Excellent read on a difficult subject

Alias “Hannah Wingfield” exposes the horrifying life of a young girl and how she was repeatedly abused by a trusted medical professional and how it impacted her life. This is a difficult book to read—it pulls no punches and doesn’t flinch at such a taboo subject of sexual abuse of a child.

Succinctly written, this is a very engaging, yet disturbing tale, beginning with “Hannah’s” early childhood and background, and progressing through her battles with Hyper-metabolism and subsequent treatment and health issues. As it turns out, their Doctor Seckford was able to abuse Hannah right under the mother’s nose, as he had caused her to become somewhat infatuated with him. Her attention was continually on the doctor to the point that she was unaware of the intrusive and inappropriate massage techniques he was using on the child. Worse, he was able to persuade the mother to also use the same techniques. Obviously, the Mum hadn’t done the exactly style of massages that would make Hannah uncomfortable, but unfortunately she was visiting Dr. Seckford on a regular basis. Worse, the Doctor managed to infiltrate the lives of Hannah and her family, becoming such a trusted figure to them all, that they allowed him to begin to spend the weekends at their home, before it culminated into one horrible event.

This is a book that should make any parent think and consider the people in which they place their trust—especially when it is regarding their child. Teachers, coaches, family members—the warning signs are often hidden, but on some level, I feel they are there. Sometimes the parents choose denial over their gut instincts. In the case Hannah, things came out on a positive note, but no child should have to content with this type of behavior from someone they are taught they can trust.

An excellent read for anyone who isn’t afraid of the truth.

Basically story, singular. Not stories.
Very important story: Well told, well survived.

My heart goes out to this victim of truly horrific child abuse. No child, anywhere, should be allowed to be so vulnerable. No child should have to be pawn to the depravity of a true life monster, to a real world boogeyman.

The failure allowing these events was in parental "common" sense. The fact that the abuse was carried out by a doctor was only a small part of the story, that of creation of opportunity.
This could have been the story of any child with a negligent, over trusting, needy single parent. It is a cautionary story for the overly credulous, the willfully blind. The mantle of authority does not excuse abdication of parental responsibility.

I would hope that the survivor of this abuse is aware that regrettably, their parent has as large a burden of guilt for what they suffered, and suffer, as does the perpetrator of the abuse. Children tend to love their parents, even when those parents are failing them entirely. It is instinctual, a survival mechanism. With age comes a broader world view, and for some who choose it, with age comes the opportunity to call to account those who allowed their abuse to take place.

I hope that the grown survivor of this story does not read reviews, but rather has received the support needed to focus their life on living in fullness beyond the pain of their early years.
Society has a responsibility to facilitate as much emotional health as is possible for those subject to events such as those in the book.

There are several people and foundations that are doing their best to support victims (Tori Amos' RAINN, Vitalogy's charities, and many others.) We can support charities that care for the helpless.
We can fight back when abusers seek to intrude on the world via shortened jail terms (example: Jaycee Dugard should never have to change her focus from recovery to 'what will I say in an Elderly Parole Program hearing for Garrido'.)
We can and should offer compassion and assistance to all who have been victimized.

Survival, willingness to break the constraints imposed by their abuser and 'tell', these things are definitely 5 star. I applaud Hannah Windfield, she is amazing, strong, and brave.

The 3 star rating is because I simply can not say "I loved it." I did not. It enraged me.
To be clear, to the survivor herself and to her strength in sharing her experiences, 5 stars, of course. A galaxy of stars, if that were possible.
To the situation, and societies response, it is appalling. I do not rate our response highly.

Once is too often for this kind of abuse, yet statistics tell us that females have a stunningly high rate of abuse. As do males. Society has got to find a way to eradicate this horror, and to support its survivors. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and we need to guide survivors towards the best life possible.
When individual parents are too emotionally ill or too marginalized to provide the barest minimum in safeguarding their young, we need to recognize this fact, and step in to prevent child abuse. This book shows what happens when we do not.

Thank you for sharing your own painful traumatic experience, "Hannah". Your pathetic predator abused his authority in the most vile and sadistic way!
I would like to speak to the precious "little girl" inside each victim of sexual abuse and praise her and soothe her and tell her how proud I am of her brave courage! Oh how my heart aches for all who have been violated in any such manner.

This story was a sweet gay romance that could have been so much more

This story was a sweet gay romance that could have been so much more. There were several key questions not addressed by the author. Why did Dave get community service its hinted at but really never confirmed. After a passionate interlude, Dave asks Joey "what does this mean to us," and Joey tells him they will figure it out and the question never is. The ending is soft and never even tries to figure out where their relationship will go after their work at the camp. Joey's future is firmed up as he is going to college. David's future is left with no indication as to where it will go. As it was, this was just another loving hook up. It is also hinted that the camp could eventually need to be sold. But this also goes nowhere. This book could have been a series. Is it? Otherwise the characters are sweet and their passionate encounters are sexy.

This was a great read. It is the perfect length to read on your lunch break at work.
Kathleen did a wonderful job in writing this book. I absolutely loved it.

Joey is heading to the camp of his youth to help the owner close it up for the winter. He has had some part to do with the camp since attending in his youth. When he arrives he is informed that another young man will be joining him to help close the place up.

Dave is stuck doing community service. He is assigned to go and help close a summer camp up for the winter. He finds the place to be amazing and is drawn to Joey.

Being alone at a summer camo with someone you are attracted to is likely to lead to some steamy time together.

I thought the story was a good one. Joey had stayed at the camp as a child and came back as a counselor and finally to help clean and close up the camp for the season. This year he has a helper, Dave. Joey and Dave find that they have a lot. In common. It was a good short story.

beautifully printed containing all the chief prayers

This is a lovely little book, beautifully printed containing all the chief prayers, meditations, psalms, and creeds of the Catholic Church in the original Latin and English. I took off one star because I was not completely happy with the physical quality of the book. It is small (about 4 inches by six inches and about half an inch thick) and seems rather flimsy for a 20 dollar book. While the cover is glossy and black with shiny gold printing it is basically a paperback with the pages glued, not sewn in. I'm glad to own the book since I am interested in Ecclesiastical Latin but I do think it is somewhat over priced

Tienkuo

I enjoyed the novel immensely--it's a fun and exciting read. The author gets the big things right--the terrible violence and corruption of the Taipings in their late stages, the disgust of many Westerners for Chinese customs, and the unusual determination and stubbornness it took for those Chinese and Westerners alike who stuck with the Taipings, or in the case of Westerners, those who stayed to pursue a career in China. I trust the typos and minor grammatical problems get corrected for the digital edition--it certainly deserves a really clean copy.

An odyssey in old China

Masterfully interweaving history, culture, and characters, TIENKUO takes readers on a fascinating journey through 19th century China. It was a time of imperialism, trade, drug, and feudal wars. We are introduced to a variety of people caught in the vice of history. The adventures and love of an American missionary's son and an alluring woman named Black Jade are the focal points, but along the way we meet soldiers and mercenaries, warlords and rogues, merchants and nobles. And we are escorted through a little-known, exotic, and compelling time and place.
This book can be read by teenagers, young adults or adults for either entertainment or educational purposes. Students and teachers of Asian studies or Asian-American relations can especially benefit from it. History truly is made of the lives of the many small people caught in its great movements. TIENKUO gives us a delicious taste of a little known time and place and makes history come to life.

Delightfully surprised!

I must admit that I have avoided reading books with an Asian theme, merely because there is too much western culture and history that I have not yet caught up with. I picked up "Tienkuo: The Heavenly Kingdom" almost reluctantly. My hesitation lasted one page before I was swept away with the compelling and engaging story. I was captivated with this adventure from beginning to end. To add to my delight, I came away realizing that I had been given insight into an historical event, so not only was I richly entertained, but I was cleverly educated as well. What more could I ask from a book? My only regret is that Li Bo has not written more. I am certain there are more great tales to tell lurking in the guise of dry historical facts.

Fabulous Rock Star Romance!

It’s rare to find a contemporary romance that is equally hilarious, steamy, and touching, but Carol Pavliska’s debut, Color Me Crazy, has got it all. I laughed out loud too many times to count, even though parts of the story are heart-wrenching. It was fascinating to see the life of a rock star done honestly, without romanticizing the negative sides of the music industry. Yet, the music itself that Julian lives and breathes is definitely celebrated. Julian is my favorite character, with his synesthesia deftly woven into the story without being overblown. The characters are so well-developed that I feel like I know them personally—I sure hope to see more of them in the future. This book reminded me a bit of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, only funnier, sexier, and edgier. I loved the story and can’t wait to read more by Ms. Pavliska.

I don't usually read steamy romance novels, but I couldn't put Color Me Crazy down! Cleo and Julian are both well-written, well-developed characters. I was impressed with the author's description and treatment of synesthesia, and that she would even create a character with synesthesia, because there aren't that many of us around. The dialogue is clever, the characters are believable, and the storyline is solid. And the CHEMISTRY! Bravo to Carol Pavliska for an outstanding first novel... Can't wait to read more of her work in the future!

My love for this book runs deep!

Not only is this story a humorous, super-hot romance with amazing characters who have truly believable flaws and outrageous quirks (ones that kept me smiling or laughing throughout), but it's well-written and I.COULD.NOT.PUT.IT.DOWN. I've read this awesome story countless times already and can't seem to get enough of it. I regret nothing.

I don't understand why people have negative views about this book.

This book had a consistent doze of quality humour and cyrus broacha lets off his own inimitable brand of comedies. I guess just because it is a book - people expect high literary fervour and then comedy too. But even then criticisms of poor language are unfounded as this book is very readable and does not suffer from language problems as college graduates' books tend to, maybe because cyrus never went to college.

Have to say my tastes have not changed at all in fifteen years. Did not crack even a smile through the entire book. Why did I finish it if I did not like it? Hence the value of the love letter as an abiding expression of the writer's feelings in all their depth and complexity. A prominent collector and dealer in letters and historical memorabilia, Lowenherz presents letters (or fragments thereof) that collectively express the full range of amorous passion, from blind adoration to angst-ridden vituperation. Included are the romantic outpourings of celebrated writers George Sand, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald whose literary talents make their correspondence a model for any aspiring lover. Perhaps less gifted in their command of language, but certainly no less heartfelt, are selections from such notables as Harry Truman, Abigail Adams, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and an adoring Elvis fan from New Jersey. While reading through too many of these missives in one go might send some readers on an emotional roller coaster, dipping into the collection here and there will be inspiring for those who seek to command the attention of their loved ones. Not surprisingly, some of the most passionate declarations of love herein were uttered by lovers who later proved fickle. But there are some unexpected revelations, too: the ostensibly reserved George Bush, for example, is an effusive epistolary lover. Lowenherz introduces each letter with a quick, helpful biographical note about the author, and the collection as a whole reveals an infinite number of ways to say "I love you." Photos. Adult/High School-A collector and dealer in letters, manuscripts, and signed photographs has gathered together an anthology showing a diverse, unusual, and not always romantic view of love. A brief introduction to each letter gives some background about the writer and the recipient. Photographs accompany some of the letters. The correspondents include such people as Harry Truman, Jack London, and Sarah Bernhardt. Reading through the letters, readers see vivid examples of how the expression and the language of love have changed over the years. When one considers how e-mail and instant messaging are changing the face of even our most intimate communications, these letters recall a different and sometimes gentler time. Reading some of them will give teens a peek into the private thoughts of people whose names they have seen in books or heard about in class. It might even inspire them to write some letters of their own.

A collector and dealer in letters and autographs, Lowenherz presents 50 of his favorite letters, chosen out of many hundreds. The letters span four centuries, including those from Henry VIII as well as numerous 20th-century figures, such as Harry Truman, Virginia Woolf, James Thurber, and an avid Elvis Presley fan. The letters are reproduced with spelling and grammatical errors intact. Most are by English speakers, and most are from the 20th century. Each letter is prefaced by a brief biographical introduction describing the context in which the letter was written. The letters represent love in its many varieties lover to lover, friend to friend, fan to idolized star and are grouped by type, such as tender, forbidden, passionate, or painful. They all provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of well-known men and women. Recommended for pubic libraries. The Love Letters of Dylan Thomas has greater literary significance and will be useful to students of this Welsh poet. In his letters, Thomas comments on his writing, works by other people, and his feelings about events in his life as they affect his writing. Lynch presents a variety of letters written to the various women Thomas loved, including his first love, the women he developed relationships with during his marriage, and his most enduring and passionate love his wife, Caitlin. Brief prefaces sketch Thomas's relationship with the letters' recipients. Thomas's Letters to Vernon Watkins is also available but is more specialized. Good enough to buy twice

I bought this as a gift for my fiance for Valentine's Day and was really jealous. I kept thinking of other things I maybe could give him because this book was so great. I was perusing my bookshelf looking for something and what do you know? I did own it! I had bought it many years before and it had gotten tucked back into the corner! I knew I liked it!

The 50 Greatest Love Letters

I have read reviews of this book where people complained that the letters featured were not "romantic" enough. If however, you read the preface of the book the author is clear that the letters were chosen for the depth of feeling they convey and not always romantic love. I enjoyed the book very much and keep it as a coffee table book in my home.

This book is a beautiful collection of deep and candid feelings of love and admiration. I hope to one day share this book with my future husband, wherever he may be. This is an inspiring book. An amazing feature is that writers, artists, composers such as Mozart, American Presidents and other famous people we incorporate ideas and generate thoughts about have part of their souls exposed to us in each page. We are all the same in God's eyes and feelings of love have always been. Nothing's new; only repeated and celebrated.
