I don't understand why people have negative views about this book.

This book had a consistent doze of quality humour and cyrus broacha lets off his own inimitable brand of comedies. I guess just because it is a book - people expect high literary fervour and then comedy too. But even then criticisms of poor language are unfounded as this book is very readable and does not suffer from language problems as college graduates' books tend to, maybe because cyrus never went to college.

I stopped watching Cyrus broacha's antics on tv after two viewings. Hence never planned on buying his books. But a friend recommended very highly. Have to say my tastes have not changed at all in fifteen years. Did not crack even a smile through the entire book. Why did I finish it if I did not like it? Because I am a control freak who likes to finish what I start

A brief introduction to each letter gives some background about the writer and the recipient. Photographs accompany some of the letters. The correspondents include such people as Harry Truman, Jack London, and Sarah Bernhardt. Reading through the letters, readers see vivid examples of how the expression and the language of love have changed over the years. When one considers how e-mail and instant messaging are changing the face of even our most intimate communications, these letters recall a different and sometimes gentler time. Reading some of them will give teens a peek into the private thoughts of people whose names they have seen in books or heard about in class. It might even inspire them to write some letters of their own.

A collector and dealer in letters and autographs, Lowenherz presents 50 of his favorite letters, chosen out of many hundreds. The letters span four centuries, including those from Henry VIII as well as numerous 20th-century figures, such as Harry Truman, Virginia Woolf, James Thurber, and an avid Elvis Presley fan. The letters are reproduced with spelling and grammatical errors intact. Most are by English speakers, and most are from the 20th century. Each letter is prefaced by a brief biographical introduction describing the context in which the letter was written. The letters represent love in its many varieties lover to lover, friend to friend, fan to idolized star and are grouped by type, such as tender, forbidden, passionate, or painful. They all provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of well-known men and women. Recommended for pubic libraries. The Love Letters of Dylan Thomas has greater literary significance and will be useful to students of this Welsh poet. In his letters, Thomas comments on his writing, works by other people, and his feelings about events in his life as they affect his writing. Lynch presents a variety of letters written to the various women Thomas loved, including his first love, the women he developed relationships with during his marriage, and his most enduring and passionate love his wife, Caitlin. Good enough to buy twice

I bought this as a gift for my fiance for Valentine's Day and was really jealous. I kept thinking of other things I maybe could give him because this book was so great. I was perusing my bookshelf looking for something and what do you know? I did own it! I had bought it many years before and it had gotten tucked back into the corner! I knew I liked it!

The 50 Greatest Love Letters

I have read reviews of this book where people complained that the letters featured were not "romantic" enough. If however, you read the preface of the book the author is clear that the letters were chosen for the depth of feeling they convey and not always romantic love. I enjoyed the book very much and keep it as a coffee table book in my home.

This book is a beautiful collection of deep and candid feelings of love and admiration. I hope to one day share this book with my future husband, wherever he may be. This is an inspiring book. An amazing feature is that writers, artists, composers such as Mozart, American Presidents and other famous people we incorporate ideas and generate thoughts about have part of their souls exposed to us in each page. We are all the same in God's eyes and feelings of love have always been. Nothing's new; only repeated and celebrated.

Wonderful Historical Look at the World's First Mixed Martial Art

This is an absolutely wonderful book that provides a wealth of information concerning the historical background of Pankration, while dispelling a lot of myths that surround this ancient Western martial art. The vast majority of the book is spent giving you a lot of historical background and it even gives you a list of Olympic winners at the very end of the book. Although the author does spend a significant portion of the book demonstrating some of the techniques of Pankration, I don't feel that this really adds anything to the book, although it certainly doesn't take anything away from it.

The main focus of the book is on the historical background and that is where its strength lies. The techniques shown are ones that you could see in any number of different martial arts technique oriented books and don't really go into a lot of detail on how to execute the techniques other than the obligatory for sentences. This however shouldn't have any bearing at all on this book as it was nice to see some examples of the the various techniques demonstrated, but in my opinion it wasn't really necessary since the remaining portions of the book were so well done.

So if you are looking to gain some wonderful insight into the latest Pankration technique I think you will be very disappointed. However, if you are looking to "train your brain" and obtain some outstanding and significant historical knowledge on this very important and historically significant Western martial art, then this is definitely the book for you.

I can not recommend this book highly enough and I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed with the information contained within its pages.

Great Book!

Received this magnificient book quickly--can't put it down! As a history enthusiast, martial artist and Marine Corps Infantry Veteran I thoroughly enjoy it. The first part on the history of mixed martial arts and it's foundation in Greek pankration is spot on. The second part on techniques is great and easy to follow. The visually stunning pictures of ancient Greek warriors using pankration in combat thousands of years ago are amazing and proves how this ferocious Hellenic martial art preceded all others by centuries. As a reenactor (www.TheWarriorsofGreece.com) and an avid student of ancient Greek fighting styles (in particular the Spartans) I find Jim's expert knowledge invaluable. His ground breaking self defense style ressurected pankration and set the stage for today's MMA way back in the 1960's and 70's. Its easy to see why the legendary "Father of Modern Pankration" has won so many awards and has been recognized the world over for his fighting skills. Well done Master Arvanitis! I look forward to receiving your other books! Molon Labe.

About the Author
Archpriest Josiah B. Trenham is pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Christian Church in Riverside, California. A former clergyman of the Presbyterian and Reformed Episcopal Churches, in 1993 he was received into the Orthodox Church and ordained to the holy priesthood by Bishop Basil of Wichita and Mid-America. In 2004 he received his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Durham, England, where he studied under the renowned Orthodox Christian professor of Patristics Fr. Andrew Louth. Since 2004, Fr. Josiah has served as Adjunct Professor of History at California Baptist University in Riverside. He participates in yearly academic forums and symposia, conducts numerous parish retreats each year throughout the United States and Canada, and is the founder of Patristic Nectar Publications. He and his presbytera, Catherine, were married in 1988, and from their happy union have been born nine children.

not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be

First of all, the form: even though it is a Ph.D. dissertation, it makes for quite engaging reading, not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be. It is, however, very concise and somewhat dense in places, and the footnotes occasionally occupy more space on the page than the main text. This is not light reading. If that's your cup of tea, you will enjoy this book.

Second, the content: this book is bound to offend anyone with modern views on sexuality. Given how fast and drastically modern values have changed in this area, this can only be a good thing. Some reviewers have denounced it as presenting extreme and unbalanced views, not representative of Orthodox teaching. Certainly it is true that many (most?) Orthodox today would be greatly surprised to find out what the Church has always taught, because it is hardly ever taught now. It is not the author, however, and still less St. John Chrysostom, who are extreme. It is rather our own times and social values which are extreme and unbalanced, having departed quite far from the teaching of the Church, and this book offers a welcome corrective.

Far from being "arrogant" and "dismissive", as one reviewer slanderously asserts, Fr. Josiah engages other scholars thoughtfully and honestly. Nor is it true, as another reviewer wrote, that virginity is valued at the expense of marriage. Rather, St. John Chrysostom taught, and Fr. Josiah repeatedly emphasized, that both marriage and virginity are blessed, but that the latter path is the ideal for those who are able. This is the teaching of St. Paul and of Christ himself, as anyone who has read the New Testament can verify.

a renewed paradigm

This book is Fr. Josiah Trenham's thesis submitted for his degree in philosophy at the University of Durham, England. Saint John Chrysostom gets right down to the nitty-gritty details and shows us he was quite sensitive to the difficulties and joys of marriage.

Although this book is entitled, "Marriage & Virginity according to Saint John Chrysostom", this work also includes an corresponding overview of Tertullian, St. Clement of Alexandria, Origen, St. Methodios of Olympus, St. Athanasios the Great and St. Ephrem the Syrian. Through this patristic synthesis Father Josiah presents us with a coherent Christian view of marriage and consecrated virginity.

I lent this book to a friend of mine that was having difficulties in his marriage. Although he had been through normal pre-marriage counselling he said it was surprising the things he didn't know. My opinion is that it should be included in any pre-marriage counselling; there is a lot here will be surprising and useful whether you are married or not.

Stellar Study on Sexual Issues, Through the Fathers

I suspect this topic/title would strike most -- even Christians, even many Orthodox Christians -- as perhaps dry or dull, but it's the furthest thing from, provided you have even a slight interest in the subject matter. The patristic understanding of these and related issues (sex, contraception, eschatology etc.) would strike the vast majority of modern Christians as peculiar and idiosyncratic, if not crazy, but it's the genuine teaching of the Orthodox Church even to this day. On its face, marriage and virginity seems like a narrow area of study, but from the Orthodox/patristic view, these are the only two authentic modes of Christian life itself, so it's actually an expansive topic. Father Josiah brilliantly examines this through the teachings of St. John Chrysostom, as he is the Church Father whose extant corpus has the most breadth and depth, thereby touching on many topics from many angles, and because his thought is reflective of the patristic period and in concert with other Fathers. A welcome and direly needed antidote to the ever-expanding feminized and/or liberalized Christianity that abounds

About the Author

Dr. Pradip Chanda, has more than 34 years of experience as a power plant professional in various capacities at the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India. Starting his career as a commissioning engineer of 200 MW and 500 MW thermal sets, has given him exposure to the intricacies of behaviour of equipment and subsystems of thermal power plants. Working as a shift-charge engineer in a 1600 MW super thermal power station and heading the efficiency department of a thermal power station for more than nine years has enriched him with knowledge on operation and maintenance practices, different standards of efficiency and testing procedures. The journey carried him through corporate planning of NTPC for 5 years along with a rich 7 years’ experience in the training and development wing of NTPC as a senior faculty member. Currently he is serving as General Manager (HR) at an NTPC power station. Dr Chanda graduated as an Electrical Engineer from the erstwhile Bengal Engineering College. He received his M.Tech and PhD degrees from IIT Delhi. He has published a number of research papers in various journals and conferences. His areas of research interest include mathematical modelling of physical systems, heat transfer and control system.

Suparna Mukhopadhyay, M.Tech, Ph.D, is a mechanical Engineer from NIT Agartala with her graduate degrees from Jadavpur University. She has a unique combination of industrial and research/teaching experience of more than 20 years. Presently, she is serving at the National Thermal Power Corporation as a senior manager. Prior to that she was a visiting scientist in the Engineering Mechanics Unit, JN Centre for Advanced Scientific research, Bangalore and Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in Kalyani Government Engineering College, Kalyani, West Bengal for a combined period of more than 15 years. Dr. Mukhopadhyay has already published a textbook on fluid mechanics and a large number of research publications.

About the Author
Morten B. Pedersen is Senior Lecturer in International and Political Studies at the University of New South Wales/Canberra (the Australian Defence Force Academy). He previously worked as Senior Analyst for the International Crisis Group in Myanmar (2001-06), and has held academic positions at the United Nations University in Tokyo and Australian National University. He has also served as a policy advisor for a number of governments and international organisations, including the UN, the World Bank, the European Commission and the Australian Government. His publications include some 40 titles on Burma/Myanmar, international statecraft and human rights, including Promoting Human Rights in Burma: A Critique of Western Sanctions Policies (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), and (with Anna Magnusson) A Good Office? Twenty Years of UN Mediation in Myanmar (New York: International Peace Institute, 2012). He is currently working on a book on the dynamics and prospects of Myanmar’s democratic transition process. David Kinley holds the Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Sydney, and is an Academic Panel member of Doughty Street Chambers in London. He has worked for nearly 20 years as a consultant and adviser on international and domestic human rights law in Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Thailand, Iraq, Nepal, Laos, China, the Pacific Islands, and Myanmar/Burma. He has worked for a wide range of international organizations, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the World Bank, the Ford Foundation, AusAID, and the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, as well as a number of transnational corporations and NGOs.
