It's more a lab manual than a book

Disclaimer: I was asked (as a person with 12-years experience in bioinformatics) to review this book for a colleague as a favor. This is the exact commentary I'm giving to her.

First off, do NOT buy this book if you want to self-teach yourself bioinformatics!!
This is a lab manual, not a textbook!

Comments:
1. This is not a textbook, but more of a laboratory manual. While I applaud the individual chapter projects, the explanations as to the bioinformatics being used are very limited, and in some cases, difficult to interpret. Heck, I do this stuff all the time and even I was getting confused. I believe that this book can be used in conjunction with classroom assistance, but not for standalone learning.

2. There are instances where comments are made regarding the "instructor resources". Well, if you are like me and not "an instructor", then you miss out on whatever the instructor has for available information and you are stuck. Additionally, there were errors in the book, but the website appears to have caught none of them.

3. If you have read any book on computing, it's not unrealistic to see "click sequences", such as "click->click->click...", where you click from one page to another to get you to some page. This book does not do any of this. You are given a set of instructions that take you to (what you hope) is the page you are supposed to land on, but because there are absolutely no screenshots in the book at all, in some cases, I was unsure if I was on the page I was supposed to be on.

4. And, when you get to the page you think you should be on, they ask questions. Be prepared to not look in the book for many answers. Again, I expect this in a lab manual with an associated textbook. However, with absolutely no answer key to selected questions (especially in questions asked in the body of the text relating to some sort of search), you have no idea if the answers you come up with are correct or not. Namely, you will associated references (read: the internet or another book or specific bioinformatic software resources).

5. Have some knowledge of molecular biology before you read the book. I'm not sure the target audience, but I found it odd that important information is included at the end of the chapter rather than the beginning. Maybe that's just me.

The projects are good though, but the interpretation of the specific bioinformatics output is totally lame. Why just run something, get output and then just "leave you there to fend for yourself"?? To me, for a book that costs over $150, that's totally unacceptable.

Conclusion: Not a good book overall, though it does have it's moments. If you are interested in bioinformatics and want to learn the web components, use Bioinformatics for Dummies. Unfortunately, as all things bioinfo, it's dated (from 2007) and you need to do a bit of work to get everything working (most stuff does), but the explanations are first class. And, it's 1/5 the price. (PS: There is a 3rd edition coming soon, or so I'm told). Also, bioinfo is still pretty much perl-centric, though you do find python being used more. This book uses pseudocode, which is not the way to learn (you miss out on specific bioinfo packages like bioperl), which is kind of useful to have your hands around.

A Must-Have for any Canadian Rock Music Fan

This book is quite brilliant, Michael Barclay along with Ian A.D Jack and Jason Schneider have put together an amazing book which looks at various Canadian musicians between 1985-1995. I found this book great because it sort of shined light on a lot of amazing bands and individual musicians throughout this era that didn't have a source detailing their history, influence etc.
Being a big fan of Halifax bands as well (sloan, thrush hermit, etc.) I was very happy when i saw that the halifax scene or "underground" was given a very detailed account.
The histories of several bands were given full chapters such as The tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and Sloan. The punk music scene in Western Canada was also given a spotlight. All-in-all any music fan would love this! I definetly do!

The bible on Canadian Rock is reverently written, and interesting through and through, chock full of fascinating information and in depth looks at the finest of the CanRock scene, including the oft-overlooked Sloan. Well worth reading.

No, The Artists Were Not Popular Acts...They Were Underground Musicians

It seems the previous reviewer hasn't even read the book. Or if he has, he's completely misunderstood the premise of it.

Yes, it's true that music from the United States or Britain was more "popular" (and ergo, a bigger part of people's so-called "life changing" experiences). But so much of the music and many of the musicians presented in this book were underground (a claim that even their American or British counterparts would find difficult to make).

And that's actually the beauty of it. As I'm reading this tome, I find myself searching out CD's by the artists (none of whom, or very very few of whom are available via retail stores). It's part of an enjoyable journey: to read about interesting musicians and interesting music, and searching for the very same music via alternative (excuse the pun, lol!) methods, ie: via the Internet. Some of the musicians have moved on to other stages in their lives (some becoming national politicians) and I've even been able to contact them to get a copy of their releases.

So don't buy this book if you have a national chip on your shoulder. If you want to read about popular artists from the 70's/80's/90's, go pick up an unauthorized biography of the Sex Pistols/Duran Duran/Nirvana at your local library. But if you want to delve deeper, into the music that was bubbling just under the surface, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

Some 2000 years ago, the first of the magnificent temples of Ajanta were carved directly into the great volcanic cliffs of the Waghora River in western India. In a series of creative bursts over the centuries, they were decorated with hundreds of subtle and beautiful murals depicting scenes from the lives of Buddha and the Buddhist cosmology. Although most of the other ancient temple murals of India disappeared long ago, those in Ajanta have survived in the dark of the cavelike temples. To further the murals' preservation and enhance the viewer's understanding of how beautiful they are in their original setting as seen by an oil lamp's dim light, the author has photographed the murals for the first time without using strong artificial lighting. Since Buddhist art spread with the wandering monks into Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan, these murals are a fascinating glimpse at the wellspring of a great deal of Asian art. The ancient caves of Ajanta in western India, rediscovered by British soldiers in 1819, are the only known examples of Buddhist carvings and paintings from an epoch of extraordinary vitality. The earliest of the 31 designed caves along the Waghora River date from the second century B.C., when the first Buddhists forbade representation of the Buddha himself, leaving artists free to employ a lexicon of symbolic figures. Six centuries later, the most splendidly realized of the caves were created to express the visions of the Mahayana order. Here the Buddha is lovingly portrayed seated, and the story of his life is depicted in sensuous detail. As adept a commentator as he is a photographer, Behl provides fascinating explanations of the techniques used to carve the animated reliefs and paint the richly detailed murals. He writes, "It is the life of the spirit rather than that of worldly existence which pervades these paintings," and, indeed, their contemplative beauty inspires a joy not unlike a foretaste of the purported ecstasy of enlightenment. Beautifully Photographed

If you are planning a trip to India, you should consider visiting the caves at Ajanta. If you are planning to visit the caves, you should read this book before the trip. You will get a lot more out of the experience of the caves if you know the Jataka stories and understand the Buddhist iconography described in this book.
Even if you have no plans to travel to Ajanta, the boook contains beautiful photograpghs which will make a nice addition to any collection of art books or, for that matter, to any coffee table.

The best photographs of the Ajanta murals

The Ajanta caves can be considered among the wonders of the ancient world, both in terms of their artistic and their spiritual value, and this book captures the beauty and detail of the remarkable murals. If I were to make one criticism, it would be that it emphasizes the murals at the expense of largely neglecting the sculptures, which are magnificent in their own right. The book might better be titled, "Murals of the Ajanta Caves." I ordered it without seeing it first, and I was a little disappointed to see how few photographs were included of the sculptures. Nevertheless, the beautiful and clear photographs of the murals alone are worth the price of the book, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interested in the Ajanta caves, or in ancient Indian or Buddhist art.

If you have never been to the Ajanta Caves...

If you, like me, have never been to the Ajanta Caves and would like to get a feel for the treasures they hold this is the right book to get. The quality of the prints is great - the artistry is beautiful. Very delicate and sensual in most places and quite bewildering in others. At times I wished the captions offered even more insight on the individual scenes but then I remember that this is not what this book is about. It is a delight to simply sit there, browse through this book and imagine what life must have been like in those faraway days. This book takes you places. If you are into ancient India you will not be disappointed.

Well written and a great introduction to rapidly evolving trade

I found this book to be an easy read, good for people new to cartography or an old hand. While it does not go into very technical directions (html, java script, etc) it covers all the basics. I think that had it been more oriented to the >how to< phase it would be out of date and of no use to anyone in just a few years. As it stands this book will be a valued part of my reference library for many, many years.

A neat little book that fills a niche!

I saw a preview copy of this book. It was in printed in black and white, so I can't speak to the production quality. However, the content was really interesting. It reads more like a guidebook or treatise than a textbook, but I think that is a good thing. It was actually kind of fun to read. Basically, this book covers the fundamentals of geographic representation -- but only for Web and mobile devices. You could use this book to learn the core concepts of cartography and skip a print cartography class. It made me think: at what point will we just start teaching the fundamentals of cartography with the Web medium and ditch the print medium for introduction courses? This book makes me think it is possible and perhaps coming soon.

This book is for beginner cartographers. Probably undergraduates or graduate students who have minimal mapping knowledge. I really enjoyed it!

Note: there are no labs in the book and the accompanying Website is very rudimentary at this point, but I assume this is because the book is so new.

NOT for children or animal lovers! SPOILER ALERT!

Having read a few of Twain's books before I decided to pick this one up during a bout of insomnia. 99% of the book is sort of interesting, tells a story in a round about way and makes you care for the young girl and the horse she falls in love with. I'm not sure what Twain's purpose was here, a shock piece, maybe, on the brutality of old style bull fighting where a blindfolded horse was used virtually as a target in a bloodsport. But it was very cruel of the author to make us care about these two only to kill them off savagely in a bullring with the child cradling the head of her dying horse in her arms as the enraged bull charges.
Do NOT read this book to a child, do NOT give this book to a child. In my opinion it should have a warning label! That being said, understand that I'm a 56 year old man and this story haunted me for days.

Evidence of Twain's talent!

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I will admit that the end is not for the faint of heart! But true to Mark Twain's style, the book was vivid and creative. I don't particularly like books that humanize animals, but I think Twain did a fine job of telling the story from a horse's point of view.

Horror story for horse lovers

As a Mark Twain and horse lover, I was naturally intrigued by the title of this short story and greatly enjoyed the story until the last several chapters. The gut and heart wrenching ending for anyone who loves children and/or animals is disturbing to say the least, and I don't mind tragedy with a purpose. This was so bad as to keep me awake for several nights after finishing. DO NOT read this to children!
