stooges 1974 breakup, which is something that you don’t normally get to read about. Even Ron Asheton’s forays into the world of B-movie horror acting are recounted in considerable detail (and they better be, considering the book is about The Stooges and they’re broken up by page 66!). While it may not be perfect, there are enough interesting and revelatory moments in Head On to make it recommended for Stooges freaks, if not the casual fan.

In the strange land of two red suns, Allbanu, Kestrel comes to realize that the destruction being wrought in that world is only a foretaste of what will happen in his own land if Uniontown is allowed to gain victory. When he and the sprites return to the lands of the Inner Seas though, Kestrel will find that the threat of Uniontown can be so insidious and well-disguised that he may not recognize it until it has already burrowed into his own heart.

Still lovin it, but hate the cliff hanger

Please, please come out with the next book soon, as in tomorrow! I can't believe you stopped the book mid sentence!

Besides his need of someone to go through his books at least one more time to get rid of the few grammar mistakes and his need to press CTRL (or command if your a mac user) F and type in the word Alec in all of The Inner Seas Kingdoms Series and have it replaced with Kestrel, the book is fantastic. Not sure if he plans on it being a 10 book series like the Ingenairii series was, but so far he is doing a great job of keeping you the reader entertained and wanting more... oh so much more.. If you have started out on this series and have not read the Ingenairii series, then I wish I could be in your shoes so I could reread it. Don't hesitate, just get it and don't plan on doing anything else until you have finished the series.

Road of Shadows

This is Book 3 of the Inner Seas Kingdoms, and I can't wait for Book 4. The author already has presented some very rich and interesting ideas of how different species can interact through the main character, Kestrel, a half-elf half human. I am hoping that he expands the books to include more encounters of other beings for Kestrel in his on-going adventures. The plot keeps the reader moving through many unexpected types of situations and characters. Highly recommend.

The series is still holding my interest but has now developed to the point that any new reader should start with book one. The series, or any other, is well suited to the kindle as you can review previous books for clarification of characters, names, or locations as our hero leads a busy life.
I am looking forward to the next book on my half elf half human friend. Keep writing Mr Quyle. You are not a secret elf, are you?

Again, I'm hooked! Samir....is coming

Again, Annie Bellet makes me a fan. Her books are bare to the bones action. Another installment in the Jade Crow, twenty sided sorceress, screeches by and once more I'm hanging on for the next. The first books in this series blazed by and led us on a harrowing trip with Jade as she flees the inevitable wrath of the evil sorcerer Samir. We have watched Jade as she fumbles with her awesome and untrained powers, and cringed with her as she was forced to do things that she would, of her own accord, never do. We have grown to know her friends and family. We have watched her fall in love and be loved in return; a thing she had never dared to hope for. The characters that are her friends and family have taken on some substance and the plot begins to unfold in (I believe) where Miss Bellet is going with this serial type story that has me firmly gripped in it's spell. This series is THE BOMB for those that like fast paced action, that is unrelenting and magic crackles and scorches the air!

Miss Bellet, I would truly like to give a more in depth review. Your talent is undeniable. Your writing does indeed deserve more than a few words and a hand full of stars!

Another Jade Crow grabber!

Hunting Season seamlessly continues the story of Jade Crow. I like the zero transition from one installment of the story line to the next while still bringing each one to a satisfying conclusion. There is plenty of magic action. Jade continues to deal with the problems thrown her way by her former teacher as well as the locally generate ones. This is another fast read since you won't be able to put it down. The writing quality continues to be good. I got this in the ebook version and its nice to read a novel that has actually gone through an edit - or at least seems to have.

Excellent series!

This paranormal series with a strong gaming undertone is one of the best I've found in a long time. I look forward to the next book, which I suspect will be the last. If you like RPGs and the whole array of paranormal characters, you will thoroughly enjoy this well-written saga. Thirty years ago I was drafted by my preteen son and his buddies to DM their games, and I still have grown kids into gaming and anime. As a longtime SF fan and middle school teacher, both the old and new references the characters make were fun for me personally and added an element of delight I hadn't expected. Start with the first book, though. This one HAS to be read in order for maximum enjoyment. Roll!
