About the Author
H. Scott Fogler is the Ame and Catherine Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. He has been research advisor to forty-five Ph.D. students, and has more than two hundred thirty-five refereed publications. He was 2009 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Fogler has chaired ASEE’s Chemical Engineering Division, served as director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and earned the Warren K. Lewis Award from AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education. He has received the Chemical Manufacturers Association’s National Catalyst Award and the 2010 Malcom E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research.

Although this book does provide useful information, it is not especially clearly presented. Example problems are often less than helpful. Three quarters of the way thorugh an example the next line will say Ooops! and explain why the approach used for the problem was incorrect. Overall not a very good book.

As a framework for this commentary, Bryan utilizes the pattern of apostolic preaching presented by Paul and then echoed by each of the four evangelists, namely the formula "Christ died, Christ was buried, Christ has been raised, Christ appeared."

The final section of the book is spent discussing and evaluating various proposals that have been made by those attempting to explain the data in ways that differ from the traditional Christian explanation. Bryan also considers various theological and ethical implications of accepting the claim "Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead." Throughout his study, Bryan exhibits a willingness to face hard questions as well as an appropriate reverence for a faith that for almost two thousand years has enabled millions of people to lead lives of meaning and grace.

About the Author

Christopher Bryan, sometime scholar of Wadham College, Oxford, is C.K. Benedict Professor of New Testament Emeritus at the University of the South. Since his semi-retirement in 2008 he continues to write and teach, and is currently editor of the Sewanee Theological Review, one of only two Anglican quarterly journals of theology currently published in the United States.

Another great book on Jesus Christ's Resurrection!

I just finished reading this new book by Scholar Chrisopher Bryan. Once again another great book I have had the pleasure to read this year. This volume is both a kind of Biblical Commentary and Historical and Theological Essay combined. Professor Bryan covers the New Testament passages that have to do with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Well, specifically Paul's and the Gospel Passages. Then there are a number of great chapters on the historical and literary questions and details,on the historical question of the Resurrection itself. I found this to be the best part of the book and his arguments to be cogent and fair minded. I admit to struggling with the miraculous aspects of scripture. Yet it is that part of the Bible that is the most important in my opinion. It ties in with questions of Meaning, Theodicy and Power. Is there hope for us all? Does God have real Power? I think our culture lives in real denial of Death, and its horrific finality. Much of the life after death ideas that many people hold, are simplistic and not thought through very well. Much of it borders on Gnostic ideas of the evil nature of physical life. That is not The Christian view! This world and reality is seen as good and very important. Much of the Bible teaches that this World is to be RE-Created! Now of course this is just about impossible to conceptualize. The fact that the first people who claimed to be witnesses of these events, went on to suffer and even die for it, gives weight to what they say. In the essays at the end of the book, Professor Bryan brings up some very good arguments for the basic truth of the New Testament witness to the Resurrection of Jesus. He brings up the counter views of scholars such as Crossan, Bultman and others and makes good arguments, countering their skeptical theories. Of course by the very nature of Historical study. Knock down proof is just not possible in most historical investigation. Then there is always the questions of all of our personal biases. Everyone comes to this subject with pre-held biases of a philosophical, Theological and spirtitual nature. As the great German Theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg, has often pointed out. The Resurrection will always be debatable and the final answer will only be when the promised Resurrection of all peoples happens. The purely historical argument is that it is highly probable that Jesus Christ was raised from the Dead, in my opinion. But it takes a faith commitment to go on from there, and to say that "God" Raised Him from the Dead. Some Contemporary Theologians say that that in itself is the definition of who and what God is. God is the Reality that raised Jesus from the dead and promises to do the same for the rest of Humanity in the future. Teasing out all the ramifications of this belief, is what Christian Theology is about. I highly recommend this book. Thanks for taking the time to read my Review.

A very comprehensive survey

This is a scholarly work. It dissects the biblical texts in great details, and explores various exegetical and philological dimensions with great skills. The arguments for the validity of the accounts are standard (cf. The Resurrection of the Son of God (Christian Origins and the Question of God, Vol. 3) and The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach), but the intense milking of the original texts is very rewarding.

The last chapter explores the meaning of it all. If we accept that the resurrection of Jesus is historical fact, then what is its significance? In less than twenty pages (pp 173-189), it makes sense of the whole Easter story. It is nothing gratuitous at all. Once it is pointed out, that it becomes so obvious. Truly inspiring.

Beautiful, insightful and inspiring

There are lots of techniques, beautiful sketches and inspiration. Sketchers who find depicting architecture to be challenging should find this book accessible with all the simple drawing tips.

The book covers five areas, namely composition, the approach, perspective, color and viewpoints. It covers the what, how and where to draw. The text are accompanied by wonderful examples from prominent artists and sketchers, such as from James Richard, Nina Johansson, Shari Blaukopf, Ch'ng Kiah Kiean, Tia Boon Sim, and even the author Simone Ridyard herself, and many more. It's a delight to look at the different styles and beautiful renditions of scenes from around the world.

While there are no step-by-step instructions, the techniques explained are still easy to apply.

The book also has several spotlights on architectural styles, such as the different between columns, history of buildings and cities, roof profiles and other interesting architecture features. Also featured are selected iconic landmarks that are given a two-page spread treatment with contributions of art and text by several artists.

For those who want inspiration and techniques, this is the book to get. Highly recommended. It's a fantastic resource.

A book to help you make buildings come alive in your sketchbook

Filled with many different styles of urban sketching, Archisketcher – Drawing Buildings, Cities and Urban Landscapes has very little to do with drawing like an architect and everything to do with helping you make buildings come alive in your sketchbook. Its goal is not to teach you how to draw but to show a variety of approaches so that you can find and express your own.

The list of contributors reads like a who’s-who of contemporary urban sketching – Shari Blaukopf, Nina Johansson, Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, Suhita Shirodkar and Liz Steel are among the more than 40 artists worldwide – but my guess is that at least half are not architects, which I found inspiring in and of itself. “You don’t need to be an architect to sketch architecture confidently,” says the author in the introduction, and a quick scan of the book would tell you that’s true.

Focusing on composition, color, viewpoint and other aspects of architectural sketching, Archisketcher expands on each aspect by showing multiple examples. Each of the book’s five main sections ends with “Sketching an Icon,” in which sketches by several artists of the same well-known structure (such as Notre Dame or the Brooklyn Bridge) are shown together. I found it fascinating to see how sketchers take on the same subject in such varied ways. In addition, each section highlights two urban sketchers showing their home towns in “My Neighborhood.” Both of these unique selections of sketches are especially inspiring and enjoyable to savor again and again.

One other unique feature of Archisketcher is the author’s particular viewpoint as an architect, which is apparent in brief but illuminating sidebars to many sketches. Ridyard might comment on the historical significance of a Moorish tower appearing in Alvarao Carnicero’s sketch, for example, or how the roofline of a city becomes its signature. As someone who has never studied architecture, even casually, I really appreciate this context and the opportunity to view a sketch the way an architect might.

Other than brief lessons on one-point and two-point perspective, the book contains no how-to instructions or basics found in most urban sketching books (such as suggested art materials or portability tips). For those reasons, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book to a novice. Instead, I’d say its audience is sketchers who have a few years of sketching under their belts and are now looking for ways to step-up their architectural sketching level. Perhaps that group includes sketchers who are comfortable with most subjects, but architecture still intimidates them. I could also see experienced sketchers who are comfortable with architecture nonetheless being inspired by the wide variety of approaches shown that could get them out of a potential sketching rut. There’s something here for almost everyone – and definitely eye candy for all.

Colorful Gem

This is seriously good! The book size and feel are nice. The color is outstanding. The book is laid out very well. Every page is an "ooh ah" gem. There are no filler pages. For a practical workbook, this is more geared towards experienced sketchers. I just got the book, but so far, I have not seen beginner info. I did see use of a viewfinder. Most of the help is "general". "It's helps to have an understanding of architecture". In ways it is like a docent taking you on a museum tour and pointing out why the painting is so noteworthy. It is a WONDERFUL, remarkable book. I just want to make sure beginners realize they may not be able to take this book and run. If you are a beginner readin this, I would suggest you get also Urban Sketcher by Marc Taro Holmes. I actually bought these two together. He has plenty for the beginner. He also has two Craftsy classes right now. I highly recommend them as well as a blog.

The Aquarist's Bible for Livebearers

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful Livebearers, new strains of which are coming into the aquarist trade or in this case arguably the most beautiful freshwater tropical fish species, they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated. There is plenty of literature on Livebearers but none better than this.

Normally the books do not really deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species or group of fish they are indispensable.

Perspectives on Death - Not to Be Missed

Death. It's a topic we go out of our way to avoid. We lead busy lives, so actually, it's easy to avoid a topic that causes such angst. Until. Until you lose someone you dearly loved -- quite possibly the closest person to you in the whole world. It happened to me 5 years ago. It will happen to all of us. There's no escaping it. And suddenly, the topic of death is no longer avoided -- it's center stage in your life. At that point, you want to learn all you can about death and what comes next. "Death in Classical Music" is a unique book. As a fan of classical music, I found all the arcane references to death in some famous (and no so famous) works quite interesting, for example, the appearance of ‘Friend Henry’ in Mahler’s Fourth. I found the essays by the Harvard and Cal State professors on Wagner and Schopenhauer and their views on death to be most illuminating. I didn’t know that Wagner was so obsessed with death and that his operas were, in large part, an outlet for his fixation on it. And there is so much more. There are perspectives on death delivered in ironic, humorous, serious, and poignant text, quotes, and explanations. Expect your own thinking about this difficult subject to be broader after you finish the book. You will be grateful the author tackled the subject of death. Not sure if you're ready to "go there" yet? Get the book anyway. You will be ready at some point. We all are eventually. Simply put, this book allows us to approach a difficult subject in a unique way. Thank you Mr. Sarkett (author).

Great Book

I am passionate about classical and this book caught my eye. It explores how the subject of death is approached in the works of the masters. Definitely full of meticulously researched information and an approach and tone that casts a warmer light on this subject than one might expect. Not a gloomy book. I would say “thoughtful” is the word. There are the great composers here who we all know, like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Verdi, Mozart et al, and discussions of their works, but also a large number of names that I had never or barely heard of (Chadwick, MacDowell, Finzi, Hartmann, Griffes, Alkan, tons more) -- and that made it challenging and interesting on virtually ever page turn. I think that fellow lovers of classical music will appreciate this one as I did, and be surprised how much of classical treats mortality, but I’m thinking also this would make a good read for anyone (who is even a little artistic) who’s mind has been turned to the subject by the loss of someone close, and eventually, that’s pretty much everyone. I think “Death in Classical Music” will resonate with many. In fact, I know it. A friend saw this on my table and asked to read it when I’m done.

We all need to make friends with the unfriendly, coming to terms with our mortality and the author shows us just how many gifted musicians smoothed the way to through concept.

When C.S. Lewis wrote "The Screwtape Letters" he wrote an extraordinary and literary account of Satan and his minions ordinary daily activity: temptation. Thus, temptation is with us all, every day. However, as the Bible and tradition teach us, occasionally, when the Lord allows them for the good of salvation, the Devil and Demons involve themselves in extraordinary activity. This activity includes, but is not limited to, Demonic Possession.

In this important book, which is even better than his first on Ignatius press, Fr. Amorth systematically outlines, defines, and explains this extraordinary demonic activity in an easy to read, yet scholarly way.

After reading this book, I was more convinced than ever that regular prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments (especially The Eucharist and Confession) are incredibly important. However, as other reviewers have noted, this book is not an effective "apology." If you do not believe in Satan, or evil, this book is not likely to convince you. For that I recommend starting with Lewis (Mere Christianity, Screwtape, etc.) and then moving on from there.

This book is highly recommended. For Christian warriors, knowing how the enemy works is a singular advantage.

Father Gabriele Amorth, one of Rome's primary exorcists, wrote this work as a continuation of his first, the best-selling book "An Exorcist Tells His Story." In this present work, he sheds further light upon points discussed in his previous book, while he gives concrete examples from his own experiences--and from other leading exorcists as well--in order to back up his points. "An Exorcist: More Stories," is an excellent, instructive, and helpful guide to understanding and overcoming the presence of evil in the world of today. It is recommend for everyone: it will compel skeptics to consider the possibility of demons looming in the air, and it will equip those who already believe in demons with all the essential knowledge needed to thwart evil.

I'm in the middle of this book, and I just wanted to say that it is a great sequel to AN EXORCIST TELLS HIS STORY. This book further explores demonic activity an the occult. It also provides examples from various case histories. Fr. Amorth spotlights a topic that gets little, if any, exposure in the Church today. If you're curious about what can be done to combat the devil, read this book, and its predecessor.
